Weighing the good with the bad, I am giving this spa a two-star rating. I currently reside in Los Angeles, CA and was excited to book a spa day for myself, my best friend, and my niece, while we were visiting the Upper Peninsula for the holidays. On October 18, 2024 (two months in advance of our vacation), I began emailing back and forth with Kara, to set up services for Monday, December 23, 2024.
On or about December 18, 2024, I realized that after the initial confirmation via email, I had not heard anything since, so I decided to reach out to ensure that everything was set for our agreed upon date/time. Upon calling Drift Spa (5 days before our reservation), I learned that our reservation had been lost, and nothing was on the books at this point in time. I received a phone call back from Whitney, the assistant manager, who was lovely, apologetic, and scrambled to call staff in to cover our services for our previously scheduled appointments on December 23, 2024. I learned at that time that the individual I had previously been communicating with via email (Kara) was actually the manager of the spa who dropped the ball on our reservation. I was flexible, professional, and polite while Whitney worked to fix everything, as I understand we are all human and make mistakes.
Being that none of us live in the Upper Peninsula, we were unaware that despite the fact that Drift Spa is located in central time zone, they choose to go by eastern time. We arrived at the casino over an hour early and decided to peruse the gift shop while killing time until our reservation. My phone was initially on silent, so I missed the first call from the spa. Approximately 30 minutes after our arrival to the casino, I received a call from the spa and the person on the other end of the phone inquired if we were still coming because our reservation began 30 minutes ago. I explained that we were at the casino and thought our appointment began in another 30 minutes, but that we would come up now.
Upon our arrival to the spa, we were met with two of the RUDEST receptionists you could possibly imagine. One, named Angie, was rolling her eyes and shaking her head at us as I was attempting to speak to Kara about our misunderstanding on the time zones, and work out an alternative plan. The other, a white female, wearing white rimmed glasses with a large butterfly tattoo on her neck, was also adding in her two cents where it was not needed, and was not at all part of the solution to remedy the problem. I'm still not quite sure why these two women were even involving themselves in a situation that was being working out between myself and the spa manager. I would highly recommend that in their customer service positions, more training in hospitality management is afforded to them, because unfortunately, these are the two individuals you see first when you first walk in and their behavior was not only unprofessional, but completely unacceptable.
One thing I did appreciate was how Kara was trying to help us to trim some of our services in time, so we could still enjoy what was left of our "spa day." However, the mood was already ruined the moment we walked in the door and were greeted with such resistance, hostility, and completely unprofessional behavior by the two receptionists who should be warm and welcoming.
Despite this, I would like to highlight that Alan, the masseuse, and Katie and Alex, the nail technicians, were nothing short of amazing. It's so unfortunate for their sake that the gatekeepers to this spa have the potential to spoil the entire experience, after immediately walking through the doors.
Although I accept full responsibility for the time zone confusion, why is it okay for the spa to completely overlook and mess up our reservation for which I was nothing but patient, gracious and understanding over, BUT, when the customer (who does not live here and is not familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the choices regarding what time zone a business chooses to operate in despite where they are located), the customer is ostracized and treated like some type of an offender? It should also be noted that between myself and my two guests, we spent almost $600 and upon checkout, I was not even told "thank you" by the two receptionists I mentioned above. I really wanted to love this place, but based on my overall experience, I would not recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing spa day. For this reason, I will not be returning in the future and will be taking my business elsewhere. This was certainly not even close to a $600 experience for me. read more
