Just got back from a 2 night stay at Dorabelle campground and feel compelled to write a review based on the cleanliness of the bathrooms, Lol! The camp hosts take great pride in keeping the place clean, we saw someone cleaning the bathrooms multiple times a day. I'm telling you, you would never guess that these are non-flushing restrooms. They were immaculate. We stayed at spot #60, which is in the lower part of the loop and was a very short, easy walk, to the lake. The site was perfect, not too close to other sites so there was some privacy, and only one site away from the restrooms. Fair warning though, you do have to take some steps down from the parking spot to the actual site, so if you have a lot of stuff to carry, just be aware that you will need to travel down about 5-6 steps. The site itself has decent shade, the picnic table and fire pit are in great condition and there is a very nice, clean, open and perfectly flat spot to put your tent between two trees. If you forget something, "town" is just outside of the campground entrance, within a few minutes you have access to restaurants, and other stores. Somehow though, you feel off-grid, even though you are so close to town. We had full cell phone service, even though we chose to stay off our phones, if you needed to use them you totally could. I had a very important family camping trip this weekend and I have to say Dorrabelle Campground was just such a beautiful experience not just for me but for my whole family. We will definitely return! I have to give a shoutout to the camp host Jamie! She is such a sweetheart and beautiful soul. She made the stay feel extra homey. It was a bit cold at night lowest 42 I believe and highs were 64 degrees. During day it was nice and warm with the sun shining. Ensure to bring lots of warm clothes to bundle up in the evening and be kind to the campground. Ensure to pack anything that was packed in to keep the area clean. Oh and be aware, you can hear wolves and coyotes throughout your stay. Ensure to keep all food put in a tote safely and in the provided camp storage so the bears are not attracted to your campsite. Keep a close eye on the little ones at all times! read more

We reserved two sites at Dorabelle campground since it was our first time staying and it was recommended by a neighbor. Our first campsite was site #45 which is a double site that accommodates 3 large 10 people tents this specific site has an extra spot next to the parking lot and we were able to fit another large tent. This specific site also includes two picnic tables that are connected and two fire pits, behind the campsite there is stand still water and you occasionally get bugs that hang around until the evening. Campsite 45 was able to accommodate 3 large trucks, two of them being f350 and 1 Silverado, we probably had room for 1 more small car or suv. This campsite is directly across from bathroom. The second campsite was #46 and this one was a single site, it accommodates 2 cars. We used this one for a truck & trailer and my sister and her family ended up setting up a large Core 10 person tent. She had plenty of room for two more tents. The campground itself is very nice and has lots of Sequoia trees around. We were about a 5min walk to the cove. You can definitely hear the coyotes yapping at 2:45am-5am so keep your dogs inside your tent and secured. There isn't any showers which is why i knocked one star off. We spent the day at the lake and wanted to hose down the little ones but unfortunately no showers. There isn't any flushable toilets so i'd highly recommend investing in a portable potty/shower area if your thinking of visiting. read more

My family has been coming to shaver lake since the '60s. Every year we have our family reunion and enjoy two weeks of fun in the sun. In the last few years we've gotten to know the hosts Frank and Jamie! They are amazing and make our stay all the better. They provide 10 star service, because 5 is no where close to being enough. My family loves Dorabelle Campground! And I probably shouldn't give Dorabelle a great review because this will make it even harder to reserve a site here. The setting is beautiful: tall trees, giant granite rocks everywhere, a creek and a lovely lake where you can park your chairs and beach towels to boat, swim, kayak, paddle board or just lay in the sun. The campground hosts are helpful and keep the place clean. The pit toilets ( nobody's favorite) are cleaned every day which is a credit to the hosts. The campsites are close but the terrain is hilly so it's not as if you're in a parking lot with camping slots. Every site has unique surroundings. So if you want to camp in a place where there are no other humans, devoid of other peoples' noise and music maybe you should travel elsewhere. But if you'd like to take yourself or your family to a warm clean lake where the people are (mostly) friendly and the campground hosts are great come to Dorabelle on Shaver Lake! read more

I like camping to get away and lose myself in nature. The camping spots are very close to together and in sight, meaning no matter where you look you can see campsites and other campers. Restrooms are near by and it's a clean well maintained campsite. You do have to pay extra to park in the day use area even if camping. They have access to the lake which is a nice area of Shaver Lake. I would recommend this spot for families and first time campers or people who want amenities. Overall a beautiful place and the staff is so friendly and helpful! read more

I've been coming here for the last 20+ years. I have always had a good experience and I have stayed at most sites. Staff is always great. The forest service revamped this campground a few years ago, and it's just as nice, but more accessible. Vault toilets are always clean and for those complaining about showers, there is a lake right next to all the campsites. If you truly need to bathe every day, go stay at Camp Edison where the campsites are on top of each other. read more

The campsite is beautiful but big and very busy. The camp hosts especially Jamie are super wonderful and friendly. The vault toilets were always very clean and I loved that they also have water taps everywhere. I booked site #22 for the weekend. It was at the end so was hoping it would be quiet. Unfortunately the campsite next to me and another campsite across from me were extremely loud and having parties. Quiet time is from 10 to 6 and these campsites disregarded this rule entirely making both nights sleeping there very unpleasant. Quiet hours are not enforced. This is the only reason why I wouldn't go back there to camp. The site next to me had four tents set up so also seemingly no limit on how many tents or people to a site. read more

Ok so. Yes, this is a great campground. Gorgeous actually. We camp a lot so we are accustomed to all types of camping amenities. The ONLY campground negative is that they don't have showers. But I knew that going in so, I was aware. As we all know, vault toilets suck but they were actually well maintained. My 11 yr old had a hard time with toilets but he got thru it. THE ONLY complaint was not with the actual campground per se, but it was the fact that didn't "police" unruly campsites. They are all over you for paying for closer lake parking and blocking roadways while you unload, but zero policing a-hole neighbors. Other then that, it's a great place to camp read more

Second year in a row staying here for the 4th of July. Had 3 sites for a group of people. Love this campground. Sites are a 10 minute walk to the lake. The hosts are fantastic- they really care about the grounds. They clean up after people more than they should have to, but it's nice to see sites raked after a group leaves and restrooms cleaned multiple times a day. You can use any wood from the grounds that can fit in the pit. Town is a 20 minute walk or 3 minute drive away. Plenty of potable water which is always a benefit. Only drawback it it's crowded. But hey, it's the 4th of July so it should be expected. We even hit the community pancake breakfast this year which was great. I would definitely recommend. read more

Dorabelle is a very well maintained campground and a pleasure to stay at. My wife and I just did our first three-night tent camping at site #58 and absolutely had a great time. 57 is pretty close but blocked by a large boulder that give some separation - but it was vacant as was site 59 - all of which I'm sure added to our experience. We have just booked another three-night trip with my sister-in-law and her husband for the end of June and another trip with the group and my mother-in-law and her husband with their 28' trailer for the first part of September. Can you tell we liked it? :) Super convenient to some great restaurants, market, convenient store make those spur of the moment decisions so easy. read more

I love this campground! I think the location is perfect. What I didn't like is how there aren't any pictures of the sites in the website. We had campsite #53 and It a lot closer to #54 than I expected. The picture I attached is a good representation to how close the campsites are to each other. However, the campground has different levels, so they're not just flat out right next to each other. The hosts were really nice. From what I saw, every campground was shaded at least at some point. #53 didn't have shade in the morning. The gas station, market and firewood are all within a mile. You can easily walk to the lake from your campsite (or pay $10 for closer parking). Camp Edison has way more yellow jackets compared to this campsite, but Kens market has fly and yellow jacket traps that work great. read more

Simply beautiful. Our group of 12 had site #36 for 3 days and 2 nights in October 2016. It was amazing. Our site was above the lake with a couple of easy ways to get down to the water. It was also very easy to go for a nice long walk as far as you would like to go all along the lake. Did I mention it was gorgeous?? The camp hosts were great too! Very nice people that stopped by to talk story a couple times. One thing that made our stay extra good was that the bathrooms were extremely clean, with lots of toilet paper at all times, and never smelled like a bathroom at all. Our first time back since the renovation was completed was August 23rd to August 26th, 2014. Everything has been re vamped and is new! Camp Hosts are still just as friendly as ever! The RV availability is based on your rig size (ie tent campers will fit where a 40 ft RV wont) Firewood is available for purchase at the Camp Host sites. Ice and food is a 5 minute drive away in the Town of Shaver Lake. And the lake is accessible from the campground (boat launch at Shaver Lake Marina). Please stay on new trails when going to lake. Very well maintained and staffed campground. Cleanest vault toilets ever. Perhaps because it's also relatively new that it all seems so well kept. There are lots of trees to shade each site, and sites were at different elevations for some extra feeling of privacy. The lake was close by with a walking path down to the shore but I was surprised how much of a hike down the hill that can be somewhat steep with steps. We were still able to carry our kayak down tho. Sounds do travel from neighbor sites. And some other campers had poor etiquette, but that's life. Great site hosts and orderly. Parking was $10 extra for a second car. Clean water spigots that is potable and tastes ok. read more

About 1hr to the camp site. We paid $5for picnic. We parked near a restroom and followed a path to the lake. We swam and ate...ate. No fish to catch...not even minos. Two mallets were hanging out around us. I want to camp out here. So far the best place and clean. read more

This campground is beautifully maintained . When I walked into the assigned campsite, the grounds were neatly raked like a zen garden. It was such a treat to my trip to Shaver Lake. My friend brought a kayak and there was a nice area to beach the kayak on the lake as well as places to row out to on the lake. We hung out on our very own private island one day. The lake is boater friendly as well as jet skis. It is a fun lake to play on. My only negative review is the woman in the kiosk when you check in is not the friendliest of hosts. I accidentally left my car parked in another sites parking spot and I not only got a very harsh voicemail from her but I also got chewed out at the kiosk in person by the woman. It was a simple mistake and I even asked if I could do anything after the fact. Needless to say I paid a fee and got yelled at like a teenager and my apology didn't help. My experience with camp ground hosts has never been so awful and I've been camping for decades. The man I'm assuming is her husband or partner was super sweet. Great campground though! read more

Place was great. Toilets regularly maintained, lots of water, and lots of firewood around to burn in the fire pits. Sites were perfect size for our family of 5. Lake was a 4 minute walk away from our site (Site 49) and our kids loved it. Hosts were wonderful and really nice. This was my kids first camping trip and my husbands 3rd. This campground is very, very nice. I arrived early, and could not check in yet. No big deal, found a shady spot near town and just kicked back. To my surprise, the camp host called me to say my site was ready, and to come on down ( well before official check in). Super nice people, the hosts keep the sites very clean. Site was all raked when I arrived, and they have pretty good separation between sites. Restrooms are clean. Just an all around great place to camp. I will definitely be coming back again.....p.s. the fire pits are super cool too, nice swing away grill, and a place to set the coffee pot to keep it warm. read more

My kids and I stayed here overnight on a Saturday in the beginning of July 2007. There are 68 sites (many able to accomodate an RV or trailer w/o hookups) with Shaver Lake within varying walking distances. On weekends at least, there is a 2 night stay minimum (we paid for 2 nights for our 1 night stay). Sites are $19 per night. The town of Shaver is a quick 1/2 mile away. The camp hosts live on site and are very sweet. The hosts had wood for sale when I went ($7/bundle), though I also saw wood for sale in town (@ $5/bundle). They allow leashed dogs. There are dumpsters on-site for trash. No bear lockers are provided. Every site has a picnic table and a smallish fire ring with an attached grill. This is the only US Forest Service run campsite at Shaver Lake. Though there are plenty of trees, there is zero privacy between sites. Being the middle of summer, it was also jam packed, as in we were lucky to be able to get the last site available for that day and believe me, everyone had shown up to camp. A good number of the other campers were having a very loud, very jovial time starting likely from before we arrived (about 5 p.m.) to very late into the night, making it hard for my family to get sleep. Whoever was in our site before us left a bit of a mess, which we cleaned up. The bathrooms were your basic pit toilets, which I don't mind, but these for whatever reason seemed to have a worse than usual fly problem. Our fire ring was filled very nearly to the brim with ash so that I actually felt the need to dig out a pit in the ash in the middle, banking the moved ash on the sides as much as I could without spilling over, to have a fire. On the bright side, our site was right up against a gigantic rock hill my kids climbed over and over again, and we were treated to a visit by a leaf-rustling fat frog after dark (so cute!). I won't be staying here again if I can avoid it - it's not my kind of car camping place. If you need somewhere to go in the area though, it's not hard to find, and I've actually been to worse. :) read more

Dorabelle Campground is basic family camping. If you have a problem with kids and loud neighbors, don't come. The camp hosts are a very friendly elderly couple, but they are not very good at enforcing camp rules. The obnoxious RV-ers in the site behind us partied until midnight and nobody came to tell them to be quiet. It was very difficult to go to sleep. The bathrooms are basic pit toilets which are a bit stinky but aren't that bad. It would be nice to have some showers but it isn't a huge deal. Only a few campsites have lake views but those are booked up quickly. The normal sites are not very spacious and you can see all of your neighbors really easily. There are TONS of kids and their parents let them run through your campground. We were eating dinner and about four children ran through our site and screamed at our dog (who wasn't doing anything). It can get a little old. I have to give this campsite some credit though. The town of Shaver Lake is really close by and is great if you forget something. On our last night we were to lazy to make food so we picked up a yummy pizza from Shaver Lake Pizza. In the morning when nobody is awake it is really nice to walk around the campsite and explore. You can hear the coyotes yipping! Overall, the camp hosts could be a little better at keeping people in line but they are so nice, it wasn't that much of a problem for me. The close proximity to the lake and the town is great. We took a day trip up to Huntington Lake and saw the Regatta, which was great! If you have a big family this place is definitely kid friendly, though if I go again I will probably stay at a site in Huntington Lake. read more

Let me start by saying this: I rarely ever write yelp reviews. This campground, at least site 18, is wonderful. The restrooms are clean, and the sites well maintained. I came here with my wife and daughter for the fourth of July. I had a fantastic time. 18 is not shady at all from 12 to about 4pm, but you can beat the heat at the lake. I recommend going to camp Edison for a great spot, but this was a busy weekend and lots of people populated the dorabelle beach. Anyway... I had a great time here. Great family campground. read more

We used the day use/picnic area and not a camp spot. We came in later in the day on a summer week day and there were lots of available tables just steps above the lake, surrounded by trees, accessible with a stroller. Was hesitant when found about about the $10 fee but the views and atmosphere were worth it. Day use can stay until 10pm, sites have no fire pits but do have grills. Did not use restrooms so cannot comment on those. Staff/host was friendly. read more

This place definitely deserves a five star. I've been camping to many places in my life and this was one of the best and its only 21$ a night..what a deal!! If you love being nestled in the pine trees and swimming in the lake this is defiantly the place for you! There are 68 sites both tent and RV. All are non electric sites. Tent site very spacious, lots of room. I thought I'd write a review since I feel the others did not give this place a fair review. The owners of the place are an elderly couple. They are the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet. Love them! Every time they passed by our campsite they would send us a friendly wave and smile. Also they were very helpful. My friends and I often went up the range station where they were at and asked questions. As we left they always said "if you have anymore questions we would be more then happy to answer them". The owners here didn't hesitate one minute to make sure we were satisfied with our stay here! Other reviews said this place was loud and not that quite. I beg to differ. My stay here was very peaceful and quit and it was June. The quit hours are at 10pm. If someone is loud here you can go to the ranger station and complain and they will take care of the noise. However one night hearing a few young people being loud after the hours, for the most part I often would hear nothing but the birds chirping in the trees. Most peaceful place I been to so far, very relaxing. One thing I love about this place is that if you go up the road they have a small town that has everything you could ever need! They have a market, hardware store, a few small, restaurants food mart/gas station, gift shops. They also have a cute little cafe called Blue Sky Cafe where you can get really great blended drinks such as what you find at Starbucks. Also have free wifi. Great way to start off your day! There is even a pizza place that you can call and have them deliver the pizza to your camp site! Some things to do here are swimming, the lake is very easy access. If You have a boat you can ride it around the lake. There are several hiking trails with beautiful views at the top. If your looking for fun. Just 2-3 miles down the road is Shaver Lake Water Sports where you can go boating,canoeing,paddle boating,jet skiing, kids can jump on a water trampoline, etc. While I stayed at Dorabelle, I talked to a nice women who said she came here three times before and loved everything about this place. She also informed me that more water was in the lake then before and when the lake was low they did a little maintenance and clean up. So the lake looks even more beautiful then it already is! Also they do allow pets. They just need to be on a leash. I love this place and will defiantly go back. Only complaint is they do not have showers. read more

Dorabelle Campground is walking distance to Shaver Lake. The entrance is easy to find and close enough to town that getting extra supplies is convenient. The campground is lovely and well kept, and honestly, it's a dreamy getaway from Los Angeles! But if everything is so great and facilities are in order, whyyy would I give them such a low rating? It turns out Dorabelle is haunted by ghoulish hosts that treat their guests like your codependent, abusive, high school ex-boyfriend; that is to say, they treat you like shit. A short anecdote for context: Our group was gathered around the fire on our last day. A host approached us, minutes before quiet hours, and told us that we'd received six complaints the night before, and that we needed to be quiet because we need to be respectful of other campers. He said that our fire was "bullshit" and "the fact that we received six complaints is also bullshit," and that next time it would be a sheriff escorting us out of the campground. His approach was not only uncalled for, but his scare tactic made us feel unsafe. We had never received ANY warning regarding six complaints, and we felt disrespected as guests. I'm thankful for the great hosts that maintained such a pristine camp, but it seems their wavering professionalism should be inspected by CLM services. Why were we lectured to be quiet BEFORE quiet hours? How is it okay that he'd been so condescending and calling our experience "bullshit"? And why is this person not being disciplined for his aggressive and unprofessional behavior? Anyway, I hate long yelp reviews so I'll wrap it up, but in the spirit of Halloween, and as a personal catharsis, I thought I should leave this thorough, bone-chilling write-up about Dorabelle Campground to warn future campers. I've sent a formal complaint to CLM because I believe Dorabelle Campground deserves better. Until there's a change of power, I'd recommend you find another place to camp because no one should spend their holiday afraid and disrespected. read more

Camp sites were very nice and it was great being close to the lake, however the staff was horrible(lady at the front). Immediately upon entering we were encountered by a lady that was extremely rude checking us in. Every time we saw her she just glared. On my final day we were hanging out on the lake and she kicked me out saying that my pass ended at noon and I wouldn't be allowed to go back down without paying in cash! Unfortunately I didn't have any at the time. I will not go back if this lady is working. read more

5 stars for the hosts - Laura & husband (1 set), Roberta & husband (2nd set). The hosts were constantly scooting around on their carts, checking sites, bathrooms, etc. They were friendly and helpful. Always around to answer questions. The sites were all neatly raked I noticed too. I also observed them going around picking up bits of trash that were strewn about from careless people. Wood was 1 bundle for $8 or 2 for $15. 3-4 stars for the location. Shaver Lake is pleasant. Warm water. Good weather. I don't get why people can swim in the water and have motor boats polluting up the place, yet dogs are not supposed to go in the water. 1- star-- bathrooms. YUCK. The name should be changed to 'Dora-smell'-- ancient pit toilets that despite the hosts keeping them stocked and tidy were SMELLY!!! Flies, and meat bees abound. Plus they are tiny and small, just enough room to walk, in and turn around. SPIDERS!! Ewwwwe there were these freaky daddy long leg spiders that were attracted to the light. They were all over the tent and in the bathrooms. Basically if you had light on, within minutes a ton of daddy longlegs would crawling towards it. Was it spider breeding season? I don't know, but tons of those giant daddy longlegs. Thank goodness they were harmless- but still EWWWE!!! The good news is that Dorabelle is closed soon (2013) for revamping. I am hoping they put in new ADA vault toilets and even flush toilets if possible. We unfortunately had site #51. A fully exposed smallish site, the fire pit was about 6 feet from the road. Pics look fine on Reserve America, however is right next to site 50 and when the site 50 people are there you get the view of their cars parked directly next to the table. Anyway, I'd go back in the future if the toilet situation changed. read more

Very nice. The campsites were so clean. Freshly raked and well maintained. Love the big metal bear box to keep your food safe. Although the toilets are non-flashing, the stalls were very clean and well stocked. We were right in the middle, # 57 and the walk to the lake wasn't more than 5 minutes. The only thing I wish they had was showers. However, there are plenty of bathrooms, trash bins and a water spickit every couple of sites. read more

Clean campground, great location to the lake. I was a little apprehensive because the reviews of the camp hosts had been so negative, but they were really nice. We never saw them, only when we would leave the campground. Each site looked super clean and well taken care of. I definitely recommend the first set of sights-1-5? Cause they get a good amount of sun. We had another site at 58, and it had too much shade so we kept our site #5. Cute picnic tables at the beach- prob first come first serve- each spot is awesome though. Fyi- you cant bring your own wood because of the bugs so dont waste your time packing any. We were able to use scraps around the woods and bought some in town. read more

Awesome experience! Nobody has mentioned the sandy beach free of boat waves--shaded during the afternoon--just a few-minute walk from the campsites. The huge rocks in the cove are everywhere, so lift your boat propeller. The camp hosts were so kind to my son. My boat had to be taken from the water after hitting a rock in another cove and the Marina's wanted $130 to pull the boat out on my own trailer. When the camp host heard about it, he said, "I've got a truck... let's go get your boat out..." FREE! Then, after repairs, he put it back in a day later. FREE! I won't tell you the best campsites at Dorabella because I plan on going back each summer; sorry, but no Free tips here...lol. Thank you camp Dorabella! read more
