Eddie's Lebanese Eatery - Part of the vegan platter

Tonight I had the pleasure of eating some of the best Lebanese food I've ever eaten!…read more We ordered the Vegetarian Banquet (made vegan) to share and I missed getting photos of most of it because we got into it so quickly, so here's the one shot I took of the night. My personal favourites were the hummus and tabouli, balila, spinach triangles (with spinach from Eddie's own garden) and the stuffed vine leaves (which I don't usually enjoy but these were so good)! Our host for the evening Eddie (yes, THE Eddie) was humble, attentive, and had such a passion for homestyle cooking. I highly recommend giving Eddie's Vegan Eatery a visit if you live near the St George area of Sydney. From the starters all the way to the baklava and tea at the end, it was a divine experience.

You'll notice that as soon as you arrive you're warmly greeted by Eddy and his staff who are very attentive. All of the food we've eaten is very fresh, the banquet is good value and the platter for 2 for smaller groups also offers a good variety. The a la carte menu offers all of the usual lebanese cuisine, the serving sizes are generous and I think the prices are fair for what they offer. We've been many times and have also gone in large groups and the food has always been consistent. Make sure you finish the meal with some lebanese coffee and a sweet!

I'd just moved to the Belmore area and was living there for a few weeks before I'd discovered the beauty that is El-Manara. Lebanese food is always good, but sometimes, certain restaurants can be hit and miss with the quality and value of their meals. I love just ordering a mixed plate, and to my luck El-Manara was still open when I phoned them, after looking up the local Lebanese restaurants in the area. This one was one of the closest to my house, 6 minutes around the corner to be exact. So when I asked if they had a mixed plate, the man on the end of the phone said he'd "put something together for me". I told him to make it for 2 people to share. I expected the price to be about $30 (because I've also ordered from other Lebanese restaurants in the area, and based on the other business' prices, they charged $15 for a mixed plate for 1, so I just assumed enough for 2 would be double that.) I was surprised when the man on the phone said "Okay, for you, twenty dollars." "Twenty dollars?" I asked, in disbelief. Knowing what Lebanese restaurants are like, they are usually very generous with their food, and for me, ten dollars each for that kind of food is massive value for money. He confirmed the price, and I told him "I'll give you $25 when I get there" he paused and then asked "will you give me $20 or $25?" with a slightly confused tone in his voice. "I'll give you $25 man!" I said excitedly! Knowing that was what I valued my food at, hoping that he'd give me good value for my money. His response to that was: "You give me $25, I give you extra food!" Well, brilliant! Needless to say, ten minutes later, I picked up my food - and to my surprise, walked out of there with 2 huge meat trays filled with so many chicken and lamb skewers and kafta sausages, 6 falafels, vine leaves, a plate of pickled peppers, two garlic dips, two tubs of hummus, two tubs of baba ganoush and two bags of Lebanese bread. It was more food than my sister and I could eat in one sitting, so we devoured the remainder for lunch the next day! I think I got the luck of the draw, perhaps I was the last customer they served before closing that night, so I possibly received all the extra food they had left in the kitchen so they didn't waste it by throwing it out. But for me, being a Lebanese food lover, who is willing to pay for the quality and quantity of my food, but also loves a meal that is excellent value for money - this restaurant ticks all the boxes! Upon pickup I noticed they had a very small in-house seating area for diners who wish to dine-in, however, I highly recommend this joint mainly for takeaway purposes only, as the seating isn't very generous and isn't very intimate as you're smack bang next to the ordering counter for people who walk in off the street to order their takeaway. Haldon Street boasts a fair few Lebanese restaurants, but if you're taking your food home with you - definitely hit this place up for a taste test!

Firstly, we were greeted by the bored look from a young man with limited english who led us through entirely empty venue and we got seated. A bottle of chilled tap water was served. While the restaurant looked clean and tidy, a quick visit to the bathroom revealed slightly less positive picture. Looking at the menu we noticed that the banquet price has risen to $40 and seafood to $60. Still, we wanted to get some food and we proceeded to order two meat banquets and one seafood. And then to our utmost shock we were told that despite the order standing at $140 we must order another banquet for the fourth person. Just to clarify, this is not "all you can eat" place where per head fee is required, this is set menu / a'la carte restaurant. Obviously we didn't want to spend another $40 because of the restaurateurs say so. After short discussion we did what we have never done before, we left the venue dumbfounded and shocked describing middle eastern culture in words that would not be published on this site. $40 for food is expensive. Actually it is very expensive. $60 for fish is just a rip off. The waiter was of the "I don't give a damn" type, maybe not rude, but definitely lacking in the service and manners department. Don't think we'll ever go back. For all hungry souls walk to the Bankstown RSL, excellent food for approx $15 a head.
