Now this is a place I would've never visited were it not for the pandemic. Jamie W. and I were tooling around Santa Monica recently and decided to stop at the Calif. Chicken Cafe for lunch. We discovered they weren't allowing dining inside and didn't have anything set up outside. With our takeout bags in hand, I asked the young server if there was any place nearby where we could eat. He immediately responded "Douglas Park on the next block". Not knowing if it was a homeless hangout or a massive kiddie klatch, we were more than pleased to see what a bucolic space it turned out to be. It was an aircraft factory (thus the historic name) and then a movie studio lot in the early part of the 20th century. There are plenty of features over its ten-plus acres. A huge playground takes up the northern part, and a lawn bowling green dominates the part closest to Wilshire. In the middle is a large pond populated with happy mallards and other birds (photo: https://bit.ly/3qqlGbM). There were well maintained picnic tables mostly surrounding the pond including a smaller one with its own rooftop (photo: https://bit.ly/3InSbNH). It was like it was calling our names and just shows that a silver lining can show up when you least expect it. RELATED - Exploring LA? The regional park is popular in Santa Monica, which was formerly the site of an aircraft factory and movie studio lot. The park hosts a number of facilities, including a bowling green and the county's largest municipal pond, tennis courts, and etc. It is a vibrant neighborhood park with plenty for everyone, many wild ducks and turtles, though the water in the pond is very dirty with a lot of trash floating around.

This is such a cute park! It was my first time here and we came here with a group of 20 with a party bus to take photos for my friends birthday. Would love to plan a cute picnic here in the summer

    Cute park!

Douglas Park, "...named for aviation pioneer Donald Douglas, who opened a factory and airfield on the site of a former movie studio in 1922..."* is today's verdant, tree-lined, well-maintained open space in the heart of Santa Monica. A destination for play dates, brown bag lunch dates, a stroll, to engage in sport or just decompress. Find a large playground, splash pad, plenty of picnic tables and benches, a lawn bowling green, two lighted tennis courts with drop in use and three reflecting pools, home to resident ducks and turtles. Reserve the 40-person capacity, (no kitchen, one indoor restroom) Clubhouse for a gathering https://www.smgov.net/Departments/CCS/content.aspx?id=31694. Met a rehab friend for a leisurely walk on even terrain to challenge our recently replaced joints in the real world. We were pleasantly surprised, equally pleased to find so many people of diversity utilizing Douglas Park. We'll be back! Metered parking surrounds the park on 24th and 25th Streets to the west and east respectively, California Avenue to the north and of course Wilshire Boulevard. * https://www.laconservancy.org/locations/douglas-park

Beautiful park for most parts. Nice trees, places to sit. It has 2 tennis courts and kids' playground on the California Ave side. Lawn bowl on Wilshire side. A small useable building for meeting on Chelsea and Wilshire corner. A duck pond in the middle. I see a few people enjoy the grassy areas, have their lunch, walk their dogs, and relax with their kid(s). This park is used for kids' birthday parties on the weekends. Otherwise, it is nice and peaceful. The chairs are mostly clean. The area is well maintained but Monday can be a messy after all the parties. Sadly no dog area. And unfortunately there can be homeless. The City just or are renovating the plants around duck pond. There are restrooms by the kids' play area nearer to Chelsea.

This was such a cute park, we found it during our walk. They have turtle/duck/fish ponds, waterfalls, playgrounds. We had so much fun looking for turtles and watching the stork hunt for little fishes. Park is clean and landscaping is nice and neat. Green grass, benches everywhere, lots of trees. Fyi- keep an eye on your kids, I saw some little boy fall in the pond. Bottom half of him got wet, yikes!

When I'm in the area and have time to spare, I love to visit with the ducks and turtles in this park. For being right on Wilshire Blvd., you're set back so far that it feels storybook and sweet - with no trace of traffic noise! There are always meters available, so I get a spot in two seconds. And if the sun is out, there's the shade of trees or benches in full sun to choose from. I see kids at this park a lot - there's a playground further back, and what little (or big) kid doesn't like to watch the ducks and turtles swim around? If I've planned well, I've grabbed a sammich from the Starbucks a couple blocks away, so I can give the bread parts to the duckies (and the hungry pigeons that always come around). I always feel like I've gone on a little tiny vacation when I leave this park - even if I've only been there 15 minutes!

Is this a nice park for a kids birthday party? Are there tables?

Yes, there are plenty of tables (at least 5-6 spread out across this park). You can bring your own if you have more food. I have seen many Birthday parties here. You can do setup 60-90 minutes earlier. 2 hours if you want to be sure. I have seen… Read more

The park was fantastic, pristine and spacious with a top tier playground. Felix's parents claimed a prime seating area right outside the playground, where we could eat and socialize while keeping an eye on our various kids. The set-up felt very safe and easy. I admit to losing track of my five-year-old for long stretches at a time, and once finding him in a piece of playground equipment with a group of children he didn't know, giggling as two of their dads spun them around and around. My two-year-old spent a lot of time in the sand with several toddler friends, pouring sand into a play table and also all up in their clothes. We brought our elderly basset hound Duke in a mobility stroller, and he got lots of attention, too. It was a nice outing for our whole family. I also couldn't help but notice that the park was right next to the Santa Monica Airport and other airplane-themed entertainment. We live pretty far from Marine Park, but I have a feeling we'll be back.

Parking was a breeze. The park has an indoor room you can reserve if you plan far enough ahead, but the outdoor tables are first come first served. Felix's parents claimed a couple tables and brought two of their own, creating a sizable shady party space right next to the playground. I think the whole area was surrounded by a fence, so none of the pre-school age children could easily wander off. My boys had a blast playing in the sand and on the cute structure. There was also a little set-up for puppet shows, and all the kids kept going over there and pretending to buy and sell ice cream. I live too far from Santa Monica to make much use of Joslyn Park, but I know a good park when I see one.
