    Our class

Where to begin? The class started promptly at 7am. We held class in a corner of a park on Coronado Island. I was expecting we would be walking around the park shooting different subjects. I was wrong, not only did we stay in our corner of the park, our instructor Hector taught us to see photo opportunities exist even in confined spaces. Hector did an amazing job at teaching us to get the most from our cameras as well as ourselves, after an 11hour day, we all wanted more! We learned so many techniques but for me the best part was seeing the result of when Hector got behind the camera, the students all had subtle variations on our shot, Hector showed us his visions and they were remarkable. That lesson left a huge impact on all of us. In my opinion, this class was worth the cost, the time and for me, the 2 hour drive to get there. I may repeat this class as I want more time.

During the pandemic, I was trying to learn as much as I could about photography using online videos and courses, but something was still missing. I signed up for Hector's class and even though I was already shooting in manual mode, for the most part, I learned so much and immediately put my new knowledge into play. Within the week following his class, I took photos of two puppy litters and a couple of rescue dogs. They were my best photos yet. Hector is very kind, gentle, and he has a lot of patience. I highly recommend taking his class.

This class was scheduled for 830am-700pm and actually went longer till almost 900pm. We might of took longer (10 total students in the class on 2/5/11), but Hector and his friend Enrique stayed longer to finish the class without additional fees, etc. Hector loves his job and he loves photography and teaching. You can tell. He puts a lot of effort and time to his classes and there's a lot of one on one time if you need. The day was almost picture perfect but was a bit overcast in Long Beach (Shoreline area) this Saturday. But it was a great day to spend a Saturday in photography class. I learned how to set up my Canon 60D DSLR camera. Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, timer, etc...etc! You learn a lot from the class and I can't wait to take the 60D to the motorcycle races soon. One, Two, One, Two...thanks Hector. Great class, I recommend the class to anyone looking to learn how to use their SLR cameras. Don't take a class with a school or a camera store, not worth it. And don't be intimidated... In advance of a self guided nature / eco-trip and culture trip to Jamaica this Spring I wanted more advance skills of shooting Manually and knowing how to how to correctly set the camera ISO, Aperture, and shutter speed and read the meter to get that great shot rather shooting on Automatic and expecting the camera to do what I really want it to do. The Class teacher Anne Lynch is from New Jersey , studied at Parsons school of Design and worked in New York and recently relocate to San Diego. Very skilled teacher in a class room with many different skill levels and different equipment from high end Canon and Nikons to Point and Shoots small pocket camera such as mine, We talked about theory and went out side and practiced so that everyone got a chance to shoot and accomplish with all the manual settings, If you are still taking pictures in 'Auto' or 'Program' mode then this class is designed with you in mind! Photography 102 is not only a great follow up from our previous course, Photography 101, but it will allow to become more comfortable with using the various functions in your camera. You will learn the what the different exposure modes are and why you want to use them. You will finally learn how shutter speed, aperture and ISO work together and so much more like white balance, metering, flash, etc. This class is perfect for people like you trying to get out of "Auto" mode and take control of their images and stop taking blurry or improperly exposed images. Hands-on Learning Experience It is one thing to soak in the information from the class, but you know that you will need to practice what you learn to really master the concepts. In the local class with an expert instructor you will be walked through each lesson discussed in the online lecture and apply it to different subjects and scenarios. You will be challenged to learn quickly but have the comfort of the instructor by your side. You can expect to understand the following concepts after completing this class: *Aperture - How to de-focus a background or capture sharp focus throughout *Shutter speed and how to stop and blur motion or water *ISO in low light and bright situations, grainy vs. non-grainy *The M, A, S, P, or Tv, Av modes on your camera and when to use which *The various white balance settings and when to use them *Using exposure compensation when not in manual mode *Using metering in your camera to expose your images properly. This class is estimated to last 3 hours depending on the size of the group. This class is great for those who want a better understanding of their camera and want to learn how to control their settings rather than having the camera control them. What to Bring: Digital SLRs or Manual Controlled Cameras. If your camera has a M or Manual mode on it then this class is will be perfect for you. If you are unsure, please consult your manual or contact us. Please bring your cameras (fully charged) and fresh memory cards. Pen & paper to take notes if you wish to do so. This class is going to cover the essentials of mastering your camera. Ultimately, we want to get you away from "Auto" mode so you can start taking control over your camera settings and improve your images. Proceed with the registration below to reserve a spot for this class before it runs out. I love that they offer a free Photography 101 class to get you started allowing you to get a good prospective on their teaching style before you commit. Their "Meet & Critics" have also challenged me to step up my game in this industry. I also love that Local Photo Classes offer additional classes for those who want to learn more - including Flash, Portrait Lighting, Action/Motion Photography, Adobe Lightroom and lots more. Each class is taught by the pros in their field. If you enjoy learning photography in a fun, energetic, interactive and supportive environment, there's really no other place to look than Local Photo Classes! I look forward to my next class which will be Flash 101. I know I will leave that class with a much stronger understanding in how and when to properly use my flash, and like always when completing a class, I will have more confidence in using my gear. I strongly recommend Local Photo Classes for all your photography education. Hope to see you all there!!! Louie

I went with him since there was a Living Social deal for $35 a person instead of $99. I thought the class was very helpful for my husband and I've already seen improvements in his photographs. I brought 6 lenses, two flashes and there were people asking which lens to buy, so there's a wide range of photographers in the class. Okello is thorough, he's funny and he works with all different types of cameras so you won't have to worry about having a Nikon or a Canon or even a Sony or Panasonic, he works with you on it. I was excited about going out and shooting pictures, except for one thing; i couldn't figure out how to customize the camera to my liking. Cameras have changed since my high school years, and I wasn't about to pay big bucks just to educate me on how to operate a DSLR camera. Luckily my brother found a deal on livingsocial for a one day $80 class for just $40. It's called DSLR Workshops by Okello Dunkley. This class was held at the Sheraton in Mission Valley. Very easy to get to off the I-8 freeway. When you sign up for this class on Okello's website, he'll shoot you a courtesy email to remind you of the class as well as what to bring. The thing with Okello's DSLR classes is that he travels and holds these classes around the country all year so you have to catch his class when he's in town (check his website). He normally holds 3-4 sessions while he's in town so it works well with your schedule. The Saturday that me and my bro took his class, it was a full house and he started promptly at the time he stated. Okello provides you with a program that tells you what to pay attention to on your camera. He was well prepared for his presentation and very knowledgeable with the DSLR camera. He brought along extra DSLR cameras just in case you didnt have one, as well as lenses to test out on your camera. There was no question he couldn't answer. He hit all the basic things you needed to know about the DSLR camera, and compressed it all in just 3 hours. Everything from aperture, lenses, composition techniques, etc. After the class, he'll leave you feeling like you're ready to take a picture of the world. Okello's class taught me a lot of things I didn't know about my camera, and then some. I honestly would pay the whole $80 to take this class again. Whether you're a beginner or long time photographer, Okello will set you straight with your camera. When he's in town again, try to catch one of his classes; its well worth it.

So much has changed since I used my old school Minolta SLR when I did black and white photography during my good old dark room days, so signing up for Jason's class was going to get me up to speed on all the bells & whistles DSLR's have today. I'm thankful I have two years of photography under my belt, so knowing the fundamentals of ISO, aperture settings, F-stops, depth of field, etc hasn't changed, nor will it. Learning all the other stuff a fancy digital camera has the capacity of doing is another story. I attended the 101 class from 10:00 to noon and the speed of content of that class was okay. There were about twenty of us in the class and Jason's focus was primarily on composition. Stuff I knew already, but good to highlight on that once again. We spent the last thirty minutes of the class taking pictures of fruits and veggies. It was interesting to see how creative other students got from the pics they posted on the MeetUp page for this group. The afternoon 102 "Getting to Know Your Camera" was very informative. I'm glad he keeps the class size to under 15 attendees so he can answer all our questions and give us his undivided attention when needed. There's so much you need to learn about a camera and three hours seems like too long for a class, but it's really not. We didn't have any breaks, he just crammed through the topics, walked around the room to show us where to find certain features on our cameras and took some practice shots. Overall, the classes were informative. I want to sign up for more classes, primarily taking low light pics. He knows his stuff and doesn't get too deep with the information because I know how overwhelming it can be; some folks in the room had blank looks on their faces, that was pretty funny but they eventually understood what settings to put their camera on by the time class ended.
