I miss the helpful customer service we enjoyed for 25 years. Bushels and pecks of varieties were available for purchase, and I spend several hundred dollars sending Christmas gift packages to friends and family around the country. This fall we had to argue to get a half peck bag of nameless apples (they turned out to be delicious. I made 4 pies and two jars of applebutter). I asked to send out Christmas boxes as I have for 10 years to rave reviews from all recipients, this year I left my contact information. It's been three days with no call back. My friends will miss the Indiana apples and treats. It's disheartening to lose this once thriving apple orchard. read more

Ever since my boyfriend and I started dating, he's always compared the apples I've bought to the apples he's purchased from Doud's. "Doud's apples are better...Doud's has the best apples...This isn't as good as Doud's." Rolling my eyes every time his speaks of his apple snobbery, I've always attributed this ridiculous pedestal he's put a piece of fruit on to the fact that Doud's is located in his hometown and chalk it up to nostalgia. Recently, I was able to make my own judgment to see if Dowd's apples are truly "the best", and I have to say...they're pretty phenomenal. The orchard is about 30 miles north of Kokomo in Denver. Don't be too disappointed when I tell you that Doud's is not a U-Pick orchard, because there is still plenty to pick up inside of the big barn. At Doud's you can pick up unpasteurized apple cider, caramel apples, apple butter, apple barbecue sauce, 1/2 and full pecks of several varieties of apples, apple cider slushies, and dried apples. Not only that, but Doud's also carries homemade jam, preserves, popcorn, fruit butters, gourds, berries, cakes, pastries, and trail mix. It's quite an array of fine edibles for The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Indiana. My arms were full by the time I got to the cash register. The apple themselves all depend on the variety. Doud's makes it easy to choose by offering samples of each kind out on the floor and providing a tasting/usage guide. I'm grateful for both, especially since I can never say no to a free sample and need to know what I'm buying. On my visit, I picked up a peck of the Prima, a crisp, sweet apple that is perfect for eating and tossing in a salad. Between eating apples and enjoying all kinds of homemade fall goodies, it definitely will not be the last purchase I make this fall. Although I'll never admit out loud to my boyfriend that he's making me more of an apple snob, I do agree that apples from Doud Orchard are better than anything I've bought in a store. We'll continue to make trips up there for a little bit of nostalgia and a whole lot of fresh-picked noshes. read more

My wife and I went here over the summer. Family owned and run, the people are so nice and inviting. Different items depending on the time of the year, we have learned as we have been back many times. Doud Orchards is worth the trek. The prices are really good. The folks are nice. The cider is great. Please try the Gold Rush. It might be one of the best ciders I've ever had. I like the candy options, but it would be nice to have some more baked goods like cider donuts. The parking can be a bit muddy, but that's the only downside. read more

I will admit that I have not been to many other orchards, but I strongly believe this is the best. They have the most delicious unpasteurized cider that I have ever tasted. They dip the apples in warm caramel on the spot, and there are usually free samples of steaming hot spiced apple cider to sip while you shop. This place is no frills and the parking lot is often muddy, but I think that adds to it's charm. read more

Most favorite orchard ever. Pricey, so you are forewarned, but worth it. The cider is unpasterized, therefore a step above all others in taste. Their summer peaches are the best around and absolutely amazing in flavor and texture. In autumn, the apples are crisp, fresh, and very flavorful. read more
