Officer Otis (who is mentioned a lot here) sat right by the speed limit sign and then pulled me over, telling me I was going 70 mph in a 45 mph zone. I was very nice and cordial and apologized for speeding, and told him I was not familiar with this area as I was just passing through for vacation. Otis looked me dead in the eyes and said "I'm sure the speed limit signs are just as big in Pennsylvania (where I am from) as they are here in Florida, sweetheart." I have never gotten pulled over for speeding before this or since, and the lack of kindness and sarcasm this officer gave me in that one comment ruined my entire day. He was very unprofessional, rude, and unforgiving for someone who was just passing through. I feel bad for the residents in this town who will have to deal with someone like him everyday, because he certainly cares more about his ego than he does for the safety of civilians.

Otis set right there just pass the 45 mph speed limit sign and stopped my for going 68 in a 45. I was on my way home from completing some army training. I had been gone for a few weeks and was just looking to get home to my family. I was still in my uniform when I was stopped. Cpl. Otis never told me why he stopped me, he just asked for my license. I had to ask him what speed did he clock me at. I tried to talk to him, he wouldn't listen. He just handed me the ticket and said have a good day sergeant. As I mentioned before I'm a police officer myself, so I've been in his shoes on numerous occasions, but I take the time to listen to people and tell them why I stopped them. Not this officer! he shows no compassion or respect for anyone. The last time I received a speeding ticket was 11 years ago, and he didn't take that into consideration. That's things that I look at before I decide to write a ticket. I don't write tickets for stats, but I truly feel like Officer Otis does.

I've witnessed and heard officers make comments and conduct themselves in ways that seriously undermine my confidence in their professionalism and judgment. For example, I have personally heard an officer openly say that they smoke marijuana at home, which raises serious questions for me about the standards and accountability within the department. More broadly, the way this department is operated does not give me confidence that policies, rules, and procedures are being followed consistently. There seems to be a lack of accountability, professionalism, and transparency, and that ultimately damages the public's trust. A police department should be held to a high standard because officers are entrusted with significant authority and responsibility. Unfortunately, based on what I've experienced, this department has a lot of room for improvement. If you are a veteran bring your DD-214. There is a one-page form to fill out and they have them here. It took about 10 minutes. Once you fill out the form you can give it to one of the sheriff's. They will run your background check, then take your picture and give you your card. The whole process takes about 10 minutes once you see a sheriff.
