Plenty of people in Brighton and Hove look down on Hastings and St Leonard's. How wrong they are. It's not the land that time forgot but a secret they haven't discovered yet. If the Horse and Groom was in Brighton, it would be packed with wannabe London playwright émigrés moaning about the BBC. But here, it's a friendly, lively, arty boozer with a good time vibe and an insatiable thirst for real ale. The beer is good. They have an array of real ales that change regularly and all your usual lagers, spirits and wines too. There's a little patio out back and a selection of books if you fancy a read while you sup. My only gripe is that they close very promptly at 11. Maybe they show more lenience for proper regulars? Best of all, it's very welcoming. I got chatting to the locals in no time and met an aging rocker, a computer programmer and a writer in one evening. The attached restaurant, St Clement's, comes highly recommended but I've never eaten there but if it's as good as the pub you'll love it.

The Crown is just the right size to feel cosy without being too crammed, a bit dark on the sunniest day of he year perhaps, but then it's only sensible to take shelter at midday. I always insist on having fish and chips when by the seaside and was almost disappointed to not find this basic pub grup offering here ... the menu is a lot more sophisticated and I had my cod served served on a bed of sweet potato. The fish is caught locally and was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a taste of the chips as a starter along with freshly baked bread (on the premises!) and pickled eggs (I was too squeamish to try those, but apparently they were delicious and definitely not of the turned-blue-on-the-counter type). And we didn's stop there, the pudding menu was just too tempting. I decided to stick to ice cream (bakewell tart flavour!) and soon had food envy as other's plum compote, tarts and cakes arrived - everything tasted just as wonderful as it sounded on the menu and looked on the plate. Lunch at the Crown Inn alone is reason enough not to leave it too long till the next trip.

The term 'community pub' is much overused and usually incorrectly but this place truly is the beating heart of the area. It's a big pub with a pool table, a separate restaurant area, a well used juke box and often live music on a Friday and Saturday night. They also have free wifi. It's a friendly, workaday pub popular with families, couple, young people and people propping up the bar. It always seems to be busy. One of the main draws is certainly the food. They do excellent dinners - roasts, local fish and chips, pies and all sorts of lovely home cooked fare. Thoroughly recommended for a feed.

It…read morehas a "Michelin Bib" which, for the uninitiated (like me, prior to googling it), denotes good quality food at moderate prices which is a nice touch, as it allows reasonably priced restaurants to gain recognition next to the big boys. Hmmm, that was a rather long sentence, there will be less of those as the review goes on as they can often make paragraphs look intimidatingly drawn out and give the impression they are a bore to read, despite the content, which I can promise will be nothing short of fascinating. 51 words. Get in. Anyway, I'm sure you'd rather hear about the restaurant then have me waffle on about sentence length, and I have to say it is outstanding. First off, I recommend booking, certainly on the weekends as it can pack out. There is a lovely, little pub next door called the Horse and Groom which acts as a 'feeder' (not my words!) for St Clements, which makes choosing where to go for a drink beforehand a very straightforward process. The staff were friendly, and 'well paced'. By this, I mean they gave us enough time to peruse the menu and didn't clear the table before we were done, which is a sign of good training and an experienced team. They offer a set menu at £26.50 for three courses which has three choices per course. One of the mains is vegetarian, however the starters were all meat and fish dishes. Sinfully, there was NO chocolate option for dessert. Quite why I stayed is a mystery. The full menu is around £16.50 for a main, with starters coming in at the £8 mark and desserts at just over a fiver. I went for the Pork Terrine with Sourdough and Picalilli, Seabass with lemon, corriander and Thai Salad and Chocolate Truffle cake with cognac soaked raisons and pistachio ice cream. It was all delicious. Like insanely good. With the wine (some chilean thing I picked to impress my companion. I find the trick with wine is that you don't have to know a lot, just more than your date), it came to around £100 for two of us. Since going, St Clements has become the place I take anyone I want to impress whenever I'm in this neck of the woods.
