Came home last week for a my sister's wedding, and since I am on vacation, decided to stay a week…read more My mother and aunt have been here several times, and I have had used their oils when I came home to visit, so we decided to go out to Dressed by an Olive so I can have my own oils and vinegar to take home to London with me. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the warmth of the soft spoken employees. I'm assuming the one that was helping us was one of the owners. She was wonderful, asked me what I liked, and suggested some wonderful flavours for me to try. I told her I used the garlic infused olive oil and oregano infused white balsamic vinegar, and she immediately knew I was a savoury kind of person. I tried a few more combinations and settled on the Tuscan Herb Olive Oil, the Oregano Vinegar, the A-Premium Vinegar and the Basil Olive Oil. They have a promotion where you buy three and get one free. The small bottles were about $12 each. If I run out quickly, next time she told me to move up a size, but you don't need to use a lot to get that full flavour of the oils and vinegar. What a wonderful and pleasant experience. Both staff were super helpful, and recommended a place for me in London to try if I run out before being able to come back here, which I will be, because I enjoy cooking, and using these delicious infused oils and vinegar just make the experience that much better.

Where Salem Gardens stands out is their dedication to plants that are unique. They have the best popcorn, breads, and cookies. The owners, a 40+ year landscaper and his wife, put decades of knowing and care into this shop. They built it by hand, and crafted it to be an incredible community space. They host fun community events like glass cutting and fairy basket making classes. The prices are incredibly reasonable. This is about a 45 minute drive from me but I know I'll be back!!! A well worth visit

I walked in the store and since I was so used to going to the location in London, that it's a completely different, smaller layout here, but still offers the same great items I found in London, the only selection that wasn't great was the sushi, I wish there was more of a selection of this item. The produce looked fresh, there is a great selection of meats and cheeses, the salad bar is new to me as the location in London doesn't offer a salad bar to create your own salad. I had opted for a pear & arugula salad which was absolutely delicious; I had also picked up a caesar salad for my brother in law as well as some chocolate chip cookies! Since Remark is a higher end market, the prices are on the higher side, they're local so they don't price match, but they do carry local produce and meat from local farms, so if you're looking for a discount, this won't be your grocery store. I love Remark, I hope to come more often!

My first visit was to pick up some coffee from Bean Brothers, a michigan-based brand that I had found out was being carried in person by Pillar and Pride. I could just drop in and grab some when I was running low. Checking out their website ahead of time, I was excited to see the goods that they carried and showcased. Wellness is a theme of their product offerings, with a variety of supplements and items to help atune yourself to a feeling of balance. But there's also a lot of good food. :) Tyree offered me a sample of some barbecue sauce from Williams Food Company, another local brand. It was delicious, and a bottle of it went home with me. (If you go by it's the five spice sauce, which is really different from any sort of barbecue sauce off the shelf. It has a little kick, and it's a little sweet. Go in and try some.) It's also worth mentioning that in the back corner there are a variety of books the touch on topics that speak to thriving in your life, children's books where kids of color can see themselves represented in the pages, and titles looking at improving your health. Lots of local authors are represented here too. It's an awesome variety. P+P also has a great presence on social media, and hosts events in their space, to try and further promote the ideas are at the core of their mission. Actually I first became aware of them because they were hosting discussions on Instagram Live about COVID and Detroit's concerns and discussions around a vaccine that would hopefully protect them. It was honest and frank conversation that gave me a lot of perspective that I wouldn't have had otherwise. At the heart of Pillar and Pride is the family that runs it. You can tell they care about Detroit so much. You can tell that they care about the people they serve. And if that's not a reason to go check them out, I don't know what is. :) Support black owned businesses. Support small businesses. Support Detroit.
