We spent a rather wet week here in August 2008; our first camping trip with our kids (5 and 7) in a used tent we bought off eBay.
Despite the poor weather, this site was perfect as a secluded getaway.
It is nicely wooded, and there's a kids play area with ropes hanging off the trees. It only has 29 pitches about 50:50 for tents and campervans so you have the following immediate benefits :
a) all amenties are close to your tent
b) it's really quiet
c) you can let your kids wander about knowing
that they're always within earshot
Perhaps I shouldn't really be writing this as the secret could quickly get out, however it is already featured in a book called 'Cool Camping' so what the hell.
The pitches are all flat and well-enough drained. There's gravel about 4 below the turf, so you'll need a hammer for your pegs.
The facilities are kept clean, the showers very good and there's adequate provision for washing up, throwing away your rubbish and there's a fridge where you can freeze ice packs.
The site has a small shop with basics, but there's a Co-Op nearby and Monmouth is 15 minutes away and has everything else you could need.
The manager's live on-site so help is always at hand; they even kindly charged up the kids games console.
The site is up a steep hill, via narrow road, so I'd not like to try getting to it with a caravan - I'd suggest campervans (nothing too long / wide) and tents only. read more
