MUCH. BETTER. If only I had gone in earlier. I love that Juniper Family Health also has other members on staff to contribute to your care, including a great nutritionist and another doctor who helped me get vitamins through an IV drip for the last four weeks. I feel very well cared for, and I always feel like the staff listens and pays a great deal of attention to my health concerns. They have really tried hard to make it as cheerful as possible. It's full of really nice upbeat colors, and they have tired hard to make the place not look like a depressing hospital, well as much as you can. The place is full of volunteers offering everyone juice, coffee, tea, water, animal volunteers go around with dogs and some times cats to all of the patients in the waiting rooms to cheer them up, the waiting rooms have cool games you can play with your family or as my family did, we got the entire waiting room in on our game. They have an amazing cafeteria serving high quality, local foods (gone are the old days prison food like cafeterias) and the gift shop is pretty amazing. Immediate is defined as "occurring, acting, or accomplished without loss or interval of time." As Americans, we got to experience "Universal Healthcare". I brought my wife here while traveling in Victoria, BC while on holiday. She fell and was bleeding from the head. One look at her wound, I knew she needed stitches. Locals told us that the Royal Jubilee Hospital was the closest ER. We arrived at about 5PM to a full waiting room. Their website said the "wait time" to be seen was 7 hours and 30 minutes. They had all kinds of people waiting for "emergency treatment". I observed 5 people bleeding, including my wife. There were a few who had shortness of breath. A few who returned 2 days in a row because the ER couldn't take them the day before. There were also a few who seemed to have "anxiety issues". One guy even came in because of a toothache. The waiting room was a great place for socialization as most people waited so long that their cell phone died. Almost everyone in the waiting room were forced to talk to one another, except the 2 females with anxiety issues who needed their phones charged frequently by the ER staff. I met some good people in that waiting room thanks to my phone dying. The waiting was horrible even though we were able to meet some wonderful people. I don't understand the long wait. The people working there were great, which makes me confused even more as to why the long wait times for a hospital emergency room. Nothing seemed to be a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention. My wife and I had some good interactions with the nurses, doctors and techs at the hospital. They made her stay the night and discharged her the next morning (17 hours). She officially stayed longer at the hospital than at our hotel or any of Victoria's tourist attractions. As an Emergency Room that is supposed to treat medical emergencies in a timely fashion, they fail. 6-7 hours of waiting just to be seen is ridiculous. As mentioned, the staff I interacted with were very good people. I took my wife to the ER in the USA for a follow-up, it took about an hour to be seen. We were out within four hours. If this is universal healthcare, we don't need it in the USA.

It was bad enough I had to cut back on dog walks (out Doodle was not happy with this). Reviewing the medical literature I found out there was a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of my condition. After multiple phone calls to clinics offering dermal fillers (mostly for cosmetic procedures) I found the practice of Dr. Anna Sylwestrowicz, MD . The office was very accommodating with my unique inquiry and agreed to meet with me just to discuss my diagnosis and treatment plan. One of the most vital requirements for a good medical outcome is a solid 'Doctor-Patient' relationship that starts with an open and frank discussion. I found my conversation with Dr. Anna (as she prefers to be addressed) to be all a patient could ask for. We jointly came up with a plan, discussed the various dermal fillers on the market, her experience with their use, possible outcomes and hoped for outcomes. I agreed to the procedure. Three weeks before the start of my hike, Dr. Anna injected my left heel pad with dermal filler. The procedure itself was tolerable and I walk out of the office with an order to 'take it easy' with my walking. For the first 5-6 days I was sore at the injection site but that was too be expected. After a week, I restarted my daily dog walks (much to the pleasure of our Doodle) and gradually increased my mileage. On April 23rd, 2026 I found my self hiking south on the Appalachian Trail from the small village of Damascus, Virginia. I was planned on keeping my daily mileage under 20km while carrying 15kg of pack. At that point, my heel was pain free. I hiked for a month pain free. I ended this section of the Trail in the very tourist town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This was a distance of 400km-pain free! Considering the pain, I was in prior to the injection of dermal filler this was a remarkable medical outcome. I am very, very pleased. As for the future, there are 333km left for me to complete. I saw Dr Paul Winston, Physiatrist, at Shelbourne Physiotherapy for a consultation about my nervous…read moresystem. I was interviewed by a medical student who discussed my history with Dr Winston. Dr Winston proceeded to inject my trigeminal nerve with a freezing agent without discussing it with me other than a cursory few comments. He had the syringe ready before he even saw me based on his student's interpretation of my history. This was not informed consent, which I didn't have. In 1980, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled, in the landmark case of Reibl v. Hughes, that patients should be told what the doctor intends to do, as well as what the significant material risks are, and anything else that a reasonable person in that patient's condition would want to be told. I suffered extreme pain and permanent damage to my nerve and temporal mandibular joint. Beware of Dr Winston and Shelbourne Physiotherapy for their association with a doctor who doesn't believe in informed consent. This was the worst medical trauma I've ever experienced.
