Downtown Ocala and especially the "Square" is such a special place. There's always some kind of event on the weekend and during the weekdays is bustling mostly with professionals. At night it's the happening spot for dining, fun, meeting up and having a few drinks.
The Square itself is significant mostly for historical reasons. Our first courthouse was built on the Square in 1851. Several others were built on the same site since then and in 1965 the last courthouse at on the Square was demolished. When the lot was deeded to Ocala this was the city's first property as well as 1,000 yards of property in each direction of the Square (in 1883 it was increased to 1 mile). The public hall, church services & a theater was also held in the first courthouse. Ocala's very first businesses were built around the Square and comprised mostly of mercantile, general stores, farriers and markets. Considering it was Ocala's only commercial center it was also the social center. Anything you wanted to know could be heard here. The earliest homes were built a few blocks south of the Square and some still stand.
Fast forward to the 21st century and the Square is a wonderful public park with beautiful old trees, a gazebo for entertainment, a cleared area in front of it for dancing and benches for relaxing. Businesses still surround the Square in downtown Ocala but now they continue for many mles in every direction.
I can only imagine what the next 165 years will bring to downtown Ocala!! read more
