My husband and I took several classes at Village Birth leading up the birth of our baby, and I found my amazing lactation consultant, Hideko, after taking a very informative breastfeeding class with Yvonne. Hideko was an invaluable resource to me after the baby was born and continued to be for many months afterward. There was no way I would be able to breastfeed as long as I have if it weren't for her. Separately, I worked with prenatal chiropractor Dr. Jenny Stofer as well, who is also part of the Village Birth group now. I had experienced quite a bit of discomfort in my back during my pregnancy and she always made me feel at ease, listened to my concerns, and took care of any issues I had quickly and gently. I always left my sessions with her feeling energized, supported and like my baby had more room in there! It was incredible. Village Birth is made up of such a thoughtful, supportive and kind group of individuals who are talented and passionate about their work. If you're nearby and having a baby, it is the best place for top notch care and information!

In an extremely unfortunate event, my brother and sister-in-law, who were supposed to have their first baby right around my due date, suddenly lost their child during birth. I was in absolute shock and deep grief, and I was contemplating whether a home birth was the safest option for me. I found Julia, and she held my hand through every moment of fear and self-doubt throughout my prenatal care. She showed me what heartfelt understanding can look like while still not losing sight of what she knew I was capable of. I knew in my bones that a home birth was what I desired, but having this happen so close to me shook my confidence and sparked so much fear in me. During my birth, Julia held my hand every step of the way. She was proactive in her approach, giving me positions to hold that resulted in direct progression of labor, all while being very attuned to me and the baby throughout the process. I went from having a 38-hour labor with my first child to a 14-hour labor with my second, with only 4 hours of active labor. I honestly can't recommend her enough!!! Julia carries a deep understanding and love of midwifery care and her expertise are showcased in her level of care and knowledge. I want to share my experience to be able to help future mothers and especially first time mothers…read moreto have the best experience possible wether its for birth or postpartum as mine wasn't what I wish It would have been. I wanted to feel supported and try for a VBAC for my second birth so I decided to work with Andrey for the birth of our daughter. Everything went good at the beginning, we had our in person interview, shortly after that meeting we decided we would be a fit for each other. After that she came over one more time and afterwards she told me she had a family oversees she was working with and would be available via phone/zoom and if needed to she would introduce me to a back up doula incase she wasn't back in time for my birth. The way she introduced us was thru text (no phone call or even an effort to do a zoom call so me and that back up doula could meet each other) no professionalism. My prenatal care was very limited nothing close to what Andrey promotes. Then I asked for a list of what to bring in my birth bag, she said she would send, I had to ask about 4 times until she sent and the reason I didn't get it was because she had sent it to a 'Victoria' how do you forget your clients name especially when you are a part of one of the most vulnerable times in their life. Fast forward to my birth Andrey ended up not being there. I ended up working with the back up doula & my first time meeting her and talking to her was her walking in my room while I laid in my bed clothe-less in pain as I was going thru my contractions (not the most ideal setting to meet someone for the first time who is going to be a part of a raw and emotional intimate time) a few days later Andrey lets me know shes back in LA and is coming to see me & baby to help with postpartum care. Then texts me cancelling because her car is in the shop (She could've taken an Uber) and cannot make it and she can come another day. She comes over a couple days after that for a few hours and tells me she will be back @10am the next day to help us some more. The next morning @9:35am she txts me she cannot make it and isn't available until the following week. I had cancelled help from my sitter to help with my newborn and toddler and my husband had left to work because we had relied on having help from Andrey that morning. At that point I was feeling extremely upset. The care and support I was expecting which Andrey advocates heavily on was nowhere close to what I was given. What was supposed to be a time in my life where I should've been given unwavering love and support turned into a time of grief and sadness for me. I decided to have a conversation with Andrey and let her know how I was feeling and I no longer felt comfortable working together. She apologized and told me I was a client that 'fell thru the cracks.' Simply she overcommitted and I was put in the back burner or was her last option sadly. She offered to bring some postpartum stuff to help with grief and overall just to help me emotionally and would drop it off in the next couple days, she never did. Unfortunately Andrey constantly overpromised and underdelivered.

The two at-home sessions leading up to my hospital birth were so informative and really made my husband and I feel as prepared as possible to think through lots of different scenarios (and much more informative than any labor course we took!). Robyn is clearly incredibly experienced, professional, and so deeply cares about the mamas and partners she supports. Robyn was always available and on the night I went into labor, she was in constant contact guiding us during the time leading up to our hospital arrival. She was there waiting for us at 1am ready to go - she was so prepared and immediately made me feel at ease for this unknown experience. All of the techniques she offered me, the constant emotional and physical support during labor (she is a talented masseuse!!), and her encouragement and backing of all my birth preferences (including ensuring our gender reveal stayed a surprise until the very end!) made the day such a positive experience. Not to mention, had Robyn not been there, I felt there was a very high likelihood I would have had to have had a cesarean birth due to my extended labor process. Instead, the techniques and positions Robyn worked with the doctors and nurses to offer meant that I got to have the safe and healthy delivery I had hoped for. Robyn also set an incredible vibe (music, candlelight, relaxing aromatherapy, honey sticks for energy!) that made the room feel special instead of cold and sterile. My husband and I both agreed that having Robyn as our doula was one of the best decisions and we have a beautiful, healthy baby girl and only positive memories of the labor experience because she was such an important part of our birthing team. I personally really enjoyed taking her yoga classes at Golden Sol in Los Feliz, she has an extensive array of knowledge - from pregnancy to birth and the journey onward into motherhood. I felt supported and empowered by the information Sada supplied me with. My husband and I also took private childbirth ed classes with her. Sada seemed to be especially passionate about home-birth, but when I would see her interact with women having hospital births she had SO MUCH information to share with them about the hospitals and doctors they'd be working with. It was amazing really, and part of the reason I was so drawn to working with her. My labor was about 33.5 hours total, and at the first sign of labor (my labor started hard and fast) Sada came over and sat with me so my husband could get some rest since we had a big day ahead. When she came back the next afternoon, I was still laboring, and completely exhausted. She helped me (and my team) stay focused, and was the strong energy I needed to get through my slow labor. Leading up to my labor Sada was a continuous support system for my husband and I. She checked in with me, counseled me, hugged me when I needed a hug and really took the time to dive in deep so that she could help me have the experience I wanted. After my baby was born, we had a lovely visit a few days later sharing fruit, gawking at all the hair on my sweet babes head, and discussed the happenings of my birth. : ) I ended up making smoothies with my placenta, so i did not need to utilize LABK's placenta medicine services, but Emiliee did teach me how to make a tincture just incase I wanted to make one with any left over placenta (which I ended up doing). She helped us: 1) establish milk supply, breastfeeding techniques and helped us understand how to create a flexible feeding strategy based on our needs 2) she prioritized me as the mother as a reminder that a happy & healthy mom & dad = happy & healthy baby. She took care of me in all the ways I didn't know I needed (perineal support via sitz bath, observed & helped my baby nurse while I slept after a difficult night of little rest, always made sure I have a nutrient forward breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks and constantly ensured I was properly hydrated to support breastfeeding) 3) taught us baby-caring techniques / options that best fit our baby's needs (feeding, sleeping, changing, bathing, soothing, playing, hygiene, etc) 4) gave us recommendations for products that were user friendly for first time parents (bottles, nursing pillows, swaddle wraps, etc) 5) light housekeeping and baby education during the times the baby was asleep 6) made herself available via text or call during times she wasn't here with us Things I appreciated about Ofelia: 1) you can tell she LOVES babies and has a passion for childcare. She reminded our son every day that he was safe and loved and he was easily comforted by her love 2) she NEVER lets the baby cry -- her methods include tending to the baby's needs/internal clock -- not just what the parents want 3) she spent hours/days/weeks observing our baby to understand his sleep/feed/wake schedule; hunger/distress cues and taught us how to understand his verbal and body language 4) if the baby had a bad night or day, we would talk together to analyze what happened during the day to cause this disruption to our baby and course correct the following days. 5) No assumptions or guess what the baby needs based on "standard/general" guidances, she made recommendations based on data collected on observing our baby and his specific needs As first time parents, not only did we learn so much from Ofelia, had the best care from her, but our family also grew to love her. We will miss her as we attempt to take our training wheels off but we are comforted to know we've established a foundational schedule and understanding of our baby that as he continues through these developmental months we can reach out to Ofelia to come back and help us understand our baby's needs at this new age and she'll be easily able to pick up on what he needs based on her previous observations.

I've been holding off writing this because I don't really know how to write this review. How do you…read morereview someone who has had such a lasting impact (and continuous impact) far after they stop showing up not only on your newborn but on your other child and your family as a whole? When she left it reminded me of Mary Poppins, flying off with her bag and umbrella, I wanted her to stay forever but knew I'd be depriving other families who so needed her during such an intense time. Ofelia helped us when our second baby was born. Our first had been born 2 years earlier and the shift from one to two was a kind of shock to me. Ofelia, in the most hardworking way, helped with everything: the most delicious nutritious meals, siblings getting used to the new baby, latch / tongue tie issues, all things breastfeeding related(she's a lactation consultant as well and unlike other consultants, because she's with you for hours, can provide insight into what is and isn't working on a much deeper level like: how you're eating, sleeping, baby's latch, etc.), baby sleep issues, and emotional support. She also comes in ready to work. I'd be doing something when she showed up and 15 minutes in I'd realize she'd already have put up a load of laundry to wash, washed bottles and folded clothes. She is absolutely like no one I've ever met. When my first was born, and I had no help, I had major breastfeeding problems and ended up having to supplement with formula. This time around, now with my second, with the guidance of Ofelia (who is also a lactation consultant) I was able to store up a three month supply of milk while also exclusively breastfeeding my baby. That is the Ofelia effect. She once told me she loves to garden and I completely believe it because that's what she does, she plants a great start to a crazy time in your life and tends to it every time she shows up. She gives everything she touches love and you see it blossom under her care. I truly think one of the reasons my older child is so warm with my youngest is because she showed me how to involve my first in empowering and warm ways. Everything Ofelia touches is better for it. I have asked her for advice in mothering and as she raised three of her own kids, she was able to give such great ideas and advice. She also was a nanny and has a nanny service and, on my instigation, was able to show me how to manage my nanny better. I will also say that when I first met her in person, her quiet confidence I mistook for not being super affectionate and warm. That couldn't be farther from who she is, once she starts she is warm and kind and will put you at ease with zero pushiness of her own opinions or advice. I can't recommend her highly enough and I can guarantee you will become a more intuitive, educated mother on how to take care of your baby and other children through her guidance. She truly does mother the mother.
