Chapel Cottage is a lovely little cottage in the middle of the Forest of Dean. We had the pleasure of staying here for five nights in December and it was certainly a cosy retreat from the rest of the world.
It's a fairly small cottage (sleeps 3) but has everything you need for a self catering holiday. The decour is fresh and modern and the old fashioned touches, such as the fire place and the exposed brick, are delightful. The linen, towels and furnishings were new and clean, and the kitchen was fully equipped for home cooking. We certainly made full use of the fire, having it burning every night with the plentiful supply of logs that were available. Even without the fire, it's a warm cottage with central heating. The only area that was a bit chilly was the large conservatory, which unfortunately meant that we couldn't use the big dining table, although I imagine this would be a great space in the summer months.
On arrival we found a freshly baked cake (which I have since obtained the recipe for!), eggs fresh from the owner's chickens, milk and wine. There was even a jar of dog biscuits for those who were bringing furry friends! It's touches like this that really make you fall in love with a place and want to return again and again.
The location is perfect if you like walking as the Forrest of Dean is literally on your doorstep. Unfortunately, there is very little else in Ellwood so don't come here if you like the convenience of a local shop and pub.
The rates are particularly pleasing in the winter, and you can often book for part of the week on request.
Overall, a lovely stay, and we will definitely be back for another winter escape. read more
