The staff is very friendly and attentive and helped out when needed. Seeing how this is supposed to be a southern style themed USA restaurant, I figured my input would be good here... the restaurant is well decorated and I enjoyed the ambience. Although there was an electric guitar on the wall that seemed out of place, as they could have used a regular guitar, like what would actually be used in a southern US steakhouse, an electric guitar is not what should be used unless signed by somebody famous from the south US. The steak itself, they got my order of medium rare wrong at first and it came out rare. Advice to the cook, feel with the back of your fingers by pressing on the steak while it's on the grill if the steak is medium rare, should only be slightly mushy, not completely mushy as in the way it came out... for a medium rare. Do not feel right after you just flipped the steak, as it will be naturally harder because of the heat. The steak was a T-bone and it wasn't flavored with herbs, but that wasn't a big deal as it had decent flavor. The meat itself was too fatty and had too many fat streaks to be a southern style steak. Suggest using better quality meats, especially for the price as I can tell that it is the bargain steak (suggest finding an Angus dealer and using them, not frozen steaks for this price, kind of insulting). I probably asked, improperly, as my Dutch is not very good, if the vegetables on the side were grilled and they said yes they were, but when they came out, they were steamed, actually over steamed and slightly mushy... BTW again, I shouldn't have to order a side of veggies with my order, it should come with it, again for this price in the US, minus a few dollars, it comes with a side, a few you can choose from. ****Quit overcharging and add sides to the steaks as a standard order, especially when you don't buy the correct expensive steaks! Sides are not a "specialty item" that you can charge more for... Advice to the cook, the vegetables should be crunchy, not slightly mushy. Also to the cook, try grilling the veggies for a more authentic American flavor and add some butter and mild salt to the grilled veggies. The cook will decide if this restaurant in the long run will survive, so the cook needs to study more and I hope my suggestions will help if they ever see them. Cheers, it isn't a bad restaurant, just not as good as the price suggests... Either change things and make sure things are cooked properly or find another living as just a bar.

Fuego Bar & Grill - Steak cooked medium rare with mushrooms and peppercorn sauce

The streets were packed with families and the boats in the harbor were all lit up. The restaurants were all filled to capacity but on our third try we were able to get seated at Fuego. Fuego is beautiful inside and all the tables face giant windows on the marina. You can also dine on the outside terrace. Even in the cold temperatures people were bundled up eating and drinking. From the service, drinks, and the food our experience was wonderful. The Long Islands were strong and packed a punch. We started with a bowl of creamy tomato and smoked paprika soup. It was excellent. Good flavor and consistency. From there we had the seafood trio. Wonderful presentation of cod, gamba (prawns), and salmon. The flavorful burre noisette sauce was excellent. The steak was expertly grilled with a nice medium rare center. We passed on dessert but decided on coffee before heading back into the cold. Our experience at Fuego was great, five stars!

We stopped for lunch at the Fuego Bar & Grill, a classy, upscale pub around the corner from the boardwalk, where vendors peddle classic Dutch kitsch such as wooden shoes, traditional costume photography, postcards and other tourist bait (although the almost-next-door Cheese Factory Volendam and attached museum is absolutely worth the price of admission; you will not walk away with out a few wedges!). While not exactly traditional Dutch cuisine (the menu is similar to an American seafood and steakhouse, with some regional European flair), the steaks here were juicy and cooked to order, and to perfection. Salad was crisp and not drowned in dressing, and fries were thick, steak-cut and golden brown. While you won't get any adventure points for branching out and trying something new and exotic, you will have a hard time finding a better restaurant in Volendam.
