Beware of The Nashville Handyman - Unlicensed and Costly Mistakes…read moreI hired The Nashville Handyman, owned by Chad Weideman, expecting professional service, but instead, I ended up with severe property damage and thousands of dollars in unexpected repairs. His crew used a mechanical trenching machine that broke my sewer line, and rather than informing me, they covered it up with bricks, gravel, and dirt, leading to major plumbing failures over time. Upon further investigation, I discovered that The Nashville Handyman is not licensed to perform this type of work, which is illegal in Tennessee under T.C.A. § 62-6-503. The law states that unlicensed contractors may be held liable for treble damages--triple the actual repair costs. Even after being presented with undeniable evidence, they refused to fully take responsibility for the damages they caused. If you care about your home and finances, avoid this company. Always hire a licensed and reputable contractor instead.

Go back to Yelp and find a new handyman. This time, I found Randy Armstrong. Randy's fantastic. He has history in this town wrt music and construction and knows a thing or two about a thing or two. Randy responded to my inquiries quickly and with a lot of detail. I had a variety of things I needed help with and he never so much as batted an eye. His (hourly) rates are extremely competitive and, I discovered, he doesn't run the clock. He's honest, skilled, thorough, and stands by his word and work. He's also incredibly easy to talk to. Having him in my house (for many hours at a time; I told you I had a ton of things I needed done) was a joy. We talked about everything: music, the music business, traffic, construction, neighborhoods, the best routes to get from a to b, etc. I am sure that at times he was, like, 'I wish this guy would shut up' but he never indicated any annoyance at my prattling on. Did I mention that he's fast? Despite spending a few hours at a time to get things done (reflective of my list rather than his time management), I marveled at the fact that he was able to accomplish so much and to do it well. Rather than run the clock for busy work, he suggested I do a few things to expedite what he needed to get done. He could have taken the easy way out and charged me for work that was a.) easy and b.) I could have done myself but he chose to be straight with me and let me know where I was bleeding time and money. He didn't have to do that but he did. And it's that kind of honesty that will keep me hiring him again and again and recommending him/his work to anyone who has projects around the house with which they need help. FWIW, he doesn't do lawn care.

It's a yes on your schedule, it's a yes on price and it's a yes on ability. That feeling is like discovering somehow that Marvel was right, superheros exist and they really are there to help you live through the day. Randy took our simple installation request and breezed through it - was direct if he had any questions and called back immediately when he saw that he just missed a call - I've still got message un-responded to out there with some of the other handymen I'd contacted. I'm not sure the address, but I know Randy works in Nashville and is incredible reasonable with hours and great with contact. In any project when the stress piles up, these are pretty much the best qualities in the world - so much appreciation for his work and it looks great, too!
