When they don't know what's wrong with your pet they start to play the guessing game, ordering all sorts of tests and ex-rays some of which are unnecessary. They can't read ex-rays they need to send them out to be read which I find extremely bizarre. (more money). Spend tons of money and then get referred out to a specialist. The practice itself is decent, but there are some shady business practices ongoing that lead to a huge lack of trust. Trust is an important factor when leaving your pets care in the hands of a stranger. It also becomes a huge factor on the financial side of the interaction as well. Some shady business practices have been experienced when dealing with Double A vet. I initially scheduled an early morning appointment for my dog, about ten days in advance. I get a call a week in advance telling me the doctor has an emergency and has to cancel the appointment a week later. A week out emergency? Seems odd, they try to reschedule for 3pm the same day. A week out emergency that only lasts a few hours? Then they come forward and say there wasn't an emergency they just overbooked. I ask why I have to be bumped as it wasn't my fault and I already have the time off. They say they can keep the appointment. Day of appointment, I call to let them know I'm on my way and they tell me I already missed the 1030 appointment??? I never made a 1030 appointment because it doesn't fit my schedule, my appointment was at 11 and I have a voicemail confirming the 11am appointment. They tell me the appointment was NEVER at 11 am but left me a voicemail reminder for my 11am appointment. More lies from Double A. They continue to provide excuses and say they cannot see or care for my dog. They say they were going to offer me a 12pm appointment, right after telling me there was nothing else available for the day. Theyve lied to us on numerous occasions and do not provide transparent business practices. Ive since made an appointment with Banfield. Forget Double A Vet, they lie, they aren't trustworthy, I would not feel comfortable bringing my pet to them or paying them for their services. Avoid unless absolutely necessary. LONG STORY BUT SAVE YOUR PET AND MONEY!! GO ELSEWHERE! Adopted my first kitten and took her here based off the reviews & boy do they take advantage of first time pet owners. My cat began with eye issues and after 3 different prescriptions that didn't work, along with hundreds of dollars at this point- I was now told by Dr. Andrea Autorino that my cat would most likely lose her eye. So now I'm recommended to an eye Dr they work with & after another few hundred dollars- still NOTHING and my kitten's eye was just getting worse. Doing anything to avoid surgery to remove her eye, I drove down to Bolton Emergency and I kid you not, they have my girl some medicine and a week later her eye was 100% better! After this, I was put off and wanted to change vets but it seems it's very hard to do these days as nobody's taking new clients. Months go by and I bring my kitten in for vomiting and not eating her food. Again, being a first time pet owner, I call after a day of throwing up and they tell me to bring her in immediately as it could be something serious. I bring her in and I do the whole shabang- emergency vet check, medicine & x rays. Then they want to send the xrays out, at this point I lost count of how much money I've spent at this place- all to get GUESSES and NOT ACTUAL ANSWERS!!! They "believe a STRING is wrapped around her intestines and need to perform emergency surgery to get it out" (words from Dr. Andrea Autorino). Of course I give the go ahead, and what do you know- they call me back and not only was the SURGERY UNNECESSARY because there was NO STRING, but they still don't know what's wrong with her! I send my kitty in to diagnose what's wrong- IF ANYTHING- and now they're performing surgery they SAID was NEEDED. Dr. Andrea Autorino and I had a phone call to discuss my frustration of not just the $1,200 bill they stuck me with, but that my cat had NOT improved, and came home SICKER and now in pain with a fresh surgery wound! She changes her wording of "EMERGENCY SURGERY" to "EXPLORATORY SURGERY" and knocked off about $200 from the total bill. After plenty of back and forth, she ultimately credited my account a whopping $72, yet after again voicing how I feel taken advantage she goes on to tell me if they credit me back my money then the "it made no sense to come in and do the surgery"- I kid you not those were her exact words. Longgggg story short, my kitten is so much better today- no thanks to Double A vet, who claim to be all about family and looking out for their customers when in reality they're just another money making machine. They are extremely insensitive, and incompetent. Our Dog was dying and Dr. Lynn Hettinger was was laughing loud and obnoxious when he needed to be put to sleep. Show some sense of professionalism your a doctor for god sake and this is a dying family member. Doctors saw our dog multiple time ran tests yet never figured out an issue that other vets said should have been seen. We took him to another vet and they herd him bark and diagnosed things this vet missed. Only issue was it was to late as he was too old for surgery. They can not diagnose at all. Would never ever go back here if I knew this is how bad they would be its too late for my boy but Would say go somewhere else for yours. The place center of Newington is much more professional. I found more out from research on my own then the vet knew about what was wrong with my dog. I would pay double or even triple if they could diagnose whats wrong. IF you do take your animal here would recommend paying for getting xrays and ultrasounds and if they can't see what's wrong taking them to another doctor for another opinion. read more

Woods, ....WOW, i am shocked.....GET THIS!!! I was just telling hubby of your difficulties and he told me i spoke too soon! He called TODAY to get an appt for our older dog's annual (due mid June) and he wanted to get it before he goes back to work (he recently had two surgeries) and I'll be DAMNED but they told him if he wanted to be present they couldnt schedule it until JULY, or we could do a DROP OFF appt in June! WTF???? I am just as furious as you are (altho they sd we could drop him off between 8 to 10 and pick up 3 to 4 hours later, so he would not be there all day. I would never do that with our younger dog who was a puppy mill dog, but for the big doggy who doesnt mind kennels, we might. I am stunned and I had no idea , i wonder if they have just started accepting too many pets or why they are doing this! PLEASE....if u find a good loving vet, send me a message and let me know, and i will do the same. I guess we just had no idea since we really only need to see them a couple of times a year..... I would definitely try to call and speak with Dr Andrea herself to see if she can help u out, and explain that u have been going there for so many yrs..... but i just wanted to let u know its NOT JUST YOU...they are treating EVERYONE like crap apparently! I stumbled upon this practice during a medical emergency with my cat (saddle thrombus), where I was 45 minutes away and my roommate had to bring him to the closest vet that would take him in. I ended up losing my best friend that day but I was blown away by the compassion and care that the vet (I believe it was Dr. Lavery) and staff showed towards my cat, my roommate, and myself. I was in shock and frankly a mess (this was all very abrupt) and Dr. Lavery's manner was a tremendous comfort while she laid out his grim prognosis and options to me. The other members of the staff that helped me were equally helpful and empathetic. It was a huge comfort to have such wonderful people, who clearly care so much about their work and the animals in their care (and even the sobbing, inconsolable humans!) treating my pet in his final hour. When I'm ready for another pet I will absolutely be coming back here. read more

We have taken all of our dogs to Double A over the years. We recently had to put our dog down because he had a brain tumor. Dr. Pina could not have been kinder or more compassionate . They made the process as peaceful as possible. Then we received a beautiful card from the staff. Today in the mail I received an acknowledgement from the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine that Double A made a gift in our dogs honor. Okay I have a rather large super hairy cat who was apparently in an especially nasty mood today. He tried to scratch up the vet and eat the assistant (who had on welding gloves and really needed chain maille), but they were very understanding and sympathetic towards my beast. Most people would have shot the cat at this point, but the Vet really loves animals and you can tell that the staff does too. The professionals here treat your animal with respect and understanding and you won't have to sell your first born to pay for the vet visit. Just to give you an idea of how reasonable they are there was no charge today and to have my cat anesthetized so that he can have his checkup, shots, nails clipped, and the large knots shaved off his back (reverse Mohawk. lol.) will all cost under $100. That is amazing! This is the best vet. read more

As a good pet parent, sorry, but I want to talk to the doctor. We switched to Wethersfield Animal Hospital which switches doctors from W.H. We have been taking our dogs to Double A for many years. They are always friendly and helpful, and Dr. Andrea helped us through the emotional time of putting our dog down 3 1/2 years ago. We just recently got a new puppy and have brought him to double A as well. Our visits recently have been great - the staff is so loving, friendly and knowledgeable when you are there in the office, and we have never felt as though we were rushed through an appointment. There is grass, trash bags and a garbage as you walk from the parking lot to the building for any pets that have to go on the way In. We love the spacious waiting room, there is always plenty of room for families and their pets, big or small. At times it can be difficult to get a hold of them over the phone, and there have been some instances over the years where we have walked to an empty waiting room and are left waiting for a short period of time before someone comes to help us. Hopefully these things will improve, but hey don't deter us from returning either. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place, and in particular Dr. Autorino. She is seriously an angel to me. She saved my dog's life twice (had a small Yorkie who was twice attacked by a large dog). She gave such sincere and loving care to my pet, right up until the very end. She kept her healthy for a nice, long life. We put her down when she was 16. And she was so sympathetic and understanding - she truly understood our feelings. We would have wanted no one else to handle that day but Dr. Autorino. Again, very loving and gentle throughout...even followed-up with a beautiful hand-written card and a paw print from our pet. She was a wonderful part of my dog Courtney's life (and my childhood growing up), and my family and I trusted her completely. Andrea helped ease Courtney's pain and we put her down peacefully in 2009. It was so hard, but she was an indescribable help and source of peace during such a sad time of loss. Now a few years later, I just recently adopted a Yorkie puppy with my husband and we have been taking the new pup to a vet close to our home, only because we moved out of town and Double A wasn't close to us anymore. However our new vet made us realize how good we had it with Double A and Dr. Autorino! It's just not the same at this new place, and thus we will be taking our new pup to Double A as well. It's worth the long drive because Dr. Autorino really is THAT special. I think it says a lot when we have a perfectly fine vet next to our home, yet we'd rather make the treck back to my hometown for truly exceptional veterinary care. Dr. Autorino is an amazing woman and an amazing veterinarian. I'm so happy our new puppy can be a patient there. We can't wait to go back to her! read more

The veterinarians were lovely but the only problem we had with them were the "run-backs" as many people have said. We would show up and often sit there for 30-45 minutes before our dog was run back for 5 minutes. We didn't even get to speak to a vet! When my dog was really sick and quite literally bleeding to death internally they couldn't help me because "all the vets were busy." For our second dog we ended up going elsewhere. If they were able to leave appointments open like human doctors do then they would have been perfect, but unfortunately they're just too busy to do a good job of taking care of all their patients. read more

I have been bring Dogs to Double A for 9 years now and my girlfriend even longer. She has had 5 dogs cared for at Double A. The staff is patient and friendly. The Vets are knowledgeable, kind and gentle. They are always close to on time, unlike Dr.'s for humans, and show respect that I too have a schedule. Double A has been extremely customer/owner friendly...always willing to to talk through issues to satisfy any questions we have. I've also never experienced any scheduling problems. Dr.Autorino is the best .I have taken my dogs to her since she graduated from Tufts in I think 1986 .She was at another practice at the time then she opened double A maybe in about 1997 or so.I always have Dr, Andrea look at my dogs so I cannot comment on the other vets who work there but I have always been treated very well by all the staff that I come in contact with.My oldest dog Rocky who is a sizable German Shepherd is totally aggressive to Dr. Andrea but she doesn't flinch she talks calmly and she takes care of him.Rosie the younger Shepherd likes her.Dr Andrea totally loves animals and probably takes home way too many who have medical issues or deformities .You can tell where her heart is it isn't a business to her it's just a chance for her to take care of animals She cares .True you aren't getting an appointment next week but just plan ahead .If you have an emergency during her normal hours she'll see your dog or cat maybe that's why she is usually running a little late most times but she tries the best she can read more

I've been bringing my dog there for about 3 years now. She was an abused animal who has fear issues. They are most kind and gentle with her. Their prices are way lower than my previous vet and the vet techs who speak to me on the phone are extremely helpful and if they can't answer a question, they go ask the vet and get right back to me with advice. As for people complaining about drop offs, I too experienced that as well but it was because they were booked that day and I needed immediate assistance. I really didn't find it a terrible idea because it was explained to me that I had my choice, wait for a few days or drop the dog off that same day for a quick check. . Well, I would rather have a vet check an injury out right away than wait. Just my take on it. They never told me that I had to wait months for an appointment. I called yesterday and they took her in for x-rays today. read more

Only go here if you are being served by Dr. Autorino herself. We started bringing our golden there when he was young and Dr. Autorino was fantastic. Over time, as the place got busier, other "doctors" started seeing him. If they tell you to see Lynn Hettinger, run for the hills. Take your dog somewhere else. She is rude, unprofessional, uncompassionate, and seems to lack common sense. (i.e. we had to put our dog down after 12 years of happiness with him and she was screaming and laughing while doing this. Unbelievable.) I think this is a good place to bring younger dogs, again, as long as Autorino is seeing your pup. We brought our dog there several times in the past few months for many different reasons: he was having trouble walking (even after giving him his arthritis meds), his belly was swelling, he was losing his appetite, drinking a lot of water, etc. Any joe shmo could tell you something was going on. After the number of times we brought him, Gould and Hettinger kept saying nothing was wrong with him and it was old age. Low and behold these two "doctors" missed the fact that he had cancer. They even did a blood test upon our request and claimed that there was nothing abnormal in the results. Finally, we brought him again last tuesday and said "listen. something is seriously wrong. stop telling us it is old age and do something useful." Their response: he has a very large tumor on his spleen and he could "drop dead" at any moment. Literally, those were the words that came out of Lynn Hettingers mouth as she told me my best friend had cancer; a situation that they could have diagnosed months before but they were too incompetent to do. They said it was a very very common issue in Golden's his age. Then why did they NEVER mention that to us the multiple times we brought him there? They are a miserable place with very incompetent doctors. I would suggest staying far away to avoid the frustration and heartbreak that this place brings. Instead, i would suggest a place in Newington that treated our doggie and us with total professionalism when we brought him there for a second opinion. Newington Veterinarian Clinic at 177 Day Street was really great, and they have a lot of experience with older dogs. They also admit when they can't help and direct you to the place you should take your dog for more help (they told us immediately to take our pup to a cancer center in windsor - much kinder than acting like nothing was wrong with him). After months of telling them something was wrong with our dog, Double A told us about the cancer on Tuesday, and our pup was gone by Friday morning. I know they couldn't have changed the cancer, but they definitely could have told us sooner so we had a little more time to say goodbye. Again, Dr. Autorino is great and this review is not a reflection of her expertise. She, however, should take some time to look more closely into who she is hiring as this place has now dipped to a three star rating, when it used to be a five. Again, cant say this enough times: keep your pup and your children far away from Lynn Hettinger. She is loud, obnoxious, and doesn't have a clue how to be a compassionate doctor, or a doctor at all. If you are expecting any bad news, do not let her be in the room with your children when you talk to her. She might tell you that your dog is going to "drop dead". read more

This was a nice practice when Andrea first started it. She started with such promise and did a commendable job at first. Then it grew too much and became more of a "see how many dogs we can do for money" thing. Then the phase of you had to leave your dog and they didn't let you see the vet .. what she was calling "run back". I have been in and around professionals in the dog world for 30 years and have seen vets in 4 different states and this was a shock. I am not paying my hard earned money for sub par animal care. The last straw for me was this fiasco :Mind you I had been a regular client and spent a couple of thousand there at that time already. ... One of my dogs went into renal failure on a Thurs night and I called to get the dog put down the next day as he was in extreme discomfort and pain. I was told " We are sorry but there is nothing available until next Tuesday." That to me is the epitome of heartlessness. My favorite vet is a long way away from here in another state. He is about the animal and not about the money. If there is an emergency he will open the office after hours without a complaint. I am still searching this area for a vet that is up to his standards without success so far. I use to go to Dr Knack and he was a good vet for many years, but due to the turnover at his office I had switched to Double A. At this point I will not go back due to the unsatisfactory care and procedures. Vets in this area I have found have come to the point where they are trying to rob you blind. They insist on a physical exam ( temp and respiration is all they do) just to give a rabies shot or other vaccination or sell you prescriptions at 4 plus times the going rate if they wrote one out to fill elsewhere. read more

I brought our two dogs to Double A soon after moving here from another state. It came somewhat recommended by a townie, although I will say the recommendation came with a statement something like "it's about the only thing around". Our older dog (13) had some funny symptoms a few months ago and I brought him in. I got the impression that the vet was trying to sell me on treatments that were expensive. I brought our old guy home and his symptoms went away. About a month ago, I discovered that both dogs' vaccinations were overdue, so I called to make an appt asap. I was told by the receptionist that I could get an appt- in six weeks! I commented that that seemed a long time. She seemed bored by my frustration. I said "Wow... I guess we'll have to find another vet.." She replied "Okay! Have a nice day!" I then called Beaver Brook, nearby, and they gave me an appt the same day for the vaccinations. They, of course, also tried hard to sell me what seemed to me to be unnecessary products and procedures. Is there a vet anywhere who doesn't? read more

I had been bringing my 11 year old yellow lab there for 7 years. In February I had to put my precious girl down. For 2 months my dog was experiencing vomiting. She was being treated with medication to stop the vomiting. Upon completion of the medication the vomiting would start again. Finally, blood work and xrays were conducted. Both should no serious concerns. Fourteen days later I had brought my dog to Rocky Hill Emergency Hospital where they did did xrays and found a large tumor on her pancreas. Dr. Gould at Double A, who was treating my dog never saw that tumor. The doctor at Rocky Hill Animal Emergency spotted it immediately on the xray which was forward from Double A. My dog suffered, because Dr. Gould was treating the symptom and never detected the true problem. When I addressed the issue with her, she became defensive. When I addressed the issue with Dr. Autorino she did not apologize or contact me. I had chosen to have my dog put down with Rocky Hill Emergency. They were caring and very sympathetic and they use a very reputable cremation service which I had all the faith in the world knowing that my dog was treated with dignity. I felt confident that I received my dogs remains through a clean facility. Never did Double A send a sympathy card for the loss of my dog who was a patient of theirs for several years. I had faith and trust in them until this serious situation. I found Dr. Gould to be rude and defensive in dealing with her error. For that reason, I would never return to Double A with a future dog. read more
