This is the big newish DSW shoes at Mall of Louisiana...or I guess I should say adjacent to it. It's a big store but it seems like it doesn't carry a huge variety of styles. Right now, it's lots and lots and lots of variations on flip flops. The clearance section is all the way in the back and is well organized, but a bit dark. The men's section is a fourth the size of the women's and on the left hand side of the store. Children's shoes are not carried.

Thank you Ashley Edwards! You are a STAR employee!!!! DSW hit the jackpot with you as a manager!

I've been looking for a roof rack loader for my Pescador Perception so, since Thule and Yakima accessories are pretty much interchangeable, I Google search Thule and Yakima dealers in the area. Two popped up and The Backpacker was one of them. It's a dreary rainy day and lunch time. I managed to find the shop in spite of the lunch traffic on Jefferson Hwy. I parked and walked inside. I was immediately received with a friendly greeting by several of the staff with offers to help me. I told them I was "just looking around" and they left me to myself with me knowing if I needed any help they'd be there. I like that. I wandered around for about 30 minutes and I managed to find a few things. Some I needed and some I didn't know I needed. So, I carried my bounty to the register and was checking out. I asked the young man if they had a THule or Yakima kayak loader. He replied, " We don't have any T-hule loaders or Yakima loaders in stock." I always find it amusing when the folks in the outfitting shops do that. I'm not "Sveedish" so I'll continue to say "THule" LOL. In all seriousness, the shop is very comfortable and friendly. The staff are extremely helpful and not overbearing/pushy. I travel to BR often on business and I'll continue to stop by "The Backpacker" to find things I didn't know I needed. I'm convinced that if they don't have it, you don't really need it. Kristen (sorry if I spelled it wrong) helped me. She was very friendly, easy going and helpful. It was a very quick process to exchange my shoes, no hassle at all. I was very excited with my first pair of Hoka and was looking forward to comfortable walking. Unfortunately I finally wore them last weekend on a trip that had lots of walking. After the second day, I couldn't walk in them anymore. My feet are too wide and I had such pain in the area where my feet were hanging over the soles. I wasn't sure of the return policy about worn shoes but went back to ask about exchanging once again. I happened to run into Kristen again and asked her if she remembered helping me last time. She initially didn't until I told her the Mother's Day gift and the color. She instantly recalled our encounter. After explaining to her about the shoes and asked if I could exchange them, she said "yes!" I was so relieved! She then proceeded with looking for the same shoes in wider fit for me. She had to pull out 3 pairs. After trying them on, I felt the pain in the same area again. I decided that Hoka and I were not meant to be. Since my husband bought me Hoka and Hoka seems to be all the hype lately, I really wanted to give it chance. I've been married to New Balance for years. My feet are wide and they have wide shoes that make my feet happy. I happened to be wearing a pair of New Balance today. Kristen took notice to what I wore and to what I said. She brought out a pair of New Balance that she said is comparable to Hoka. They felt really good. I was sold. However, she didn't stop there. She brought out another pair for me to compare. After trying about 3 Hoka and 2 NB, I finally exchanged the Hoka for NB one that she recommended. If you are looking for a local shoe store that carries reputable running shoes with excellent customer service then you need to come here. Thank you Kristen for helping me!!! You are awesome.

The owner, Tina, was recording a live video when I entered, so another employee helped me. Both then helped pull items I found online and bring extras to the dressing room for me. Needless to say, I had so much fun trying on all the cute stuff. I told Tina my goal was to find cute LSU clothes to wear to the LSU game at Ole Miss, and Nola Rouge came to my rescue! So many adorable items to choose from! Nola Rouge has been open in Beauregard Town close to downtown Baton Rouge since shortly before the COVID pandemic began in 2020. Their social media presence certainly helps them stand out. They are only open about 10-2, so make sure to call first as Tina mentioned several times that she often gets there early or stays a little later to help out customers. Such great service!! And the prices are on point too. I love sales, and they certainly offer quite a bit. So check out Nola Rouge on social media, get their super user friendly app to shop, or go in person to try on all the adorable options! I love supporting local, and you can't get more Louisiana local than a NOLA born now Baton Rouge business owner.

Shoe Carnival is supposed to be a fun place to shop for shoes. I've always enjoyed going to their…read morelocations in the past. My first visit to this location proves that there's always an exception. The employees seem very disinterested in their work. The man checking me out at the register was too busy talking about a sketchy person who was in the store earlier that day with another employee to actually make sure I got what I needed. The store itself was in general disarray (which is to be expected at a shoe store) but there were barely any customers when I was there. I couldn't find what I wanted in my size, so I ended up buying a different size. One brazen employee asked me rather unprofessionally if I wanted to buy socks or a belt from a large plastic tub she was carrying around. Bizarre. If you asked me, I wouldn't recommend this particular location of Shoe Carnival.

After I realized that they opened at 11, I decided to stay..maybe I can find some shoes for work. When I pulled in, there was already a father and son waiting outside the door and a few other cars parked. Okay. They opened the doors and people started getting out and approaching the door. Cool. I'm walking in...nobody says, "Hey, hello, what's up" or anything. I've worked in retail before and we were always taught to greet EVERY customer coming through the door. Strike 1. I'm browsing the aisles, looking at shoes...however not many seem to be on display. Not the Vans or Converse. (These are located on the first aisle after entrance.) Is it because these are popular shoes right now, and you don't want people to steal?? Strike 2. Then, I quickly notice how messy and dirty the store is. Wayment, you JUST opened. Why is the trash from yesterday still here? Boxes and shoes everywhere. Did no one clean before closing last night? The mess alone ran me straight up outta there. Needless to say, I doubt I'll be visiting again!
