I had to go in to dispute an overdue toll bill that was sent to an old address and I had such a positive experience. The ladies at the front desk were so helpful and thorough. Andrea and Wanda were angels. They pointed me in the right direction and sent me to the City Hall around the corner to get proof of my move. They were so patient, warm and friendly and at the end of the day they were able to fix the issue and help me finally get a toll pass to avoid any future mix ups. Spent hours on hold trying to pay bill and get DMV stop removed. They put me on hold dozens of times to tell me they delivered and missed toll letter 9 years ago for a vehicle I disposed of 8 years ago to the neighbor of the house I had vacated. I have nothing in collections for this mystery account that has never been an issue with my purchasing and registering multiple vehicles and renewals over the last 8 years but now they refuse to take of the stop despite my current account being paid in full. Filed several complaints with better business bureau and seeking legal remedy due to the utter incompetency of this unethical and disgusting company. This is the most corrupted company I have ever experienced and it makes me sick that they are able to keep people from registration renewal and impede on my ability to travel to work or anywhere. I called and told them this that I believed it was a mistake they looked closer at the picture the camera captured and seen it was in fact a mistake their camera misread another cars plate number as mine. I spend +/- $1,000 a year easily going through these tunnels, and yet once a year these clowns send a picture of my plate saying I didn't pay. Just like clock work. I received a bill for Drive ERT. I am a Maryland resident and have never been anywhere near this location. The Photo they used in the original bill was a picture of a black box without any license plate. I submitted a dispute in December of 2022 stating I had never been through the tunnel or area and did not own a vehicle with the license plate that was on the original bill they sent me. I assumed it was resolved. May of 2023 they sent me a bill with a late fee of $25.00 or original bill of $6.95. This is a laughable. Apparently I used this tunnels when I drove to Virginia Beach. I never before ever saw or heard of Elizabeth tunnels . The only tunnel I used had a place to pay and it was 16 dollars . And then after moving I got a credit collector's bill and then a day latter a bill from them . At first I was sure it was a scam. Totally confused. How can you have a Toll with no toll booth for customers to pay the toll. You have to use the EZpass to go through the toll, then you get a bill later for late charges and processing fees when you could have just paid the toll right then and there especially when you are not living in Virginia. I received a bill from them saying I owed for a tunnel toll. The thing is, the license plate shown on the statement is not even close to any of vehicles I own or ever owned. Plus, I have never even been to Portsmouth, VA. I sent them the information about my vehicles from the VA DMV site. This entire thing seems like a scam. You cannot even see anything in the photo on the statement; it is black with two things that look like cat eyes. I wish that I could avoid the tunnels but the alternative is to swim across the river. For someone who doesn't live here and has no interest in buying a transponder, these folks do not make it easy or cheap to pay the toll. First, there is no tollbooth and there really isn't much of a sign telling you where to go to pay. If you drive a rental car, do you want to spend ten minutes hunting around for the "Pay by Plate" website or do you want a $25 service fee from the rental car company for a $1.25 toll? Duh. The tunnel is serviceable enough if the traffic is light. If it's not? They measure backup by the number of miles. Yuck. Last night, I rode through behind six motorcyclists who thought it was hilarious to stop the traffic so that they could make EXTRA noise with their stupid motorcycles in the tunnel. read more

ERT has sent me 2 notices regarding tolls when I had an E-ZPass transponder in my vehicle. I use this same vehicle, with the same transponder in states from Delaware to Florida weekly with NO issues, except with ERT. They assume no responsibility to faulty or weak receiving equipment and refuse to assist. I'm guessing engineers with ERT do not understand statistics or the customer service reps (far stretch here) do not log service tickets. One of the worst government support agencies (yes, I know they are private) I've had to deal with. They make DMV look amazing. read more

This company says they sent a bill to Camp Lejune in 2019 but everyone in the military knows the on base mail system when living in the barracks is trash. If we had an important package coming, we would have it sent to a friend's house off base. The mail just never gets to us. We never even knew we owed this company money and they never alerted us. One day 3 YEARS LATER we receive a letter from a lawyers office wanting to represent us for our $80 bill we owe. DriveERT is a private company that works with Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP. to enforce public law. This in and of itself is a major red flag. Additionally, I received a bill from them that states I drove through Midtown Tunnel E toll in January with a temporary plate on my vehicle. I havent been anywhere near Norfolk/Portsmouth in years and was unable to submit a dispute online with the error message "The statement cannot be disputed. Please contact our Customer Care Center at (757) 837-0840 for details." After calling the first 2 times, the automated machine hung up on me. The third time, after a 20 min queue time, I was able to speak with a DriveERT representative that 'filed a case for me' and I would be contacted by the dispute department in 1-2 days. Until then, the bill is valid and I will still be charged the 'late fee' if they aren't able to resolve in time. Complete bullshit organization that takes advantage of American citizens, BRAVO! read more

I suddenly received a mail from a debt collector said I owe $104.7 for the toll of Elizabeth River Tunnels. It is my first time to know I owe toll fee for the tunnel. It mentioned me I visited Norfolk in 2017 Nov, but I totally can't remembered I saw any notice about the toll. It is insanely unfriendly for the visitors! It absolutely is a scam! My husband got a bill for using a bridge in a place he has never been, at a time when we absolutely would not have been there (we do not go out after midnight, ever. We are in bed by 8, up at 430. Plus he lets google track his location history for some unknown reason so he can check, not that he needs to). The invoice cites a license plate that has absolutely nothing to do with either of us. Yes I suppose the tunnel is fine. But we were just traveling to VA Beach for the weekend. We did see the signs to pay the toll for use of the tunnel. 1.90 per car. We got the money out and ready. Never saw a place to pay the toll. Thought it was weird but drove on. Now 2 weeks later I receive a bill in the mail for 5.25. I called the number and asked about why I'm receiving such a high bill. I was told "you're paying the 1.90 + the processing fees for us sending you a bill" . LMAO!! Ok that's really not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things but this is bullsh**. Absolutely horrible. I had to pay $85.00 for this toll. I was in VA for work a few months back and so I move around a lot. The bill was sent to an address I'm barely at due to frequent PCS changes in the military. Overtime the late fees built up in the mail without my notice and each late fee is $25! To Whom it May Concern: I am contacting you regarding the ERT tolls. I am one of the individuals that have had frozen and not able to renew my registration. I know I am "legally" guilty. But, like many others, I have extreme difficulty with the tolls. When you figure in rent, insurance, utilities, groceries, etc. and the fact that my income is less than $30,000 a year, the tolls are a burden. Some time ago, I received a letter from Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, a law firm, indicating that the delinquency was turned over to them and that I would need to pay them. So, after I had already sent emails and letters to ERT and this firm but received no response. One of the correspondences had a check enclosed for a partial payment that was cashed two weeks later. With all the letters and email, over the course of several weeks, I never receive a single reply from ERT or the law firm. I finally get to a point in early February where I can make another partial payment. I decide to go to the website that is provided by the law firm. Now, the original debt was $2,265.00. The check for the partial payment I had first sent was for $200.00. When I get logged into the site, it indicates that all I have due is $58.13. I went ahead a paid it. But then called the firm. I indicated that I wanted to try to make partial payments. They referred me back to ERT. I call ERT and ask if I can make partial payment arrangements. I was informed no, but they would settle for an amount of $1500.00. I did not have that. And there was no additional effort to help me. I realize there is a toll relief program. Unfortunately, it is only for residents of Portsmouth and Norfolk. I live in the Western Branch portion of Chesapeake. As I am sure you are aware of the geography in the area, the tunnels are the shortest way to get to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. It is possible to go I64 around, but that is a considerably longer distance and a lot of construction which can not only put more miles on a vehicle but will also add a lot of time on the trip. And in taking a trip to destinations such as Downtown Norfolk, ODU or Ghent it is not a feasible request. read more

While accessing the tunnel is convenient, it has some serious drawbacks. The costs of the tolls are astronomical!! When you have nonpayment status your account goes to collections, which is far. However, what is ridiculous is that they randomly pick what they want to send to court, collections and what they want to send to DMV to put a hold on your account. Which is crazy! If you want to collect the monies owed send it all to collections so that it's paid off. Don't go through a backdoor to screw someone over, especially when they want to resolve the situation. The office staff was friendly and helpful with addressing my concerns. However, some of the staff tries to cover their behinds when they give out misinformation to begin with. Hello, My name is Vega Perry.I'm writing this formal complaint on your reviews because I am very disenchanted at my experience with Elizabeth River tunnels. Now I totally understand they are an entity under the umbrella of VDOT but my formal complaint is with Elizabeth River tunnels. I will formally mention the supervisor's name: Blaire Green and the employee under her supervision, Robert Atkins. I was traveling into Portsmouth between the exits of Effingham and Fredericks boulevard and there was a blanket laying out on the interstate.I tried my best to avoid going over this object before realizing exactly what it was because there was a car on the rear of me and also to the right of me so there was no way that I would be able to avoid having an accident versus going over this actual object. Now once I went over the object I realize it was a comforter and it went all the way inside of my car to my serpentine belt aa well locked into my fan breaking my serpentine belt and also causing my car to stop I had to try to get myself over to the right hand shoulder so that I would not be hit by the ongoing traffic on such a MAJOR interstate. My safety was at Major risk and thanking Mr Jamar Pitts from VDOT Whomel came to assist because this actual object in the street was supposed to have been removed by Mr Robert Adkins because this was his area that he was contracted to cover but he never remove the object so Mr Pitts came to remove the object because the surveillance cameras surveillance occurrence while played out. I have put in a formal complaint with VDOT in regards to the circumstances that happened with Elizabeth River tunnels Representatives.I'm awaiting a response as to repairs for my car and also compensation for my inconveniences and also being without my automobile and having to use other sources of Transportation. I am a waiting to hear back from them ASAP AS THIS SITUATION JUST OCCURRED ON, March 24th! I will not leave any further contact information as they have my information but I just wanted to formally put this complaint on the side because I am very disenchanted because my safety was put at risk and there were many safety barriers that were challenged during this occurrence.
