I got referred out to Dr. Buehler from my dermatologist. I will admit, I didn't know what to expect based on reviews. I got told I had to have my thumb "drained" which means they rip your nail off and cut into your thumb in a couple places to allow the infection to drain out. He told me that it would be about 10 minutes in the office with local anesthetics. I was terrified because I had already seen the dermatologist to get my thumb cultured and the anesthetics hardly worked and was extremely painful, since local anesthetics do not work as well when there is infection. I asked if I could do it under general anesthesia and he told me I could but that it wasn't wise to leave the infection in there longer and explained how much more expensive it would be to do it that way. He seemed pretty cold and firm at first, but gave me a lot of time to call my insurance and make a decision while he saw other patients. Because he was firm in his statements, I made the decision to get it done in the office, which was the right choice. It didn't hurt at all after the anesthetics were injected and he talked to me through the whole process. I didn't feel rushed, even though his office is very busy, or uncared about. Though I can see how people could misunderstand his personality at first, I fully believe he cares about his job and his patients. His staff are also wonderful. They remembered me when I came in for follow up appointments and expressed concern with how I was doing. And they've also been dealing with Washington Workers Comp even though they don't normally accept patients going through WA workers comp because of how complicated the billing is between the two states. read more

I had an awful experience with this provider. I got a ganglion cyst and my PCP referred me to this doctor. I called and made an appointment, fully explaining the reasons for it. A few weeks later I showed up to my appointment. I waited 45 minutes beyond my scheduled appointment time and then I was taken back to the exam room. Dr. Buehler comes in and without even so much as a greeting, he told me that he doesn't treat ganglion cysts. Okay fine, but it would have been nice if the receptionists or someone along the line of communication would have found some way to communicate this to me as to not waste my time and money. I'm pretty sure they don't care much about their patients. When I called to talk about the bill I received, the lady in the billing department was so rude to me. Since he didn't actually examine me or talk to me, I figured that was that and I couldn't possibly be charged to NOT be seen, right? NOPE. My portion of the bill after insurance was 130 bucks. So this guy got paid to say that he won't treat me without even so much as examining me. He didn't look at my hand or ask me any questions and made hundreds of dollars for a less than 20 second interaction. So dishonest. I advise you go elsewhere. read more

So, I have suffered a few injuries in my time. Some from sheer clumsyness, some due to hobbies that tend towards the "high risk" end of the spectrum. So I know the world of orthopedic docs fairly well, and I know when one is completely disinterested and falls short of even being called "average". I was referred to Dr Buehler following a cage fighting injury to my hand. He talked to me for less than 5 minutes, did not review or take new x-rays, and blew me off with this medieval torture device of a "brace" that made my hand hurt as bad as it did the day following the initial injury. I don't think it was incompetence, I am pretty convinced he was more interested in shuffling me through in minimal time. Not to mention I am sure he didn't take me seriously as an athlete. He did take plenty of interest in the guy in the room next to me and the gout in the man's finger and how surgery could impact his golf game. Incidentally, 2 days later I drove all the way across town to see my old ortho doc to get a 2nd opinion. He checked my xrays, ordered new ones, and Im damn glad he did. Im now in a cast, but Im sure my recovery time will be much shorter with the appropriate treatment. read more

My physician referred me to Dr. Buehler after I came in complaining of pain and swelling in my wrist. We suspected a ganglion cyst, and thought I would need surgery. The day of my appointment, I happened to read several really bad reviews of Dr. Buehler, mostly citing a lack of bedside manner. It made me rather nervous, to tell the truth, but my wrist was really bothering me and I had the appointment, so I went. I had a very good visit with Dr. Buehler, so I want to give counterbalance to some of these poor reviews. Dr. Buehler seemed perfectly nice to me. He looked at my wrist and told me it was not a ganglion cyst, but said that he wanted to see some X-rays to rule out any underlying issues. A very friendly X-ray technician took some films of my wrist there in the office. In a very short time, Dr. Buehler came and looked at my x-rays, and said it was tendinitis, with nothing else unusual going on. He told me some warning signs to look for and seemed like he was going to send me on my way. I told him the wrist had recently gotten more swollen and was really bothering me, even waking me up at night lately. He said if that was the case, he could give me a cortisone injection to relieve the inflammation/pain. As he was readying the injection, I told him that it was possible I may faint but that if I could stay distracted from the injection, I wouldn't have any trouble. So he engaged me in a lively conversation about my work and my studies (I'm a grad student). The injection went just fine, and my wrist is considerably better. I found Dr. Buehler to be quite nice. Busy, yes, but attentive during my time with him. And he addressed my issue. I would definitely see him again for hand or wrist issues. read more

I would recommend Dr Marc Buehler in a heart beat. He was the surgeon who plated and pinned my radius (the ulna was also broken) after a bad fall off my bike. He was attentive, factual and not at all arrogant. I work with my hands for a living and I recovered with full use. I have seen others w/the same surgery scar that is not at all as clean and precise. What impressed me the most was that he has a physical therapist in his office I saw immediately after he removed my cast so that I could receive PT right away. And he wanted me out of the cast and into a removable splint sooner than other MD's might have so that my muscles wouldn't atrophy and I could work on my range of motion in order to get my flexibility back. read more

Dr. Buehler is a great doctor but I think some people interpret his actions as uncaring or rushed. I feel he just has a "matter of fact" attitude and doesn't want to take excessive time to get you healed quickly. I believe he has a system in place at his office and surgery facility to help expedite the process but I never felt like part of a "cattle call" My injury happened during his scheduled surgery days but he and staff made an extra effort to get me in ASAP for my first meeting. Two days later I was in surgery. 10 days after that - I was surprised that he was already removing my partial cast and splint. I immediately saw a physical therapist in his office after my splint was removed. After which, I was to only use a removable splint, and only part-time. When I was a kid - if you broke something, as I did my other wrist - what they did then was throw you in a cast, then saw'd it off 2 to 3 months later - and you were on your way. Obviously, treatment now for me as an adult is different, but if you'd apply that old method of treatment and recovery, along with atrophy - it ends up being much longer & more painful and definitely much more ITCHY! I think people who have marked lower ratings here may not be used to Dr. Buehler's style of treatment. I wasn't used to it and at one point I wouldI certainly consider myself one of those who felt my surgery, treatment and therapy may have seemed a little rushed or unorthodox. But now less than a week into therapy, and talking with friends, colleagues, and medical staff elsewhere, they and I find my progress surreal but encouraging, and I believe it can be attributed to Dr. Bueller's no-nonsense attitude towards treatment and healing. But really, think about it. Less than 26 days ago I shattered my wrist, requiring 12 screws and a titanium plate and although it's really stiff and I still have a lot of therapy ahead and wear a splint while sleeping and and when out (help protect my wrist) but I can hold a cup of coffee and type this post. Furthermore, his office staff are friendly and polite and his surgery staff was also incredible. I was also able to meet with Jack, the heads surgery nurse and his anesthesiologist, Dr. Berry who both introduced themselves, checked on me, and went over things before the surgery. Dr. Buehler even personally took an after hours call I made regarding a concern. I heard from a relative who had a different local orthopedic surgeon just a couple years ago and they described a much different experience. Albeit Dr. Buehler may not coddle and dote over you, but remember, he's a matter-of-fact kind of guy. During my entire experience this far - I've felt Dr. Buehler has been very attentive, caring and concerned towards my healing and recovery. read more

Dr. Buehler treats my boyfriend on a recurring basis for carpal tunnel and he also treated my son for a surgical tendon repair after cutting his palm open on a knife. Dr. Buehler is only 1 of 4 hand surgeons in PDX so he is busy. Don't expect a lot of hand holding (sorry, I love puns) but he will fix you. He knows what he is doing and my son has full use of his hand again. Love this doc. One of the best and we are lucky to have him. read more

Rushed. Zero compassion. Will make you feel minuscule and acts like your injury is annoying and inconvenient to him. NEVER in my life encountered anyone in the health care industry like it. There are other providers in his same building who do a five star job. And if you need a splint, they don't do them. He will send you into a different room and the people who do them are a different company who may or may not accept your insurance. Please go downstairs and see a different provider and save yourself the tears of visiting this horrible man. read more

I got 5-10 min with him. Cant say my concerns were even acknowledged. Since this was a second doctor I have seen for this I know that greater care could have taken. Pretty sure I was written off because my issue didn't require surgery which is where the big bucks are made. The staff was friendly though. read more

Dr Buehler is a wonderful doctor and hand specialist. I went to see him for strained ligaments; my husband visited for same a few years later. I was most impressed that he has exceptional understanding of hand physiology. Just using his hands to feel, he was able to find the source of my pain, diagnose the problem, and provide an injection on the spot that cured the problem. I walked out of the office pain free (after having endured 5 months of inactivity due to the pain). It's been 6 years and I still have no recurrence. Same results for my husband and his problem. I found Dr. Buehler easy to talk with, and we discussed how med. schools today don't teach adequate physiology; instead, x-rays, machines and tests are more often used to diagnose. This makes health care lots more expensive, I believe. I just visited this page to make sure he's still practicing, as a friend of mine needs his help as her doctor advised surgery for her. My husband has been under Dr. Buehler's care and as I read the other reviews here I have to say his care was excellent. He introduced himself, shook our hands and proceeded to ask my husband what his symptoms are. He gladly answered all of our questions. Dr. Buehler is not one to beat around the bush or sit and hold your hand for hours. He lets you know what's wrong and how he can help you fix it. He was personable, kind and honest. Was glad to have the straight forward, matter-of-fact attitude. His staff are very nice too. They checked on my husband every step of the way in pre-op and explained everything in detail. He's an excellent surgeon. My husbands Carpal tunnel surgery was done in less than a half an hour! The only reason for the 4 stars was the scheduling screw up that made my husband wait for 3 hours after his scheduled time (9:00 am) to get to the surgery. Apparently someone was late for their appointment so that just domino'ed all the rest of Dr. Buehler's surgeries for the day. Other than that it was great. Give him the benefit of the doubt. You'll be glad you did. read more

Dr. Buehler is a great doctor. He gave me an injection that has helped my carpal tunnel symptoms greatly. His staff is wonderful!

Condescending and incorrect. Left feeling much worse after he squeezed my hand and told me that my previous diagnosis was wrong, just because I didn't say 'ouch', even though the previous diagnosis was three months ago and it had gotten a bit better. At the end he barks at me: "So what's the diagnosis?' Twice. Made me very uncomfortable, as I had sort of thought that was his job. Have since been told by a friend in med school that ortho surgeons are notorious for being a-holes, so i guess that's his excuse. read more

Excellent surgeon. It was an honor to have been treated by such an experienced, skilled, and renowned hand surgeon. His confidence in pinning my fractured wrist was amazing. I'm pretty sensitive to mean people and would absolutely state the facts if I felt he was cold or rude. That was not my experience at all. I was very happy with my care and just today got cleared to return to all my normal activities! The only thing I would have liked was more information on what to expect (timeline for healing, etc.). Dr Buehler neglected to come to the hospital when called at home by a nurse. As a result I'm scheduled for my 14th surgery.

Doctor has extremely poor people skills, & a disorganized office.

It is clear these are not real reviews he is good at what he does yes but he does not care about the people he is working on one comment he made to my wife says it all "if you stay in the hospital you will wreck my vacation" he just wants to collect his money and that is it. read more

I was very pleased with my visit with Dr. Buehler. After suffering for 1 yr with hand/wrist pain and having seen a couple of other Dr.s. It was a wonderful to have a Dr. take a proactive approach and try to find out the problem. His staff was very pleasant. I felt he was very knowledgeable about his focus and that is what I am there for. He gave me the opportunity to ask any questions that had not been discussed during the visit. I saw Dr. Buehler for a deep puncture cat bite to the index finger on my right hand. He and his nurse treated me with indifference. I was quite concerned and upset because I am right handed and I had a lot of pain and swelling and difficulty using my right hand. I called and went in several times because it was not getting better. I had a lot of questions and was concerned there might be tissue and tendon damage. He was very short with me. I said it was still red and swollen and painful. I asked him why I was having all these symptoms if there was nothing wrong with it other than arthritis, as he claimed. He said that it was not red, although everyone else including the MRI tech said it was, that it was not swollen, but enlarged, and that pain is not quantifiable. He said it would never get better and there was nothing else I could do. I was very shocked and upset to hear this. He gave me no reassurance whatsoever and no further suggestions. With every question I asked he became more annoyed. He told me to get a second opinion. I asked if he knew anyone and he said to take out the phone book. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. read more
