When one drives a car past warantee, sooner or later you're gonna get hit. Especially for as long as that check engine light was on in my 2012 Passat. Through a series of recommendations and word of mouth, i ended up here at Drive Safe not far from home. Let's talk about the owner, a young guy named JV. It's pretty obvious he went to Harvard for mechanics. He knows cars inside and out and for an oldster like me, yes, he reflected the move from old carburetors to today's rocket science. He is incredibly courteous and responsive and made sure i understood what was going on and believe me he had to repeat it a few times which, between that and my constant phone calls, speaks volumes to his patience. He is a guy who understands how much of a hit an older car can be. In my family we have someone who can do a lot of work, but his facilities are limited. Yet JV was completely OK with working out with me what would be done at Drive Safe and what would be done by my family member. This resulted in a significant savings. As long as the work was up to snuff, of course. He did the bulk of what was needed which, of course was top notch and allowed my car to finally pass inspection. The work was pretty major: purge valves and emissions control systems and a few other things which have probably just doubled the life expectancy of my Passat. There is no getting around the fact getting her back up to snuff was a costly proposition. But when the chips are down and you need to get the car back up and running to allow you to live, this is the guy you want in your corner. Lessons learned: perform your scheduled maintenance!!!! And when you do have major work, you are at your most vulnerable and you want someone trustworthy like JV and the crew at Drive Safe behind you. This week my father died. My mother is fragile and in shock. Image how it feels to have to stop everything and go to get an emissions test done. Set to expire. We had no choice but to go today. We wander into Drive Safe Auto Center. The staff had no idea. Nor did we share our story. The gentleman behind the counter was so nice. We received prompt and professional service that helped get us in and out. It was a small job. We all know emissions is not a big ticket item. Took my car in and was told I would be contacted back. Never received a call back. I tried to call with no answer or call back. I ended up going to the shop because i could not get any one on the phone for days. Got to the shop was told nothing could be done for my car. Was advised to go to a specialist and to move my car by days end. I understand if something could not be done, but to not have any communication then to be told to move my car by days end as in that manner was not appreciated, especially after the lack of communication. This is not me saying they did not try to fix my car, this is me saying part of customer service is effective communication. I would hope others have had a better experience than I just received. read more

So i've been here a couple times. They're pricey but effective. They're located close to where I live so they're convenient. I personally have never had any issues with the guys who work here but I know a few people who have. These guys sometimes convince people their cars are practically falling apart and need an array of parts replaced and maintenance done. I came here not too long ago to diagnose a check-engine light and was charged $130 for the diagnostic test. I need a part of my car replaced and found another place that is charging me $150 less for it. Overall this isn't a bad place to get basic work/maintenance done when you need something done quickly but prepare to pay the price for it. read more

I just moved out of Rockaway and one of the things I was sad to leave behind? A garage I trusted. I lived in Rockaway for 6 years and these guys were awesome. They were always willing to take a look at my car, even with me always dropping in without an appointment. They would look into weird sounds for me, and were always level with me about whether or not they thought it was something I should worry about. When it came to costly repairs, they never tried once to nickel and dime me, and they always let me know if it was something they thought was urgent or if I could fix it in a couple of months. Also, their work is a fair price. I travel to MN and TN with some frequency, so I have checked prices in both states for some of the repairs, thinking I could get it cheaper outside of NY and their prices were almost always on par with what I was quoted out of state. I couldn't recommend Drive Safe Auto Center more. I need an oil change right now and am already missing Drive Safe!! read more
