Getting from New Madrid across the Mississippi, you have two options. You can drive 50 miles north to the Cairo bridge or you can drive 40 miles south to the Caruthersville bridge. You can swim. Or, and here's a thought, you can take the ferry. I opted to take the ferry, driving east from New Madrid through some very rural spots that had me second guessing myself.
But then I got to the end of the road, the fourth car in queue for the ferry. And while waiting and watching the Mississippi, a dozen more cars queued up behind me. When the ferry arrived, it's a very small boat. Ship? Either way, not at all large. I watched a few cars unload and then we loaded up. I followed the dude's directions into the center lane on the boat, stopped when he told me to, cut the engine and set the parking brake. He came by and took money. Yes, CASH ONLY. About 20 minutes later, we all got back into our cars and we're on the other side!
Pro tip: CHECK THEIR FACEBOOK FIRST before making the journey because the ferry doesn't always run. They say that they will update that if there are issues.
