This review is for Lauren Guarrasi. Lauren was essential to my birth. I could not have done it without her. She's warm, kind, and meets you where you are - whether you're a natural mama, an epidural mama, or a C-section mama. My goal was to go unmedicated as long as possible, and to have labor inducer naturally as much as possible. Because of my gestational diabetes diagnosis we had to get induced before labor naturally started, but Lauren was ready every step of the way. She provided very early on stretches to try, comfort measures for us to be familiar with, and resources to check out. Lauren was available and supportive by text whenever I had questions or just wanted to vent to someone. But the most important and crucial part for me was how she showed up for me on the day of labor and delivery. I knew I wanted a doula because I wanted someone who would be my coach when I needed it, cheerleader when I needed one, and hypnobirth guru. Because our labor ended up fast, her skills in hypnobirth coaching were essential to our success. Going unmedicated is not easy, but without an incredible doula to help guide breath, give mantras, coaching the whole time, I simply don't think I could have done it. I knew very early in my pregnancy that I wanted a doula as I am not partnered and would need a support person at the birth, especially since this would be my first hospital birth. I wanted someone to be able to advocate for me or remind me and the providers of my birth preferences. After telling doula love what I was looking for in a doula, I was given different profiles of doulas and ended up interviewing Catheryn Apsey. She met all my points on my wishlist, so I ended up choosing her as my doula without even interviewing anyone else.Over the course of my pregnancy, Catheryn met with me several times, to talk about my vision and preferences for this birth, about comfort measures and also ways to encourage an easier labor (for example exercises or positions to help baby engage in the pelvis). I was able to text her any time with updates, questions or concerns and she would respond with support, both emotional and instrumental/ educational. She also has a wealth of resources for other birth related providers, such as chiropractic care/ acupuncture and so on. When it looked like I might "have to" get induced, she helped me cope with the stress and offered to adjust the birth plan to still get an experience I would be comfortable with.Luckily, I went into labor spontaneously. Catheryn was at the hospital right as I got there, provided important emotional and physical support throughout the birth and stayed until I was transferred to recovery (though she offered to stay there too). I'm so grateful for her. I felt comfortable with her despite it being such an intimate and vulnerable experience and I 100% trust her. She is reliable, empathetic, knowledgeable, supportive... everything you could wish for in a doula. I highly recommend doula love's matching service and recommend Catheryn in particular. I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with Doula Love. Our doula, Shontee, has been our rock through the perinatal process - pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I don't even know where to start this review! Sage was the best thing to happen to our family... now some back story!!! My husband and I moved to Portland only 10months before falling pregnant with our second son. I was very nervous because we don't have a huge support system here yet and what family we do have in the area would be dedicated to taking care of our toddler. I knew because of my previous pregnancy and delivery complications that I would have to be induced at 39 weeks and when I was about 25 weeks I started to panic. I knew I wanted more in hospital support the second time around but didn't think I could afford a doula. After some research I found Doula Love and saw that they offered a student doula service on a sliding scale! After filling out a super easy application we were approved and matched with two doula students! Sage was the first one to reach out and after a short zoom meeting I was immediately comfortable and knew that she was the one for our family! A few weeks later we had an in person meeting where she totally let me go on and on about my birth plan and helped me figure out how to communicate and prioritize my feelings! She also helped me think of some postpartum plans because at that point my brain was mush! After being induced Sage arrived when I was in active labor and was there to help me keep calm and breathe through contractions, she had a timer, got the lights down low and put up wonderful fairy lights to really keep everyone peaceful. Although some of my initial plans changed(decided to get an epidural) she was there ready to roll with the punches and was there just for me! I honestly could go on and on about all the things Sage did for me, from calming me because I was scared and nervous about delivering a huge baby to helping me with postpartum care and baby wearing I'll never be able to say enough amazing things! read more

At the 36 week mark we decided to terminate our contract. Our doula was Tisha West. Our first initial meetings were great and we really felt like we were in good hands. Until things got complicated. Our doctor advised induction at 35 weeks due to gestational hypertension. As we entered the hospital and into the evening we communicated via text with Tisha. She told us that inductions take a long time and she would only show up as things get going or about 5 hours into active labor. As the medical situation continued to evolve she actually told us to get some rest as she need some rest too. We were incredulous that the doula that we thought were going to support us was actually going to bed. The entire evening as we updated her it felt like we had to manage her experience rather than the other way around. As our medical situation progress to more dangerous territory; failed inductions, stressed baby, painful contractions under one minute for an hour, keeping up texting/updating the doula just became impossible. 24 hours into being in the hospital we were shocked that she didn't even bother to show up to assess the situation herself but instead just relied on my drug induced sporadic texts. What did we pay for? We were all in disbelief. What tipped us off was an off handed comment about finding a big block of time to travel to us for our in-home visit. Apparently we lived a fair distance (we're just in NW Portland) from her. Was distance a factor in her not showing up to check in on her client who was actively in a medical situation that required support? At the end of the day the nurses and doctors that we had at Good Sam and Emmanuel/Randall were amazing resources for pain management, what to expect during delivery and postpartum support. By the time we were going home with our baby we had a brief moment of contacting Tisha for postpartum support. But thought better of it. read more

Shontee was an amazing Doula! We were conflicted about getting a Doula but it was the best decision we could've made. She provided incredible support to us prior to the birth of our daughter and helped us understand what to expect. During the birth she helped advocate to make sure my partners and I's wishes were being honored. She reassured us throughout the process. When contractions got intense it was Shontee's techniques that provided me with relief. She seemed to intuitively know exactly what I needed. Even though she's not a postpartum doula she stepped in during a crisis when I had some postpartum issues. She went above and beyond helping connect with my family for support and she helped me access the care that I needed when I was unable to do so myself. My doula Idara was absolutely amazing. For my first pregnancy, I knew going in that I was going to need somebody to guide me through this process, as I'd never done it before! And the blessing that is Idara fell into my life. She has such a sweet and gentle way about her, I was instantly comfortable. Idara really went above and beyond in connecting and communicating with me about my feelings, desires, and sources of stress related to my pregnancy and childbirth. She came over and we went through various birthing positions, provided a variety of resources for me to look into in my own time, and was just such a supportive individual for both me and my partner. The day of my labor, she came to the hospital and stayed with me all night until my 3:00am C-section. She was able to vocalize my needs to hospital staff when I was unable too, coached both me and my partner through contractions, and was just so supportive through the entire experience. Even after my son was born, Idara continued to reach out to check in with me postpartum. I ADORE her and she is such an asset to parents here in the Portland metro area. We had the absolute BEST doula Tisha! She was kind, funny, open and honest, and warm. She was so supportive of our birth plan, decisions we had to make when things didn't go according to plan, and our goals for postpartum. She always gave helpful tips and was very good at explaining what to expect as situations arose. We had great experiences from the pre-birth meetings to the hospital. Tisha came to the hospital multiple times to check in and help with contractions and talking through decisions we had to make. Unfortunately my birth did not go as planned (completely out of everyone's control) so we never got to active labor and didn't get as much interaction with Tisha during the labor and delivery as we were hoping, but I have no doubt she would have been amazing had that been the case. She also came over after we were home to check in, answer any questions, and show us how to safely use baby stuff. We are still in the newborn so I am sure I am forgetting other wonderful things she did, but would absolutely recommend DoulaLove and Tisha! Really great experience to just have someone there to support you and answer questions as a first time mom The only thing we didn't like as much but didn't want to take a star away because Tisha was so great, was the instructor for two of the birth classes at Doula Love were not our favorite. There were many things that she said that came off as very opinionated and judgmental if you were to disagree. She often went on tangents and did not answer the question that was asked by participants, just would say what she wanted to on the topic. The other instructor we had was really great though! I've had multiple experiences with Doula Love and many of the different services they provide, and can say it's such a great resource for soon-to-be and new parents. We hired Wendy as our doula for a VBAC. It meant a lot to me to experience a vaginal birth and it was important that we find someone who we "meshed" with and who we believed to be knowledgeable...Wendy is INSANELY knowledgeable. With 350 births under her belt, she knows what she's doing. She made us feel at ease from the get-go, and I felt very protected knowing she was with us during our birth. I feel her prenatal care really helped with the outcome of the birth. She read my mind during labor, stepping in ever so subtly to get me what I needed when I needed it. I felt she really cared about the outcome of our birth and while she frequently blended into the background and let the birth unfold, she knew when to step in and take charge. Ultimately her greatest value was ensuring my husband could be my main support and helping him to support me. I got my unmedicated VBAC and couldn't be happier about my experience with Wendy. If we have another baby I wouldn't hesitate to hire her again. We met the owner Wendy during our "Your Birth, Your Way" class in 2017. I was nervous my husband wouldn't take to the class as it was but Wendy was the perfect blend of humor and detailed information that my husband needed in order to learn and understand the birthing process. So when we ended up in a c-section with our first for breech presentation, we knew immediately that we would be going for VBAC with our next. As soon as we were pregnant again we started the conversation of hiring a doula and knew we wanted to interview Wendy. We were so impressed with her ability to connect with both of us, she was on OUR team. After hiring, anytime I had any concern before or after an appointment or just with pregnancy, wife-life and mothering a toddler, she was there to embrace me with her words! She just GETS it! We knew we'd likely have another "big" baby and that since I had never been in labor before that I'd go late. I didn't want to be induced at all. After being up all night and having a slow but intense labor, my baby was not just big, she happened to be surprise BROW presentation (we didn't know until she was out!). During pushing I remember bawling and begging for Wendy. She knew I needed strong words and I knew she'd give them to me! The rest of my team was exhausted but she came through and told me to get my baby out! My husband and I both agree that without Wendy we would not have had the successful VBAC. These classes helped empower him to support me during pregnancy and labor, and also gave me some tools in my tool belt. And let me tell you... we used every one of them! I also absolutely LOVED the New Parent Support Group that occurs on Tuesdays. Wendy brought so much knowledge and insight to questions and concerns mothers had, and it was a great opportunity to connect with other moms and babies who are the same age. As a first time parent, I don't know what I would have done without this community and support system. I'm so excited to be joining the Working Moms Support Group on Sundays now too!
