A really excellent dentist - friendly, clean, punctual & reasonably priced. They fit me in for a last minute appointment with minimal fuss, which made what could have been a horrible tooth situation so much better. Highly recommended. read more

Let me tell you a story. A few years ago, at the age of 26, I made the grave discovery that my…read morewisdom teeth had decided it was time to terrorize my mouth. I pretended it wasn't happening for a good 12 months, until one day I woke up and noticed that my otherwise perfectly straight bottom teeth had been shoved out of alignment as the malicious good for nothing wisdom tooth tried to battle for a place in my mouth. A place that simply was not there. It was time. I scoured the internet for the least sinister sounding dentist. I found Gentle Touch Dental. Not only do I like things that rhyme, but I also like a dentist that is gentle. I have now been attending this practice for almost three years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. My wisdom tooth extraction was exceptionally difficult, for them, not me, I was in the land of happy gas. I had no complications post surgery and I healed up nicely. They are great and I'd highly recommend them for people who are scared of the dentist.

I have to write a review for these guys because I've only had good experiences with them. They were…read morefirst recommended to me by an acquaintance back in about 2006 and I've been going there ever since. My first dentist was Ben and he would always remember what I did for work and where I lived and ask me follow-up questions on each subsequent visit; and when I once broke a molar by biting into some chocolate that was rock-hard from the fridge he fixed it for less than $200 (and my boss at the time - 2010 - had a similar thing happen and was charged over $800 by her dentist). He also fitted me with a veneer around the same time and it still looks authentic all these years later. I think Ben now works exclusively from their Menai practice, which was a sad move for me but my current dentist is also tops; he told me I'll likely need a root canal at some point but added, "Let's not rush there" rather than just snatching the money from my hand. Fine with me!

Avoid this practice! We brought our 6 year old in with likely pneumonia. He was started on…read moreantibiotics and we were told to call back on Wednesday for the swab results. On Wednesday we were told we need an appointment to get the results and the next available appointment was Friday. On Thursday he deteriorated and had to go to hospital by ambulance. It turns out that he had a different strain of pneumonia to the one he was prescribed antibiotics for, and if anyone had checked the results we could have got the right antibiotics in time to avoid a hospital stay. When I complained to the practice they saw no issue with this and did not agree there should be a process in place to review test results of patients whose doctor is not working that day. The doctor we saw was fine but this practice has no regard for patient outcomes.
I went here for a long time, because they are open long hours and they bulk bill. I figured that…read moreeven though you won't get the same doctor each time, at least they maintain your records centrally. Like others I discovered that the wait times can be interminable and the receptionists hostile. They are utterly tired of being asked how long it will be (or any other question), and will generally not answer, even to give you a sense of how many people are before you. You get the sense that they are actually employed to do some other vastly more important job than staffing the reception desk, and are taking your details as a favour and under protest. There is a huge opportunity for this place to improve patient experience by adopting any kind of queuing or ticketing system. They are surrounded by cafes where people could wait, with some signal once there are only two or three patients before them in the queue so they can return in good time to be called. Anyway. Almost all the doctors I saw here were professional and competent, if hurried. Only one ever tried to sell me scam orthotics. But I had a couple of serious misdiagnoses. Once a doctor gave me instructions for a sprained foot that turned out to be the opposite of standard advice, making it progressively worse. A physiotherapist at another practice sorted me out eventually and it only took a week of following the opposite advice to come good. Other doctors here told me that recurring stomach pain was gastro. I would take antibiotics and then later it would recur. Years later after switching doctors I was referred for a colonoscopy and it turned out to be diverticulitis. After dealing with that properly (it took surgery) I'm cured. My advice is: use one of those apps that lets you search for appointments around you and make a booking with a local GP. Lots bulk bill. Keep trying until you find a good one who cares about you and will spend more than 15 minutes on the appointment if necessary, and who is well connected so they know who the good specialists are. Then keep going to them. If you have an emergency outside their hours then the medical centre is still there, and if it's a real emergency you should be heading to the hospital ER anyway. If you can afford it, you can even pick one who doesn't bulk bill - you'll get most of it back on Medicare either on the spot (if they're well organised) or by claiming through the app. My local, bulk-billing independent GP literally saved my life, because I fainted on arrival and he called the ambulance, then rang the ER directly and warned them I was coming and what to expect. I had sepsis - 25% fatality rate in Australia. His quick action saved my life, and a half-hour delay would probably have killed me.

The inner suburb of Summer Hill is located 8 km west of the Sydney central business district…read more Before British settlement, Summer Hill was the home of the Wangal and Cadigal Aboriginal peoples, and the open plains were hoppin' with kangaroos. A smallpox outbreak in 1789 led to the demise of the Aboriginals in this area. The first governor of the British colony, Governor Phillip estimated that half of the local Aboriginal people died from the disease, and also noted that the Aboriginal people "retired from where the diseases appeared" as well. Funny that. By the 1920s, Summer Hill was upper-class and some of the local mansions are still in existence. Kinda neat to still see. After later becoming a working class area, the trendies and hipsters began moving in to cheap housing and renovating the place. Lots of apartment blocks are now here due to its proximity to the city. The Summer Hill railway station was opened in 1879 when the train line came through. A renovation and Easy Access upgrade of the railway station was completed in 2004. Between the two dates nothing much happened. Most of the local shops are clustered close to the station, in typical Australian urban fashion. We had friends who moved here. The McCarthy's, who were Welsh immigrants, no less. They had a Paul McCarthy, but not the one you think. Their dad liked to get drunk and sing Danny Boy.
