Never been to Dragoncon before till this year. So much fun to see all these characters around/come to life. If I were 8 years old, I would have been more excited. Parking wise - Err, not sure where you'd go. My bf works DT and we used his parking pass :D The way Dragoncon was set up, I was fairly happy with. All hotels were connected (even to the food court!) and was constantly moving. I can't really complain. Plus it was an indoor/outdoor event, so that made it so much better. Who wants to stand outside for hours while taking pictures and sweating hardcore? No one. Some of the costumes I saw were so good, like WOW. I could tell they took a lot of time and effort. #impressive. I don't think the membership deal is worth the money, IMO. But it IS worth it if: you want to stay all night, get into the special panels, and see celebrities sign some stuff. I only wanted to walk around the Hotel Lobbies and wander around there. (I also only went for 3 hours on Sunday - a chill day. Not sure how strict they are on a 'last' day) I saw a ton of people at the food court, too. In all honesty, if you're like me and not a hardcore Dragoncon person and just like to peruse the area and see cool stuff, don't buy the memberships and just walk around. Every year I look forward to Labor Day weekend. The joke goes "where else can you hang out with 50,000 of your closest friends?" If you're even a little bit nerdy, it's completely true. I've been going for 12 years now and I imagine I'll be going for at least another 12. The last couple of years there were some problems with crowding, but this year those issues disappeared. Construction at the Marriott is finished, adding a new ballroom and the Atrium Level where you can easily sit and people-watch. They also added the Sheraton as another official hotel, so the total is up to FOUR HOTELS. Every year there are more big name guests, and more and more of them are starting to enjoy mingling with the fans in the evenings. Yes, it's total madness, but it's so much fun. If only they'd do one in Feb so I wouldn't have to wait a whole year between cons... read more

I am truly at a loss of words on how to review DragonCon. I could write a book about it, and still wouldn't do it justice. I've attended DC since 2008, and it has been a life changing experience. I'm so nutty about it, as is everyone else who's ever gone. We all basically plan our year around it, reminisce about it the rest of the time, and have the absolute best week (I extend the weekend to nearly a week long affair) of the year, every year! On the surface, DC is a multi-genre convention. It covers various fandoms, including comics, anime, costumes, sci-fi, fantasy, literature, science... and well there's over 30 different fandoms. They're actually called Fan Tracks, and this is one of the many features that distinguishes DC from other cons. Each Fan Track has its own programming schedule. You can have 30 different panels going on in any given hour. So really, it's fair to say the con is a combination of multiple small cons going on under the same roof. TIP: Download the app or grab an old school booklet from registration, and take some time to look over the immense schedule. Pick out a few must see events, and go with the flow the rest of the time. Speaking of roof, there's another distinguishing feature. DC does not take place in a giant convention center, as 99% of conventions do. Instead, it is spread out over the course of 5 host hotels, and the adjacent America's Mart. The host hotels are Hyatt Regency, Marriott Marquis, Hilton Atlanta, Sheraton Atlanta, and Westin Peachtree. These hotels lend their many ballrooms and conference rooms to host official events, such as panels, contests, and dance parties. They also air DCTV, a closed circuit broadcast of panels and con-related content such as skits and interviews, in their guest rooms. It's a great alternative to waiting hours to get into a celebrity filled mega panel. The host hotels usually sell out a year in advance. It's actually the hardest aspect about attending DC. But there are plenty of overflow hotels nearby, and you could of course drop in and leave if you live in town. Use Uber or MARTA (Peachtree Center station) to get there, as parking will be full all weekend because it's Labor Day weekend. TIP: Gone are the days of being able to sneak in. They have security checking badges just to get into the hotels, especially at night time. Outside of checking things out for free on Thursday night, you'll have to get a pass (single day, multi-day, or weekend pass). The weekend pass goes on sale a year in advance, and is actually cheapest if you buy in advance. It gets more expensive as the con approaches. The next distinguishing feature is the party vibe, hence why one of the con's nicknames is "Nerdi Gras."The aforementioned programming runs 24 hours. It does not adhere to the standard 10am-7pm you would expect at cons. You want to dance at a rave until the sun comes up? Go for it. You want to go play a random board game at 2:00am? Have at it. There's -always- something to do at any given hour. "Where are the parties?" is a common question I see from newbies. There are 3 answers to that. Officially, first the late night dance parties in the giant ballrooms where a DJ plays music, and you can dance to your heart's content. Second, you have multiple room parties going on. Make new friends, ask them what they're doing or what they've heard. It's easy to go from the main floors to the hotel rooms and back again. Third, the main floors themselves are giant parties in a sense. When you have people packing an entire lobby level, with music playing from speakers or from costumes, forming random Conga lines, there are good times all around you. The hotels of course have their bars well staffed. Prices are what you'd expect for hotel bars. Bonus is that they're very lax about letting you carry your drink around from one hotel to the next. They don't even care where you got it from, so bring your own alcohol and save money. Sharing is a great way to make new friends. TIP: Pace yourself, whether it's just a day visit, as you'll be walking several miles easily as you go from one event to another; or for the whole weekend, as you could tire out easily and party too hard too soon. Of course I can't write a Yelp review without mentioning food. You have access to the Peachtree Center food court (with extended hours), vendors and restaurants within the hotels themselves, and several nearby restaurants in the downtown area. Best to bring some food and snacks from home, and store in your hotel room as well. This is the best geek convention in my opinion! You will be spoiled after going to DC, and all others won't be able to live up to the good times. Dragon*Con embodies all that is good and geeky in Atlanta. It's the one weekend every year when obsessive nerds of all stripes can march with impunity around downtown. Be you Klingon, Storm Trooper, zombie, Wonder Woman, Johnny Cage, or just another fan in a Woot teeshirt... you'll fit right in. Who won't fit in? All of those college football fans who inevitably travel to Atlanta for the big game of Labor Day weekend. Those poor souls always look scared to death, sitting in the hotel bar nursing a Miller Lite and thinking they've stepped into an alternate dimension. In a way, I suppose they have. What's great about Dragon*Con is that there is no one "right" way to experience it. Some people try to attend as many star-studded panels as possible. Some prefer to focus on costuming and cosplay. Some gather in hotel basements and spend days playing tabletop games. Still others just show up for the free parade and the unparalleled people watching. The parade is probably what most people think about in regard to Dragon*Con. It usually takes place on Saturday at around 10:00AM. It's free to attend--after all, it's on public streets--but it gets mobbed with tens of thousands of people lining up all along the parade route. If you want to have the best experience and actually SEE the costumes, you'll want to arrive at least an hour early and stake out a spot. Otherwise you'll be elbowing for a place behind ten other people and craning your neck for a glimpse. I think I've attended Dragon*Con every year since I moved to Atlanta. It's a great way to spend Labor Day weekend indulging your inner geek and hobnobbing with a diverse group of friendly people who share your obsessions; along with a few obsessions you probably don't share. As great as this country, I have enough sense to realize, no matter how inviting, no matter how inclusive, there are some places where my ass should never be. DragonCon is one of them. I honestly got tricked into going into this whole "thing"....under the guise of some party, we were led to some hotel on Peachtree (the group of ppl that I was with). I came, I saw, and I wanted to leave immediately. It looked like the scene of a bad dream. People all over the place who couldn't wait to show how damn weird people can get on this planet. They achieved. Here's what I can say....ppl there that were involved were having a blast in all their weirdness. And hey, who am i to hate on someone else's good azz time. I went Friday night for people watching and drinking, expecting to just be laughing at nerds and maybe staying around for an hour. Instead, I was almost immediately sad I too did not have a costume. I felt incredibly left out. Fast forward to Saturday: I have returned in my hybrid of some sort of more fashionable Trixie from Speed Racer/The Stig of Top Gear's female cousin attire, and people are taking my picture and even asking for pictures with me. Hell yes. By 10pm I am already planning for next year, you don't even have to actually go to anything that requires having a pass to have a blast. It's more like it's a great big weekend long costume party filled with great people watching plus some cool stuff to see if that's what you're into. And here I was last year pretty glad I was missing out on everything by going to Chicago, ha. While I can surely say there is nothing that would interest me enough to make a pass worthwhile, I absolutely love that I think I have found something that has brought back my costume bug, and I'm psyched to have a year to come up with more! read more

What more is there to be said about Dragon Con? It's a must if you haven't yet been, a must if you're in a fandom - and not just the typical sci-fi/gaming kind - DragonCon is very pleasantly diverse; just take my word for it, Dragon Con is a must, you have to go at least once to experience it all. Yes. It's overwhelming, crowded, hot, exhausting - all of the above and more, but despite it all it manages to be so. much. fun. How? The majority of everyone you meet are just good people, there is an occasional asshole, but there always is. There's just so much to do as well, here are some of the highlights: Without a doubt people watching at it's finest, even the bad costumes are good, driink-drank-drunk - there's a bar everywhere, in addition to the night parties/raves, a dealer's room for swanky merch purchases, a meet-and-greet room (this year we saw Ralph Macchio, half the cast of Angel and BSG, Karl Urban...just to name a few), a game room (mainly board games with a few video games set up). Now, the downside of Dragon Con: the crowds, it's usually tolerable, but there will be times throughout the day/weekend where it's absolutely insufferable - just keep calm, it'll pass. In the same vein...be prepared to wait in lines - for everything: food, bathroom, bar, and especially the panels, which is the worst, there's no guarantee you'll get a seat if you're not in line at least two-three hours before the panel starts. Thus if you go to two panels - it's going to basically be your entire con experience. Also be prepared for a lot of walking. Walking to from MARTA (which I recommend you take, as the traffic is horrific, and the prices for parking are outrageously up-charged for the weekend) and the convention itself is spread out over four hotels (all very close in proximity, however): the Mariott, Hyatt, Sheraton, and the Westin. In conclusion, a few quick tips to make your DragonCon a better one: wear comfortable shoes, come early - especially on Saturday, and especially-especially if you want to be there for the parade, bring your own drank (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), again - take MARTA, bring a camera, bring extra batteries for your phones, and if you're a first-timer, I recommend just buying a one-day pass (Saturday's), as an all-day venture at the con can be fairly draining. The Yelp 2-star stands for "meh, I've had better..." and I have... at HeroesCon in Charlotte, at Wizard World in Long Beach and even at Dragon Con ... circa the 90s. This show has is overgrown, overcrowded, overheated and overpriced. You can barely move through the various aisles and crowd control is an afterthought at best. You will find yourself standing in Disney-World-esque ques (without any of the organization or forethought that goes into that company's parks) and you will smell all sorts of body odor before your time at Dragon"Con" is over. The majority of movie announcements have already happened by the time Dragon"Con" rolls around, so all you get are the tired retreads if you even get those. Marvel and DC comics have not had an official presence at this show for 20 years now. Swag is disappointing. After experiencing some well-organized "cons," I can't support this mess any longer. If you've never been to DragonCon, it's hard to describe it fully. It proudly holds the reputation of being the biggest, most debauched con in the world, and you know what? It's probably true. I was there not FIVE MINUTES when I saw a woman dressed in nothing but pasties, butt floss, and body paint wandering through the hotel lobby. That was just the first five minutes mind you. Most the the costuming there is amazing, and not just the half (or mostly) naked ones. Detailed and fantastically constructed costumes abound in the extreme. The 501st is there in force, of course. You can also see zillions of other amazing creations-- a whole bunch of guys in perfect Gears of War armor; someone sporting astonishingly detailed Master Chief armor, and more things than you could possibly name. There was a whole group there as the Marvel Zombies, and they looked fantastic. The panels are extensive and varied-- something for everyone, for sure. The dealer floor could be bigger, but it was aiight. There were about a zillion celebrity and celebrity-ish people there. I had a drunken conversation with Peter Mayhew in a bar, and a sober conversation with Ron Glass. I peed next to the blue chick from Farscape. She wasn't blue at the time, and no, it was in the women's restroom, not on the table at the Hyatt bar. The only drawback is that it's crowded-- excessively and annoyingly crowded. For a con that spans three major hotels (I hear four next year) you'd think they wouldn't have such an issue with crowding, but it was so intense that they had to shut down one hotel several times because of it. There were serious, hard-to-believe lacks in crowd control and flow management-- like almost no thought had gone into managing the flow of these huge groups of people at all. This was my first DragonCon, and I was told by a number of old timers that years past saw better flow and that the main problem was the construction at one of the hotels, so it may not be an issue in the future. All in all, it was a lot of fun despite the crowding. It was probably the single most debauched event I have ever attended, and for those of you who know me, that is saying a LOT. read more

A very relaxed event where the party goes on 24/7. Sadly, it seems most of the staff partake of the partying & become a bit snappy at times with little in the way of any skills in dealing with people. I am specifically referring to the staff assigned to the panels who were crowd control. In one instance they had rows & rows of chairs lined up & wanted us to walk back & forth through the rows like snakes until we got to the first row instead of simply walking up the side of the room to the first row. They became very upset when we (all of us) decided not to be idiots. Then there were the multiple times I observed they would simply yell & then threaten people. Little clue here folks, don't threaten people...you have nothing to back it up. On the final day, my last panel went long & I had to leave while it was still going in order to make it to the Art Show & pay for everything I had won at the silent & live auction. My timing was perfect as I arrived at 1550 (10 minutes before I was informed earlier that very day they would be closing the doors). The entrance doors were closed & I was not allowed to enter. After several minutes of explaining to the person guarding the door I had items I needed to pay for which I had already won & as the words were forming on my lips to speak to someone higher up, I was allowed in to pay & pick up my phatz. Overall, a very nice event...if the staff improved their attitude it would go a very long way. Personally, I never even heard of anyone getting out of hand at the event & in speaking with the local enforcement personal they also stated they had no problems from anyone during the entire weekend. Dragon Con, on a scale of one to five, for people watching, is a forty-five. As a 12-plus year veteran of the San Diego Comic Con, the largest West Coast comic and pop culture convention, I thought I had seen it all. Until I began drinking at the Marriot that Friday night. The majority of costumes I've been subjected to over the years have ranged from the mildly attractive chicks dressed as any number of comic book vixens or Lara Croft to the dumpiest of the dumpy dudes who crawled out of their basement for a peek at female flesh clad in homemade spandex and rubber costumes, while wearing their favorite cloak and rubber Hobbit feet. It's a barrage of imagery I know, but it's actually accurate, just be glad we can't share the actual smells that usually accompany these shows! Dragon Con however, raised the bar for costumed events to a level even I, as jaded as I am, could do nothing but enjoy. Although the gin and tonics I drank helped too. The attendees really went all out for their costumed shenanigans and I was thoroughly impressed with their enthusiasm as well as the overall physique of the average costumed avenger. My biggest shock was that the chicks wearing electrical tape actually pulled it off without having to try and use body make-up to conceal the bruises and pimples, which has been standard fare at other cons for ages. The people were there to be seen, love having pictures taken of themselves and were lots of fun to walk around and look at. I not only would recommend heading to this con for some quality people watching but I'll be there next year myself, it was too much fun to miss! read more

Ah, DragonCon! What a crazy and fun couple of days. My brother and I geeked out to our heart's content and would gladly recommend it to other nerds, geeks, dorks or the occasional cool person who just happens to be a fan of comic book-based films. You should know a few things before you go, however. First, getting to the panels or sessions that you'd like to attend can involve a fair bit of walking between hotels. Be prepared to be on your feet. A lot. When you're not walking, you're standing in line. A lot. Second, Atlanta is hot and sticky at this time of year. Please, for the love of God - wear deodorant. At one point, I smelled something akin to provolone cheese gone bad, and I assure you that there was no cheese in sight. Third, in line with the second point, you will probably sweat. Possibly a lot. Bring water (or drink the free water that they provide in the hotels), pace yourself, and don't forget to eat. We personally saw two people who passed out and had to be extracted by roving EMTs. We can only guess that dehydration may have played a small role. Fourth, you probably won't get to see everything you want to see, so plan wisely. Study the schedule, and get in line way earlier than you think you have to. Fifth, if you're not good with huge crowds of people, this probably isn't the place for you. We were pretty much done with said huge crowds by the end of Saturday and ready to see what else Hotlanta had to offer. That said, the parade was awesome, the dealers' rooms were awesome, and the art show was, you guessed it -- awesome. Not to mention all the fantastic costumes! Definitely a convention that you have to experience at least once. Oh, and please donate blood while you're there. DISSAPOINTING - Over-sold, under-organized, over-crowded, under-managed, lack of properly sized facilities for the paid events lead to a frustrating first time experience. Now I know to ARRIVE 1 HOUR EARLY for ANY 1/2 DECENT EVENT. So here's the math: Arrive 8:30, wait 1 hour for registration = late for the parade = cant see Arrive 40 min early for Adventure time = leave parade early and STILL miss Adventure time = BS Go to autograph signing after being turned down at Adventure Time, wait 30 minutes in line = miss autographing. Arrive 30 minutes early for Harry Potter and get crammed into a small room Arrive 45 minutes early for Myth Busters, "organizers" shift line to outside = miss show. So, waiting in line nearly 4 hours yielded 1 panel, and an art show. Good thing the attendees were fun. I suggest the World Congress Center next time. read more

If you have thought about it, then go ahead and do it. This year, we were a bit unprepared and opted out of the badges because they can be quite pricey on the day of. The cheapest date is Monday, but by then, I believe that most of the hype has died down and some of the best stuff are long gone. This year, we just grabbed our camera and walked in and around the hotels that hosts it every year. Westin hotel was a bit more friendly since they dont check badges at the entrance if you just want to hang out their lobby. However, all the other hotels are strict strict strict and we decided to just to hang out right outside and around the strict hotels and took pictures of the most interesting characters that happens to walk by. For lunch, we went to the mall which I believe jack up their prices for this time of the year, but it is still cheaper than eating at the restaurants around this area. Another suggestion is for you to take MARTA. Driving will be a nightmare due to the ridiculous amount of pedestrians, parking will be sky high and rare, and you just dont want to deal with any of that. We parked at the Lindbergh station which offers free parking. MARTA now charges $1 as a card fee and $2.50 per one way. A full day all access pass I believe is $10 plus the card fee. I know not all of us Atlantans use MARTA so I thought I should throw that in. The MARTA station is about 2-3 blocks away from Westin, and the other hotels are within a couple of blocks as well. There is a small convenience store around the Westin hotel so take advantage of that. We brought our own water bottles which quickly dwindled, and thank goodness this place was around! So there you have it. If you are interested, book the passes in advance. Get a room in advance which can be pricey if you do not split with a group of people. Utilize MARTA and the small convenience store I mentioned. TAKE A CAMERA and enjoy the colorful characters roaming around who are more than happy to have their pictures taken. This was my second Dragon*Con. While I would like to write a manifesto on just how awesome it is I can't quite get my thoughts together as I'm suffering from Con Crud (a nasty cold that is the result of breathing the same air as 30 - 50, 000 other people for 4 days) and PCD (Post Con Depression). The real world always seems that much more gray after Dragon*Con. I would be much happier if people wore costumes year round. I think Melissa H. did a good job of describing the con, but there's so much more to it. I'm usually wary of large crowds, but love being among the throngs of sci-fi, gamers, goths, furries, geeks, nerds, exhibitionists, anime freaks, whedon freaks, people dressed like Tetris etc... The people watching is amazing as is the vibe of the entire place. Yes, it's over crowded and yes, the Fire Marshall was villainized for doing his/her job, but for the amount of people very few bad things happened. It's a testament to the con producers and goers that the atmosphere across three hotels and surrounding city blocks was filled with such childlike joy. I can't wait till next year. Lemme preface my review by saying that I know nothing about comic books or action heroes. In fact I'm pretty clueless about sci-fi and pop culture in general. But I love me some people watching and I'd heard about DragonCon so I checked out the parade this year. It was so much fun! A few friends and I met up downtown early in the morning to stake out a parade viewing spot. We waited for a couple hours I think, but it was worth it. We had a great location right near the Peachtree Center MARTA stop. My advice for parade-goers: go early, dress for the weather, bring water and patience. If I go again, I might get creative and try to find an viewing spot from one of the parking garages or restaurants. Or I might just show up at 6am with a cooler full of bacon and bloody mary supplies. read more

It started when my plan for Labor day fell through, so I decided to head for Dragon*con, bought the 4 day membership and an awesome time, mingling with like minded folks from all over the world. The following year, again it fell through so here comes Dragon*con, now days I just purchase the membership ahead of time to go to Dragon*con. So many wild costumes, actors and actresses I bump into in the hallway, having a awesome conversation with them at the autograph area. Oh no I don't dress up, I'm one of those people walking around and posing costumers and take photos of them and post them on the internet to share (on 2012 Dragon*con my weekend total was 8,600 photos, I'm still editing them hehehe) I'm almost ready for the 2013 Dragon*con, I already have my membership confirmation card, new lighting equipment for photographing costumers and actors an actress in the Panel. Unfortunately, as for Dragon*con, if you don't have the pass, you can only attend the Parade and also outside on the street and food court at Peachtree center. But if you want the full experience get the membership ahead of time! As for kids goes, it's PG-13 until 6pm, after that it slowly becomes NC-17 (costumers), so if you have young kids, take them home by 6pm. read more

Ha, this is interesting....Dragon*con is on Yelp! I started going to this thing in 2007. I've been every single year since. It's the one thing every year that I look forward to the MOST. Well, I love Halloween also. Dragon*con basically is Halloween, only multiply that by about 10,000,000,000. People are hilarious. Even if you don't get into dressing up or anything pop-culture related (how is that possible?), you can STILL go and have an amazing time. People-watching alone is one of my favorite activities while I'm at the Con, and 99% of people there are glad to take a photo with you. However, if you are into that sort of thing, this is the place for you! Get ready to meet lots of new friends, go to panels, see celebrities, talk about dorkiness, drink A LOT, check out amazing costume contests, laugh, smile more that you ever have, go to dance parties, take lots of pictures, see lots of funny stuff, and have your mind blown by the creativity of others around you. Labor Day weekend every year. Go get your membership for the whole weekend. You won't be disappointed. read more

I just went to this event a week ago for the very 1st time and it was awesome. There is always something to do every day and the con features a lot of celebrities every year. I plan to return here again. I wished some of the elevators worked faster but it's all good. The food court is great too. I loved the dance race's and karaoke too. I would advise get your tickets in advance since they are $80.00 each for all four days or you will spend $160.00. read more

If you like storm troopers in drag, british television, comics, or even video games, then you've probably already heard of DragonCon and know it brings a good time. There are panels that cover every geeky interest out there, from fan-run to your favorite actors and creators. There's even a science panel with NASA scientists, plus a writing panel, a costuming panel (featuring local favorites such as Yaya!), and as of 2012, video gaming panel. Panels not your thing? You can drink. All day. All night. All weekend. You get Labor Day off to recover, so where's the shame in a 4 day binge, right? For the kids, there's the parade which is well-attended so come early for a good spot. There's tons of costumed folks marching and driving in this thing, so chances are you'll recognize some bit of nostalgia in your life. THINGS TO NOTE: They are no longer allow trades of badges - purchases are final to your name only. Take MARTA. Please. Your wallet will thank you for not paying $20-30 a day to park your car at a hotel. Buy a badge early for a better rate - the line issue is fixed so you're actually faster buying ahead of time than at the door now. Expect to have a good time! Bring water... Only went to the parade this year (hiss and boo), but it was great fun. Costumes were great and entertaining. I was near the front where the parade started and next time, I will plan on being further down to allow the participants time to get everything together and get in proper step. Written on Friday, the first day of DragonCon 2014. I've been to DragonCon for the last 7 or 8 years. If I had written this review several years ago, I'd have given it a five star. I used to love it! Entering the Con hotels felt like entering a fairy land, or a dreamy alternative universe. People watching was such a thrilling experience! It still is, but the crowd really gets to me now. Last year it seemed quite crowded on Saturday, and this year it was already super crowded on Friday! The waiting line for Sir Patrick Stewart's panel wrapped around the entire Marriott hotel. I went there 30 minutes ahead of time and the capacity was already filled so I couldn't get in. There was even a long waiting line to enter the dealer's room at American Mall. I'm not sure how bad it would be tomorrow. What I love this year so far: 1. The registration line was very short, there was no waiting at all. 2. Still loving the cosplay, people are so creative! 3. Love the art show. And not too crowded, i.e. I could always move freely through the crowd, and was not stuck in a very slow-moving mass of bodies. Friday is definitely the day to go. 4. Very helpful Con-workers and hotel staff, and city ambassadors. 5. People are so friendly! One tip: The various floor plans, hotels, and where and what might seem overwhelming at first, but there are plenty of information booth around with very competent people, they will surely help you. A FEAST FOR THE EYES !! DragonCon was amazing. On our way back to the hotel from the Georgia Tech game we were excited to see demons, aliens, and other creatures walking down the sidewalk. We actually tracked several demons and fairy's (gamers all dressed up) to determine DragonCon's exact location. The little demon and his group of fairy's headed for Atlanta Marriott Marquis and this was just the beginning. We entered DragonCon for free!! There were thousands of people dressed up in all types of costumes. All the people at DragonCon were more than happy to have their pictures taken. One of the best events we got to witness was a group of ladies all dressed up belly dancing to a rap song. I've never seen belly dancers moving to rap in any science fiction movie, but it did remind me of the Twilight Zone. There were loads of vendors selling all types of science fiction goodies. This is a great event to checkout. I was amazed at how many people were actually at this event. The event took place at several different hotels the Hyatt Regency Atlanta , Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Hilton Atlanta and the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel. You could walk from hotel to hotel for all sort of eye catching events ! read more

Welp. It was my first DragonCon experience and I must say it was all I thought it would be + a lot more. It doesn't surprise me at all there are 12 year in a row veterans going to this event. It has everything your geeky heart desires + a 24 / 7 non stop rave / cosplay party in the mix. The people are super fun & there is literally something to do at all hours of the night. I came outside the hotel for a smoke break at 2am and they literally had a DJ and dance party happening OUTSIDE AT THE HOTEL ENTRANCE! I feel a little bad for the people living in the area though as it really is a madhouse in the best kind of ways. It was amazing! If you're a gamer - make sure to check out the gaming rooms - both board & pc. You will NOT be disappointed! Final Verdict: I hope to be back next year for sure! How amazing! read more

It was my first DragonCon and I was quite amazed at all that was offered for so little cost! We bought our tickets/memberships early and only paid $75 each. For four days of nonstop workshops, the only thing they're missing are Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Not all of the host hotels do well but given they are all connected, what a great gathering! One piece of advice for newbies...don't try to see the big events like Patrick Stewart or TrueBlood. Long lines will be the end of you, along with the heat. Go to the smaller venues and check out science and hackers...that was the best IMHO! read more

I have been coming to DragonCon since 2002 and I have seen lots of changes through the years. Every year, it appeared to get more and more crowded. Honestly, Saturdays were becoming physically unbearable following the parade. Thankfully, this year feels like an improvement. I see a serious upgrade in police security and badge checks. This has minimized parade overflow and helped with crowds significantly. Now we can nerd-out at our favorite con ;-) read more

Oh. My. Now I understand. People had told me it's fun. They had mentioned the people watching, the costumes, the smiles (and the bar). I wasn't in any sort of costume. Did it matter? No! I felt just as welcome and relaxed hanging out as anyone. And the costume wearers were not at all shy about showing off their gear. The costumes ran the gamut from over-the-top steampunk to (ahem) Leeloo's white tape wear. Even if you don't go to the bar or the con, go to the parade. It rocked! Seeing the costumes in full daylight (thankfully not so bright) was great. From what's been passed along, the conference tracks themselves were great. Shatner and Nimoy's exchange over the word "fascinate" is only one soundbite. The fifth star is being held in reserve for next year. I need to budget time & money so I can attend for real rather than as a gawker. I'm betting the mighty fine shindig would have been fun. And I didn't even know there was an Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) track covering the latest events and works regarding freedom in the digital era. (Yeah, now I feel guilty for not helping. erk.) read more

Dragon Con - Gangnam Style - Festivals Near Me - Atlanta, Georgia

DragonCon is uber fun for sci-fi/fantasy/anime/gaming/cosplay/costuming (who else am I missing) geeks. And I say geeks with love. I have had the pleasure of attending DC four times now. Each experience has been different. I learn with each Con. Everyone gets something different out of the experience and is looking for different things. I like to attend the celebrity panels and visit the Walk of Fame (where you can take photos with celebrities and get signatures - for a fee, determined by each celebrity). Always hosted on Labor Day weekend- Friday through Monday. Though unofficial events start on Thursday. There is ALOT of waiting. So be patient. And don't be an ass. There, I said it. Don't save a spot in line for 5 of your friends. That's not cool. It can be really hard to get into the big panels and folks have been waiting. It's not fair. There is plenty of volunteer and paid staff there to help manage the lines, but it doesn't always work out. But most of them are doing the best they can with the numbers they have. A big event is the parade on Saturday morning. Better get there early for good viewing. I've seen it a few times and I am done. I don't like early morning wakeups. The hotel decks will be full from the attendees staying at the hotels so you will need to use one of the lots, take Uber, or take MARTA. Convenient stops are Peachtree Center and Five Points. Great location across four hotels (Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt, and Hilton) and America's Mart (for the artist market and vendors). Convenient connections to Peachtree Center and other dining options. Many will stay open late for this weekend. Great people watching. For those that love cosplay, cosplay to your heart's delight. But remember...no costume is no costume. This is my first dragoncon and it is awesome. If you love anything nerdy, scifi, superhero, comics, anime, medieval, gaming, or anything related you will love this place. There are tons of people in cosplay and everyone is friendly toward fellow nerds. It was also completely awesome to run into the cast of the scifi series "Lost Girl" while grabbing a slice of pizza How cool is that? read more

My favorite time of year! I always joke with my rabbi that Dragon Con is the kick-off to the High Holidays, that's how much it means to me.

Although I didn't get to go this year, I always love this weekend in Atlanta! It's so much fun to walk around downtown and see random situations that would look funny regularly. Everyone is taking pictures and there is a lot of creativity. You can tell a lot of people go out and put a lot of energy in their costumes and for some people it is the only weekend they can be their geeky nerdy selves without judgement. The parade is super awesome too. If you haven't checked out anything Dragon-Con related, I would highly recommend going downtown tomorrow (Sunday, August 31) near the Westin/Suntrust and just walk around and see what fun adventures you can get into! read more
