I'll have to admit: I don't own a Douglas Hayward bespoke suit. I am merely a cineast and enthusiast of fine clothing - there is a distinct connection between those two interests and the late Douglas Hayward's business: Hayward was not only the favourite tailor of a great many British Swinging Sixties' acting legends, but he also supplied a number of noteworthy films over the years. Remember the sharp suits as worn by Michael Caine as Charlie Croker in the original Italian Job? That was Mr Hayward's work. He was also in put charge with bringing Roger Moore's/James Bond's safari suit era to an end. If that doesn't tickle your fancy than you might just as well stop reading right now.
Of course, all this wouldn't be worth much if Hayward's was now owned by some luxury giant intent on squeezing the last bit of credibility out of a respected name. But I urge you to step inside the charming little shop at Mount Street and I promise any such qualms will be dispelled within a second.
This is a true original, a place that seemingly hasn't changed much over the past few decades - and all the better for it. One can still see the artisans in the background going about their business - and no, those aren't mere stand-ins doing minor corrections while the actual work is being done in Poland or India. Hayward's hasn't been infested with the Saville Row Syndrome (yet), so let's hope it stays that way, despite the recent troubles following Mr Hayward's passing away.
If you appreciate genuine craftsmanship and accept an atmosphere that might be a bit dusty yet genuinely original, then there is no excuse not to visit Douglas Hayward the next time you are in Mayfair. read more
