Looking for a Buddhist church and stumbled across LBBC. Opened since the mid 1950s, they are a small but mighty group. Just organized their Obon with great success and it was well attended. I like every aspect of the service: meditation, meaningful and relatable sermons, and very friendly people. There is a website, Facebook and Instagram to see the calendar or events to get involved. read more
I wanted to try something new so I attended a service here. The revered was very helpful when I called.
Its great to explore different things. We born into our religion typically and its awesome when you visit a new congregation and you immediately feel welcomed.
I have heard of Buddhist temples before but never a Buddhist Church. read more

History
Established in 1951.
The Long Beach Buddhist Church (LBBC) began as a dream of Reverend Kosai Osada (1911-1989) in 1951 with the first services being held at the Long Beach Japanese Community Center. In 1957, groundbreaking began for the Church at its present location in Long Beach at 2360 Santa Fe. Ave.
Reverend Osada's aspiration was to return to the original teachings of Buddhism in its purest form and the Church has been following this philosophy ever since.
Our resident minister is Rev. Yukinori Gyokei Yokoyama. Services are conducted in English and Japanese with the monthly Shotsuki (Memorial) Service generally held on the last Sunday of each month (all services begin at 10 a.m.). Please call the church for updated information on regular and special services.
There are several organizations and community groups that conduct classes at the LBBC, including Sumie, Shigin, Kimekomi Doll Making, Karaoke and Qi Gong.
