Can't say enough about my wonderful stay at this 400 year old castle. It exceeded my expectations…read more The castle is absolutely magnificent. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. They have spared no expense in joining modern comforts wth historic charm. Love the several hidden stairways the hosts will show you. They start the fireplace every evening. Wonderful atmosphere to sip in a whisky and relax. The city of Oban just 15 minutes away is the most charming and all around best village I visited while in Scotland. Add Oban and the Barcaldine Castle to your. "Must do" list for Scotland.

Abide and Daniel picked us up and dropped us off from the bus stop that's just a bit too far to walk from in a reasonable amount of time. They were so warm and welcoming, they are really great people. They accommodated us so nicely on their last night of being open for the year before the castle's yearly break in service. We felt like we had the whole castle to ourselves - we practically did! Just sitting by the fire in the main dining hall and sipping a dram was dreamy. Look up the history of this castle if you intend on going - it's fascinating! Breakfast wa superb and the best 'full scottish' we got on our trip. Thank you Abbie and Daniel!

A lovely place Be…read moreaware: Marker on map is way off (at the time I wrote this at least - Park is at the Balloch Castle in Balloch) We walked around Balloch for a while until we started walking along the Loch. It's a nice, pretty short trail leading along the Loch or through the woods. Shortly after you'll find yourself on a huge lawn in front of the Balloch Castle. There are several trails around this area to choose from. The big lawn is really a paradise for humans and pets as well. Even though it was a lovely summer day it never felt crowded and everybody had enough space to do whatever they liked. A good place to let your doggy run free. It offers lots of nice picnic spots with nice views. The Castle itself was partly under construction at the time. The lakeside right at Balloch feels more crowded, be sure to walk just a wee bit further to this park for more space and more views.

It's about a 10min walk from the train station and there's a Keystore little shop which I am guessing would be good for grabbing snack and beverage provisions. We also have GPS on two phone so not worried about getting lost...

Dumbarton Castle is the oldest fortified stronghold in Scotland, if not Britain. It is known to…read morehave been inhabited in the Iron Age, and was an important outpost in Roman times guarding the western approaches to the Antonine Wall. Written records mentioning "Alt Clut" (Rock of Clyde) date back to the 5th Century, and it's seen a lot of action since then. The Gaelic name "Dun Breatainn" means 'Fort of the Britons', a sign of the place's importance in the Dark Ages when the Kingdom of the Britons extended from the top end of Loch Lomond all the way down the west side of the country to north Wales and was ruled from here (did someone mention Arthur?). Merlin, in his Scottish wild-man form of Lailoken, is said to have visited here, and the list of illustrious guests throughout history includes Mary Queen of Scots, who sought refuge here as a child before sailing to France to marry the young Dauphin. William Wallace was also held captive here before being taken to London to meet his grisly execution. The Castle was still manned as a military base in World War 2. But all this history is barely evident today, and a visit to the castle should be enjoyed mainly for the exercise in climbing the 547 steps to the highest point, and the stunning views of the Clyde, and Ben Lomond to the north. There isn't much else to see to be honest - the guardroom has a small exhibition on the castle's history, there is the magazine on the lower of the two summits, and the 'French prison' where captured Napoleonic soldiers were held - but this was closed for refurbishment on my visit. But other than that, it's a lot of steps and a good workout! There is a very small gift shop but the selection of the usual tat was hardly inspiring. Go for the views and the exercise.
