Downtown cuts has been downtown Hollywood for a while. And yet I never stopped in as I already had a barber shop and trying new ones can make a guy nervous. But today my guy was off and I felt due for a cut. I stopped in this morn as they opened, 9 sharp. It's a cozy shop. It has a small town old school vibe that can be appreciated. The fella there has a couple years on him which actually gives a trusting vibe to a new barber. I got in the chair pretty quick and we schmoozed it up a bit. After some give and take of how I like my hair, Dewey as I learned him to be named, asked if I was ex-military too. When I said I was retired Army he lightened up and asked me plenty of questions about my service. And meanwhile I learned about his. He had been on the Fiske kennedy Boat in the Korean War. In the end I walked out with pretty good haircut. It wasn't a shape up or fade but he said if I need that next time the other barber does that. There are big shops with lots of barbers where you pay a lot for an OK haircut from someone you have never seen before and probably never will. There are shops where language is a problem and you may walk out with an unwanted crew cut. I tried one place that trimmed my beard down to just a thin jawline strap. It was not what I wanted or asked for. One day I happened to catch a review of Downtown Cuts in the local newspaper and decided to give them a try. I am so glad I did. I love this place!! My son always comes out looking so fresh and so clean, I usually have to drag him to get a hair cut but I've noticed since he started coming here it's less of a battle. I'm from NY so I usually have higher expectations when it comes to my sons barber, everyone that I've taken him to in the past just always got it WRONG! I stumbled upon this place through yelp and decided to check it out based on the other positive reviews. Phil cut my sons hair right before my wedding back in November and did an amazing job, he then later returned and Phil's son Sam did a really cool blowout. They are extremely professional and take time to do the job right, it is so refreshing to be able to send my son to get a haircut and not worry about having his hairline pushed back or worst getting an infection from unsanitary tools. The shop is in a good spot and easy to get to. $20 per cut is steep compared to the other places in the area. Most shops are in the $16-$18 range. My cut was okay but not great, their #2 is much longer than I have experienced in the past. My hair is short on top in the back and long up top in the front. One and done for me. I will look elsewhere in the future. read more
