They are renovating here and there. The Welk is in Escondido, which is far from downtown San Diego. It's maybe 30-40 minutes driving. It is a large property that was owned privately by Lawrence Welk around the 1960s or 1970s. I learned it was only a Hyatt property less than five years ago, so maybe around 2022. It's good for families with children and older people who like to stay on site/don't want to drive too much for vacation. The biggest issue I encountered was the lack of service in terms of internet. I got no signal up in the Mountain Villas, and that's where most of their offices are too. I was told they are working on getting more towers, but you would think that's their number one priority especially if the staff can't even get service in their own office. The WiFi in the room did work, but ONLY in the room. That made it hard to access navigation in the parking lot when leaving. Two other issues I had during my stay in September 2026 were the mosquitos and the lack of cleanliness in the room. I just hate mosquitos, and I got bit like crazy. Yes, they were inside our room. After the first night, I tried to keep all the bedroom doors closed at all times. Our bathroom shower water pressure was so bad. There were three shower heads, and water would come out of two (and only two of them). The center rain shower head never worked. There was no way to adjust the temperature. Also I need to note that there were no elevators. My room was under ground level, so I had to take a flight of stairs down. The plus side of this hotel property is the variety of activities. They have four swimming pools, and one of them has a water slide/park. There is golf, tennis/pickleball, an $18 escape room, fitness center, free fishing pond, paid movie theater, $8 climbing wall, free ping pong tables, and more! I think it would have been nice to have a brochure with activities listed by alphabetical order instead of by location. Also it should be noted whether reservations are required. I tried to go to the climbing wall, but they didn't have any available times anymore. If I had known reservations were required, then I would have contacted them prior to my stay. There's lots of free parking. Make sure you have the parking pass displayed on your dashboard. For food, they have a market available on site, but we would just go down to eat in San Diego. We totally ignored everything in Escondido, oops. I bet once they renovate all the rooms, this property would do much better. I have hope for them!

Additionally, this property is at least 20 min from any restaurant so the fact that there were very few dining options on property and a tiny market that charged $9 for peanut butter made meal times difficult.
