Service for five course luncheon with live entertainment for residents and family
    Raymond N.

I was on rehab 4th floor since July 2022 and very happy. New residents get a bouquet of fresh flowers as well as an outfit to wear. Carlos the maintenance tech helped me connect my laptop computer. Mary E and Emily two of the CNAs were terrific to interact with as were most of staff. I got VERY QUICK email responses to my concerns from nurse supervisor Tamarra. So quick that when I called her phone she told me that she had already responded before I had time to look. I am now on long term 9th floor and very happy. I am being sent next to an assisted living place. Excellent WiFi in all spaces. Free phone calls to USA/Canada. Your own phone number for incoming calls. Be sure to check the number for incoming as in two rooms the number shown for incoming was wrong. Staff helped correct that. Free daily newspaper and TV in multiple languages. Daily sweep/mop Daily laundry [but sometimes clothes sent to other residents]. You can tell staff likes working here as some have been here more then twenty years. Tiffany, one of the physical therapists commutes from NJ to work here. They have a schedule of events on your room bulletin board that list things to do SEVEN DAYS A WEEK! The recreation director can give further details. Grace, my recreation director even helped me set up my new desktop computer that replaces the laptop that only had 2GB of memory. Dietary needs are taken care of. Renal meals for kidney patients. Diabetics will see that cookies come in sealed packs that say "sugar free". Kosher meals You can ask to make alternate choices to your menu. Dietitian and social worker terrific people to deal with. I am amazed at how accommodating they are. Very responsive to your needs/wishes. Before coming here I was given a list of fifty places to pick from. After reviews by myself and family on the WWW my final pick was Dry Harbor. One time I had to handwrite a list of doctors' appointments because they couldn't find the printed list previously turned in. DH may not be the perfect place; but it is as close to perfection as you can get! I HIGHLY recommend Dry Harbor

Used clothing that is several sizes too big I have no idea where these came from

When I raised this issue with the social worker, she repeatedly suggested I was making up the discharge date that they notified us of. This made setting up post discharge care needlessly difficult. There were also several packages that were delivered to my father, but not opened for him to access the contents (clothing), even with me calling several times to remind them that it's not enough to give him the sealed package, it needs to be opened. The first time, it took five days after delivery for him access the clothing we sent. Every time we called, we've received assurances, and they've lost my trust to follow through with their word. I would not recommend this rehab facility. Edit; after placing several additional calls, the person in charge of discharges finally returned my call the day before I go pick up my father to tell me he cannot be discharged tomorrow. She spends a significant of the phone call arguing with me, insisting that we spoke yesterday when we had not. She tells me if I'm picking him up it has to be at 11 AM. This would've been a great piece of information to relate to me sooner than the day before I am scheduled to travel across the country to pick him up on the flight I booked two weeks ago. She accuses me of "playing games" and refuses to connect me with somebody else. I still don't know if they will make a referral for him to have post discharge care. Although I have repeatedly told her I need this at this point, I have no confidence that she will actually do it.

She only had Medicare which only covered a little over 2 weeks the manager suggested that I can contact Medicare to extend her stay which she was approved for another9 days BUT did specify that it wasn't 100% covered. Watching a loved one suffer under the care of people who are supposed to provide compassion and dignity is something no family should ever experience. My family member entered this nursing and rehabilitation center needing care and support, and instead left this facility with sepsis, injuries, and severe neglect. Residents are left sitting for hours in soiled diapers filled with urine and feces because administration refuses to properly staff or provide adequate supplies. Many of these residents cannot advocate for themselves, especially those suffering from dementia, and instead of helping them, staff close the room doors and ignore their suffering. What we witnessed was beyond disturbing. There is a complete lack of empathy, accountability, and professionalism. Staff members laugh and make jokes when residents who do not speak English are trying to communicate. The discrimination and disrespect shown toward vulnerable elderly people is disgusting and unacceptable. This facility also mixes drug rehabilitation patients with elderly residents, creating what feels like a very unsafe environment for people who are already fragile and vulnerable. Families trust these places with their loved ones, expecting safety and care -- not fear and neglect. The food is terrible, often cold, and simply thrown in front of residents who cannot even feed themselves. No one seems to care whether residents actually eat or not. The level of neglect is horrifying. To make matters worse, the Director of Nursing Aurimel Buenviaje took everything as a joke and never once responded to escalations or concerns brought forward by our family. Complaints are ignored, accountability does not exist, and residents continue to suffer. Please, if you love your family member and want them treated with dignity, compassion, and proper medical attention -- especially during the most vulnerable stages of life -- do not consider this facility. Explore other options. No family should have to endure the pain, trauma, and helplessness that we experienced here. Shame on this facility for the treatment of its residents!

It's hard not to notice some scary one-star reviews for Queens Boulevard Extended Care (QBEC). But…read moreI see similar reviews for other hospitals, rehabs, nursing homes, etc. Our sad national reality is that these facilities are being horribly squeezed by insurers, especially Medicaid and Medicare, and at a time when our aging population is boosting patient census. So yes, there are times when a patient will ring for care and wait a long time for response. I experienced some of this during the early part of my one-month stay at QBEC before I became ambulatory. It's horrible. But until our societal priorities change, these facilities will always be strained and need more staff than they can afford. I'm angry, but not a QBEC. I'm angry about the societal values that limit what QBEC and all other such facilities can do. But as for the tings QBEC can control . . . I'd give more than five-stars if I could. This facility's strength is its people. All patients have a choice in how they will interact with staff; either respectfully or with disdain. Those who choose to treat staff with respect will find that the nurses, CNAs (aides), and transport people, are amazing. With all the horrible things we see in the news today, it's so uplifting to experience the kindness, compassion, and just-plain niceness staff gladly delivers. I started on the second floor and eventually was moved to the fourth. Interaction with staffs on both floors was always delightful. No matter how messed up I was physically, my interactions with staff always made me feel much better. I especially want to call out the physical and occupational therapists. I worked with Marriel (I hope I spelled her name correctly) for PT and Luciana for OT. Thanks to their knowledge, kindness and supportiveness, I can now walk unaided (I came home with a can and walker, but both are now optional)... even though I entered the facility as a dead-weight blob that could barley turn over in bed. I was told by others at the outset how hard therapy would be and folks around me wondered if I would really embrace it. Yes, it is a challenge. But Marriel and Luciana made it easy to embrace. They were never soft on me. They pushed me, often hard, to the point where I needed a nap after each session. But they never caused pain. They always knew how far they could push beyond what I had previously done, and that what their aim. And, of course, they always watched with eagle eyes and took appropriate precautions to make sure I was safe. And by choosing to always do therapy in the gym, as opposed to in my room, I was able to observe other therapists and patients. I saw other therapists work effectively with their patients at whatever condition the latter were. All were different, but I saw all make gradual progress each day. I'm happy to be home now. Who wouldn't be! But there is one bittersweet aspect to this. I have to say I think about and miss the many wonderful people at QBEC that showed me so much kindness and support.
