    BluePearl Pet Hospital

Even…read morethough its over 65 miles away from home, we had a pet emergency and needed to make the drive on a weekend. We arrived early in the morning hours and were greeted by someone at the door who immediately ushered us in. They remembered who we were and brought us into a room almost immediately. Unfortunately, the day did not go the way we had hoped and we had to make the decision to support our fur baby in transitioning far too soon. But despite this horrible situation, if there is anything that could have been done to make it any easier, they did. The Vet was so incredibly empathetic and supportive, the assistants were so respectful and kind throughout. It was such a difficult day, but made so much less distressing to have people support us in the way they did. I will never hesitate to make the drive and/or recommend BluePearl. They were ALL so wonderful to us on such a hard day.

I waited about a month before I wrote this review. I wanted to make certain that I had my wits, and…read morewords, about me before proceeding. Last month, my husband and I had to make the almost 2-hour journey from Cohasset, MN to Duluth, MN with my 3.5 lb., 13 year old Chorkie, Dixxy as she was very ill and needed help DESPERATELY. Our vet couldn't fit her in as they already had to squeeze in three other "urgent" visits. They suggested that we could take her to Blue Pearl or wait until Saturday (the next day) and take her to Bemidji. Well, we were so worried about her that we decided on taking her that night to Blue Pearl. We called ahead of time to tell them we we coming and what was going on. In order for anyone reading this review...this is what she was experiencing: 1) She would not eat and hadn't eaten for 3 days 2) Lethargy had set in the day before we took her 3) She was now GULPING water like a Camel and then throwing it all up within 2 hours later 4) Her eyes had gone from big and bright to TINY and clouded. We got there right around 5:30 pm on a Friday night. We went in and they took her back to evaluate her and decided she could wait. So we did...for 4 HOURS. At this time, I asked for a MedTech to take her back and check he Glucose level because a tiny dog like her can crash without warning. I also stated I was really worried about her hydration levels. She took her into the back for literally 45 seconds to a minute. Came back out with her and informed me that her Glucose level was 74. She handed her to me and before I could ask her about her hydration, she practically sprinted away from me and was gone! So, we waited 2 more HOURS and finally asked the gal at the front if they will be able to see her because we were looking at not getting home until 2:00 AM as it was and I had a wedding I was to be at (I'm a Photographer) Saturday early afternoon and the wedding was in ND! She then put us into a "waiting room" for another 45 minutes and STILL not seen. We told her we were leaving and how unhappy I was with all this!! We got home and my husband went to bed as he now had put in a 22-hour day. I got Dixxy comfortable in the living room on her little bed on the couch. I was cleaning up the kitchen when I heard her get off the couch. I came around the couch and saw her standing next to one of the dog beds on the floor by the fireplace. Just then, she threw up so violently that it cleared the dog bed (12 inches across and as high on the sides as she is tall) and HIT THE WALL! Needless to say, I was an absolute wreck and I believed I was watching my dog die!! This was now about 5:30 in the morning. I stayed up and called the Bemidji Animal Hospital at 8:00 am and they were able to see her right away. I couldn't go with so I had texted my husband a NOVEL of everything I wanted them to do and at the top of the list was SUBCUTANEOUS FLUIDS. I know from experience that Subcutaneous Fluids take literally 30 seconds to administer and why Blue Pearl did not address that is BEYOND MADDENING! Bemidji was Fantastic! She was soooo dehydrated that not only did she need subcutaneous fluid, but also an IV! They did a scan and an x-ray and they did not show any obstructions. Now here's the BIG Kicker. Her Blood Panel showed 4 abnormalities PLUS her Glucose Level was 41...FORTY ONE! 80 is considered an optimal level. She had lost almost a full pound and weighed 2.7 Lbs! And her eyes were a direct result of EXTREME dehydration!!! SHE WAS IN CRISIS and had we not gotten her care there, we would have lost her. So to RECAP the 1 Star Review...In SIX hours they GLANCED at her 2x and in those 2x they didn't see how dehydrated she was?!? They couldn't take the literally 30 SECONDS to give her subcutaneous fluids to tithe her over until they could give her a thorough exam?? If they had simply done that, it would have prevented the Glucose crash, I KNEW was coming, because she would have ate! It's lazy and just plain horrible veterinary care!

We called around and one of the vets we spoke to recommended this place. The clinic was so helpful and kind on the phone. They squeezed us in for emergency visit despite low staff and very busy schedule because it was Monday with 4th of July the next day. They were thorough and so kind to my dog who is usually a terror at the vet. They listened to my feedback about her usual behavior at the vet and were able to accommodate us (bite risk) without complaints. They were patient and really listened to me even though they knew they wouldn't see her again (cause we are out of town); they treated her and me like lifelong patients. I think they saved her life; after X-ray they started immediate meds and her breathing was so erratic and shallow I'm scared she would not have made it thru the night otherwise. Dr Pop was awesome and all the vet techs and front desk were very helpful. They contacted my local vet to send X-ray results and followup records. Plus the place was clean and comfortable and beautiful. It was dark and cool and calming which made a huge difference for my pet. I would recommend this place to anyone.

The first red flag should have been the credit card machine sitting amongst the garish decorations of the exam room. We were charged before the doctor even came into the room, charged prior to each part of the exam performed, and made to believe that our beloved pet's situation was life or death if he did not have surgery performed. Luckily, the doctor was unable to actually perform said surgery. Even luckier; they neglected to actually set us up with a referral for the surgeon come Monday. I should mention that not only did Dr Pop not handle our pet in the room, she actually flinched away from him when we were trying to get him onto the scale for her and her assistant. Our little guy was perking up by Sunday anyways. On Tuesday, we made the long drive down to our former vet's office for a second opinion. The doctor there did not see any of the issues that Dr Pop claimed our boy was suffering from. She was also appalled that we were charged prior to every service, especially as there is never any guarantee that an animal would even allow something like an X-ray to be done. If you love your pets, steer clear of Waters Edge. They will try to take you for everything you have, and then try to take you for more after scaring you with a bs terminal diagnosis. Today is Wednesday and our pet is eating well, using the bathroom as normal, happy and healthy and it's all no thanks to this awful place. If I could give zero stars, I would.

The day i dropped her off I asked if she would need a cone for after surgery and I was told "no" and that was all. Went to get my kitten the next day and they forgot to microchip her while she was under for surgery. They microchipped her right then and while I was waiting I could hear my kitten SCREAMING while they microchipped her. My regular vet said they only microchip while the cat is out for surgery because it is a large needle and very uncomfortable. As if my kitten wasn't already in pain and scared from surgery but then they did that to her. then they told me the screaming was from trying to get her out of the kennel, she hates her kennel and comes out immediately after the door is open so I found that very hard to believe. Once I got my kitten home I immediately noticed that she was covered in poop and pee. Her kennel was not wet or smelly so they had to have put her in her carrier seeing that she was soaked in her own feces. My kitten also starting licking her incision within a few minutes of being home, so she definitely should have had a cone even though they told me she would not need one when I dropped her off. I had to bring her into my regular vet, within 2 hours of being home, for emergency care where she received an antibiotic shot and a cone!! They also cleaned up her rear a little more because I could not get it all when I was home with her. Northland spay/neuter does offer a free check up for the animals they see but I definitely will not be bringing my kitten back to that place. I would rather pay $60 at my regular vet for her to check up and then I know a good job all be done. Thank you if you've read this far. I know a lot of people are happy with their experience here and maybe I just am an unlucky person but I think that the experience I had was absolutely unacceptable. I hope no one ever has to hear their kitten scream in pain for for something that easily could have been avoided. That could have been pain free if it were not for the carelessness/forgetfulness of the staff.

My problems with NSVH have started recently, with honestly really poor customer service and blatant rudeness from staff. When you have a staff member working the phone, as a business it's your job to make sure they are providing adequate service to the standard your clients pay for. I do not want to be cut off or interrupted, I do not want to be hung up on, I do not want to feel stupid or brushed off during my interactions because the woman working the phone wants to rush through my call. I can overlook rude phone service, but I can not overlook it when it comes to in person care as well. I am a young pet owner and I know it may be hard to take me seriously, but I think over the course of 7 appointments I have met maybe 4 vet techs/vets that have actually treated me like a person. I am a human that is worried for their pet, I may have questions and that's okay, but it is not okay for a business to allow rude or belittling behavior. I pay almost twice as much for the "exceptional" service NSVH claims is their practice, which is beginning to feel not worth it. Seriously, this place could be as great as it once was with a little extra attention to customer service! Also, talk to the morning shift phone staff; it's gotten to a point where they just aren't doing their job, and that's honestly poor management.
