I lived with a torn meniscus for over 20 years. When Dr. Bulthuis recommended meniscus trimming surgery, he said it was "my choice" and that I was a "good candidate" based on my MRI appearing younger than my actual age (mid-50s). These comments should have raised red flags. The problems that arose include: Minimal pre- and post-operative care instructions; When I experienced pain after accidentally bending down on my knee 3 weeks post-op, he blamed me and offered to operate again, without ordering a new MRI; He never discussed how my gait issues (pronation) would affect long-term outcomes; He didn't mention the higher surgical risks for women over 50; He never addressed how this surgery is often over-prescribed; He said my recovery would be 1 week to 1 year, while in reality it's been 15+ months with continuous physical therapy. Because of the surgery I can no longer ski, the main reason I agreed to surgery. I'm now learning to live with numerous permanent limitations I didn't have before. I don't know if the issues with Bulthuis were motivated by financial incentives, poor judgment on his part, or lack of communication, but I do know I wasn't treated with appropriate care or given complete information to make an informed decision. Please get a second opinion before any elective orthopedic surgery with Bulthuis.
