Let's start by saying I had a really rotten 2016. I quit my job in late 2015 to join a startup in 2016, and it didn't materialize. I was able to work part time, but the stress was really bad. Then, when I thought things could not get worse, my wife said she wanted a divorce, and I discovered she was having an affair. It is not an understatement when I say that 2016 was the worst year of my life (and I'm 49 so I had a lot to compare it to). I was not in a good place to say the least. I don't know if it was fate or a major stroke of luck, but I read about Dr. Sam on Yelp .... I can truly say that without Dr Sam's guidance, insight, and humanity, I might still be adrift at sea, or worse. The first session, I was surprised when she gave me a shopping list of supplements that she recommended I take (I was not sleeping more than 3 hours a night, nor was I eating much). Her concern with taking care of her patients' physical condition, as well as their state of mind, is such a smart and insightful approach. From a mental point of view, Dr Sam asks great questions, and does not just hold your hand - she makes you think, and work, and gives you tools and insights to heal yourself. Meditation, mindfulness, breathing, dealing with your negative emotions - she brings it all to the table. I think what struck me the most was that she 'read' me very well - and tailored her approach to maximize results based on my personality. More specifically, she saw that I am very goal oriented - meaning that I wanted to move on and heal quickly. Because of this, she emphasized that I could not rush the grieving process, and I could not suppress my feelings and emotions, just because I wanted to reach my goal quickly - and if I moved too quickly, I would not have properly dealt with what I was feeling, and it would potentially have negative future ramifications. It was an incredible insight by her. Dr Sam was not all hearts and flowers - she asks some tough questions, and holds you to task (albeit in a very kind manner). She comes up with some great analogies* to help illustrate certain situations, which is incredibly helpful and has really driven certain points home. I had kept journals when my marriage was unraveling. I recently re-read them, and the words are those of a stranger, of someone who I could not recognize. While I am not going to give Dr Sam all of the credit, because I did work hard to heal, I will honestly say that I don't know if I could have gotten through this without her. Or more accurately, gotten through it by becoming a better person - a better worker, better father, better future partner to someone else. And those are the gifts I got from Dr Sam. The gift of insight. The gift of guidance. The gift of personal growth. The gift of learning from an event that caused me great pain. So all I can say is that if you are hurting, or in need of someone to talk with from a mental health point of view, you should make it a point to see Dr Sam. I have been a patient of Dr. Sam's for the last few years. I cannot say enough about how Dr. Sam makes you feel as if you are talking to a dear friend - if that dear friend was 100% unbiased, brimming with unconditional love, and one of the most knowledgeable, intelligent people in the world! It is near to impossible to find these traits in one doctor - as the smart ones usually come off as uncaring. As a physician myself, I have seen this first hand in many of my colleagues. In a session with Dr. Sam, she gets right to the point. Her style is upbeat and witty, and yet extremely empathetic. While she will genuinely listen to your issues and make you feel "heard," she is focused on finding solutions to the problem. Perhaps Dr. Sam's most unique attribute is her ability to "think outside the box." In a field where the norm is to talk about the past for years or quickly turn to medication, Dr. Sam uses her knowledge of medicine to suggest alternative reasons for your symptoms that you can discuss with your physician. In my case, several physicians had ruled out physical reasons for my depression for years. After just a few sessions, Dr. Sam indicated that she thought thyroid issues might be the cause of my symptoms. I was resistant to her diagnosis because my lab test results were normal. I regret that it took months for me to get additional testing because Dr. Sam was 100% correct. After some time on thyroid medication, my symptoms improved dramatically. Dr. Sam is down to earth, extremely approachable and funny. I don't easily open up, but the comfortable and warm environment she created made it very easy for me to talk to her. Sam steered me through a very difficult phase of my life by teaching me different ways of thinking and approaching situations. The "homework" given from one session to report back on at the next session was also extremely helpful. Skype sessions really came in handy when I moved from NJ to NYC. The only reason my rating is not 5 stars is because her practice does not take insurance. Although I would not say that I enjoyed counseling, I enjoyed working with Dr. Von Reiche immensely. I saw Sam both individually and in couples counseling with my husband. I found Sam to be extremely warm and caring. While working with her it is apparent that she is passionate about helping people. I like her philosophy that you should not need to be in counseling indefinitely.
