I have explored their extensive menu of traditional Indian, Malaysian and Sri Lankan dishes trying everything from the usual curries to their venison biryani and haleem, a mutton dish that is part of ancient cuisine of Hyderabad. Nila's specialty is roti, dosai and other types of Indian pancakes that are cooked at the front of the restaurant adding to charm and authenticity of the dinning experience. Their ghee dosai is spectacular creation with a very large thin rice pancake formed into a cone on which a second pancake is impaled like the brim of a hat. My favorite is their Murthaba Ayam, a stuffed roti filled with chicken, onion, tomato, chili, fresh egg and spices. Nila offers great food at affordable prices making it a favorite for students and families. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and the décor basic with Bollywood music videos playing on two televisions, except during the cricket season when there is cricket, of course, and during Ramadan when they are switched off. The restaurant is halal and during Ramadan has an all you can eat buffet. Upstairs there is a function room for catered parties. All the food is halal and there is an extensive vegetarian selection.

This place has a great tacky charm, and in my mind is the best Indian/Malaysian in the area by a long shot. It's well worth braving the stupid Sydney rd traffic to try this place out.

They are located in Little Italy if you don't want Italian food, and they offer good lunch sets. We got nasi lemak with beef rendang and fried chicken + a drink for $16 AUD. The rice here is so fragrant and delicious! The fried chicken was solid, but I'm not a huge fried chicken person. The beef rendang was tender and the milk tea was strong. Service was fast and efficient, so no complaints there. You'll get in and out pretty fast during lunch. They have a pretty big menu at reasonable prices, so give this a try if you're in the area!

Killiney is another non-Italian option on the Italian dominated Lygon Street. They also have great hawker food options at competitive prices, and our whole table decided to try a range of the menu but let's get to the real news: The Nasi Lemak options! I was almost in Nasi Lemak heaven..... --------------------- Nasi Lemak with Egg and Ikan Bilis Nasi Lemak with Fried Tofu (Vegetarian) Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak with Fried Fish Nasi Lemak with Rendang Beef Nasi Lemak Complete A (Fish & Curry Chicken) Coconut Rice served with egg, deep fried fish, curry chicken, sambal chilli, fried anchovies, peanut and sliced cucumber. Nasi Lemak Complete B (Fried Chicken & Beef Rendang) Coconut rice served with egg, fried chicken and beef rendang, sambal chilli, fried anchovies, peanut and sliced cucumber. ------------------- We went for the Nasi Lemak Complete B, which was definitely a great option considering it had two protein options. I would love to come back and try the fried fish and curry chicken. Coconut rice was pretty good, not overpowered but with a nice hint of coconut. The egg was a nice hard boiled egg, split in to two which is how you will see Nasi Lemak served in many places. The Fried Chicken had a very nice flavour and was super crispy on the outside. The beef rendang unfortunately was not that great and the beef was very tough! The anchovies, sambal and other condiments were spot on! The speciality which is the Kaya Toast was definitely a surprise to me, my in laws assure me that is authentic to how Singapore serves it. With big chunks of butter in the middle! The butter for me was overkill but the Kaya was brilliant. Look forward to coming back and trying something else.

However, don't let that discourage you, we're here for the food after all. We ordered from the take away menu which included the Sag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Korma and Chicken Biryani. Every dish was filled with amazing, rich and tasty flavours. Sag Paneer had huge pieces of cottage cheese submerged within the spinach. Both the chicken and lamb were cooked perfectly, tender and a joy to eat with their respective sauces where you could taste the freshly ground spices and herbs. The Chicken Biryani had a pleasant sweet taste mixed with a wonderful amount of spice with hidden pieces of tender chicken underneath the rice. The garlic naan did a wonderful job of soaking the sauce with its fluffy goodness and texture. We ordered the regular sized versions of these dishes and there was enough to feed us twice over ticking the cost-effective check box and raising my smile dial even further. The service was friendly and prompt, the chefs dressed neatly focusing on their food preparations was nice to see. I have read some negative reviews concerning the food quality and taste and I'm worried that these reviews are not authentic, so please take their advice with a grain of salt and do what I did and ignore them. Yep, that winning feeling :) If you're in the area looking for the Northern India food experience, it's hard to go pass Ameer Tandoori. Although the décor needs work, the food is sensational and one restaurant you shouldn't miss out on.

The potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, rice, naan bread, and unlimited refills make for a very filling meal, and the flavours are very nice. Plus, you can't beat the price. It's $6.50 for all-you-can-eat vegetarian thali. It comes served in an ugly metal platter with raised partitions that makes you feel vaguely like you're in institutionalised home -- or prison. Luckily, all you have to do is look up and around you to realise that you're actually in a pleasant, cozy place -- the atmosphere is nice, cheap and cheerful, with brightly painted walls and a view out onto Elizabeth Street. They also have a variety of sides like samosas that you can order, as well as a few drinks (mango lassi, etc.) It's definitely authentic-tasting Indian food, as well -- as evidenced by the fact that many of the patrons here are Indian themselves. This place also supports the homeless -- anyone who is hungry and needs a meal but can't pay is welcome at Om for a free meal between 3pm and 5pm. For vegans, note that the vegetarian thali is all-vegan, but specify when you order so they make you vegan naan bread. (The naan bread by default is non-vegan, but they don't mind making it vegan for you.) Also, the mango lassi and a few of their desserts contain dairy, so just be aware. There are 4 locations of Om Vegetarian -- one near Southern Cross, one at Capitol Arcade between Collins and Little Collins, one at Wales Arcade between Collins and Flinders Lane, and this one (Elizabeth Street, just north of Flinders Street station). I've been to this one and the Capitol Arcade one and definitely prefer this one in terms of atmosphere. To get to this one, you have to go into the Gurkhas Institute Building and go up the stairs. It may seem a bit confusing at first, like you're going the wrong way, but you'll find it :) It's definitely worth it. (There are lifts as well.)

Also don't be afraid to try the little sweet treats they put on your plate - I hesitated at the ghee nut and carrot mix that was sitting under my naan once but then it put it in my mouth and it was delicious.
