The picture here isn't their current location. Regarding the location, I'll be honest, I was a little skeptical at first! We had a closing with SBA, a federal agency. So when my husband and I pulled up to an old hospital building in Denton, we were like "Be like SBA to send us to a place like this." We walked inside and took the elevator up to the 4th floor. When we stepped off, it was like stepping into a New Orleans styled, classy oasis. It was just beautiful inside! Note the pictures. I recommend that you do not use this law office if you are someone who doesn't know quite what to do and needs an expert and honest recommendation. I was sent to Laughlin Law because I was told that I would be taken care of, since I was an only child and had never been through a death of a parent before, which ended up being the worst decision that I have made in regards to my mothers estate. I spoke with Fon and told her my situation, and was very clear that I was the only heir and that I had a will, but that there was no real property other than my mothers land. She told me that I would need an affidavit of heirship in order to get the deed transferred. I paid the initial fee of nearly a grand to transfer the deed of my deceased mothers property to my name. They then came back and stated that they needed an additional fee of the same amount because another affidavit of heirship would have to be filed for my grandmother, who passed in 2012, and that it would cost them additional fees with the county to file. I asked them to hold off so I could research it. After researching, through multiple of different resources including the Denton County Tax Office and Denton County Appraisal district, I found out that the $1,000 was not needed. In fact, the affidavit of heirship forms are located on the Denton County Law Library's website that I could fill out myself. I also got records showing that all of the property is in my mothers name, and there is no reason to have an affidavit filled out for my grandmother. Once I found this information out, I emailed Fon and her paralegal asking for a refund. After a week of not hearing back, although I got very quick responses prior to this, I decided to call. Fon advised me that she is not going to refund the cost of preparing the affair to, that she would only refund me the $75 filing fee. I was completely baffled, as you can imagine. She stated that she would get with her paralegal to get more information, and would reach back out to me. This was Monday October 22, and I still have yet to receive any communication. If you are someone like me, who does not know anything about wills, deeds, or what to do after the death of a parent and you are looking for expert advice, do not go to Laughlin Law, they will take full advantage of the situation! read more
