This review is for Country Fair Cinnamon Rolls specifically. They really are the best cinnamon…read morerolls ever! Huge, freshly baked, served warm, ooey and gooey, with the perfect amount of frosting (i.e., A LOT of frosting), surprisingly not too sweet, and the Tres Leches cinnamon roll was genius! Drenched with deliciousness. I'm drooling as I write this. The staff is also super friendly! If they're in town, you must go!!

I do enjoy the Santa Cruz County Fair, but it has its negatives and positives. Positives: - more local activities and exhibits (you can feel the pride!) - more little shops and carts - camels!!! - more agriculture (specific flower exhibits, specific tree exhibits, etc) - it has some of the same things you'd find at the other fairs, like the miniature pig races, a magic act, a Ferris wheel, some other rides, food vendors like funnel cakes and BBQ. Negatives: - no fireworks (like at Alameda County Fair) - high ticket price ($22/adult, $15 parking) - fewer daily promotions for lower entrance fees - smaller ride area (some fairs have 2 sections: one for older kids, one for younger kids) - smaller fair overall - fewer exhibits and shows (ie, no motocross, no horse racing) - no large concerts Overall it is very fun to attend with friends and loved ones, but it can be pretty expensive, and you don't need to spend all day here since there isn't that much to do compared to other County Fairs. I can't complain though... I always have fun here.

La Pastorela by El Teatro Campesino, is the classic shepard's tale of good triumphing over evil…read more Luis Valdez has provided the central coast with wonderful plays for many many years, and this production is right up there. The playhouse, located in bucolic San Juan Bautista, was sold out. The play lasts about 80 minutes with no intermission. The physical layout was as a theater in the round with 4 tiers of seating surrounding the raised center stage. However much of the action was all throughout the theater. While primarily in Spanish, there was a sprinkling of English to assist the non-Spanish-speakers in understanding the plot. The leading actors were female with Luzbel being striking in her costume, acting and singing. As was San Michael the Archangel. Speaking of singing, there was a lot of it and it sounded good. The symbolism was well scripted and enjoyable to behold. One part of the play that brought a smile to my face with memories was the use of a Pachuco and zooters from Luis's "Zoot Suit". A live trio provided great accompaniment to the play, never being too loud. This is a Christmas play that has seen many adaptations here, as well as around the Latino community, It is a biannual production for ETC, alternating with "La Virgen del Tepeyac", so you'll want to catch it before it closes on 21DEC25. From ETC's website: https://elteatrocampesino.com/lapastorela/ Pastorelas, or Shepherds Plays, originated in medieval Europe as religious dramas and were later brought to the "new world" and Alta California by the Spanish missionaries. "La Pastorela" recreates the long trek of those first pastores to the holy site of the Nativity. The Lucifer character or Luzbel and his demons attempt to thwart the shepherds from reaching Bethlehem and the Holy Manger. However, in a dynamic clash of good against evil, San Miguel, the Archangel, and an army of angels overpower the demonic powers of Luzbel and the shepherds are at last free to complete their journey. An adaptation of "La Pastorela" based on a traditional version from San Luis Potosi in Mexico was originally created in 1975 by Luis Valdez and premiered first as a puppet show. The original script was provided by Longina Montoya of Hollister, CA. The play was later transformed into a street theater spectacle from 1977-79 before settling as a play performed inside Mission San Juan Bautista. In 1991, it was adapted into a film starring Linda Ronstadt and Cheech Marin, becoming El Teatro Campesino's first feature length film, and in 2019 "La Pastorela" was performed inside the ETC Playhouse for the first time. "La Pastorela" has been performed in San Juan Bautista biannually during the holiday season, alternating with "La Virgen del Tepeyac" - making these holiday productions ETC's longest running tradition.

This might be the only Chicano owned theatre company left in America. The playhouse is inside and old packing house and has that historic aura that takes you back to the Chicano theater days of the 1960s. There is now a historical timeline in the rear of the building that highlights all of the work they have done up to 2016. We went to see the play about Carlota and the actors were amazing! The set design, lighting and costumes were top notch. I wish I lived closer and I would come way more. Please come and support wonderful local theater.
