I recently went into Doogans because I was really early for an appoint upstairs, so I thought I might as well take a look at the selection of reptiles. I'm a reptile lover and I own 8 lizards. I also constantly like to know about the care of reptiles that I do not own, because I find it fascinating to learn about the different species and their care requirements. I go in and I check the reptiles. They only had two lizards available. A leopard gecko in a horrible set up, with no water. And a Uromastyx lizard. For those who don't know the care for them, they need a basking spot of around 115-120 Fahrenheit, they need it to be hot for them to thrive in Captivity. He was actually hiding from the heat source, when they do that, there is something wrong with the care, and the animal is sickly. They eat primarily seeds, so housing them on millet, and other seeds is more beneficial for them, because they can eat it and pass it through their digestive system. Where as sand causes impaction, which will lead to the animals death in a slow and painful manner. This Uromastyx was LITERALLY dying in the tank. It had it's mouth full of sand, it was barely moving around and he was emaciated and skinny, and couldn't even open his eyes.Like the leopard gecko, he too had no water or access to fresh greens. The water bowls were full of algea and they looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a year. They wanted $150 for it. $150?! For a sick animal that'd be better off euthanized than staying in that enclosure for another day? Spending $150 on an animal that would cost someone well over $3,000 to give it proper vet care, set up, and food. After seeing that, I put the lizard leash that I was about to buy back on the shelf, because I wasn't about to support such practices. If you want a new reptile, then go to The Reptile Wrangler. Much more knowledgeable staff, and the animals they have are in great condition and cared for. They know where they get their animals from and some of the animals are rescues and up for adoption. read more

Doogans told my husband if he places 4 orders of guinea pig pellets that they would give him a discount. He was told that they would be able to supply us ongoing with this agreement. First time no problem. It took several weeks for them to place the 2nd order and then when they finally had the 4 bags in stock we went in and they charged not only full price, but more then the other pet stores charge. This is not a place to buy a pet. First of all, the reptiles- which included leopard geckos, uromastyx, and bearded dragons- were housed on a sand substrate. Using sand as a substrate is a leading cause of death to reptiles in captivity due to impaction (a recommend a google search to see for yourself). Also, it seems that the owners are unaware of the species they are caring for or keeping. I saw that their pacman frog was labeled as a "tree frog". This is despite the fact that this species is not arboreal and does not climb trees. The store is also filthy, and there seems to be far to many animals for the confined space that they have. Depending on who you deal with, staff can be standoffish at times. Way to many animals in each tank (mainly in reference to the fish and rodents). This store is convenient for buying pet accessories but under no circumstances would I recommend purchasing an animal from this store. I think that the staff try their best to care for their animals and are passionate enough, however, are not as knowledgeable as they ought to be on proper animal husbandry. read more

Toronto has banned the selling of puppies in Pet Stores, so why can't Barrie follow suit. It makes me sick to think where these puppies come from. ..And don't tell me reputable breeders. Cause a reputable breeder would not allow any of their puppies to be re-sold in Pet Stores. Us dog lovers just ask that you stop selling puppies. Our shelters are over run with unwanted dogs, who need loving homes. Why not promote them, instead of trying to make big bucks off of puppy sales. By the way your TV commercial says..'Puppy adoption'...That is misleading, you are not adopting them out, you are selling them like a product to make a huge profit...Disgusting!! read more

I bought a kitten there recently. I understood that there is a 72 hour guarantee that if it isn't approved by your vet when you take it in for a check up, then you can come in and exchange it with another poor kitten. I wouldn't do that, I fell for him the moment I saw him. Needless to say, I didn't really think that he needed the check up but sad to say, he did. After many visits and a huge bill from the vet, he now is eating on his own and actually getting up, moving around and playing. I was told by the vet that he was close to death. When I first got him, he didn't eat on his own, he slept a lot and couldn't be bothered with moving or playing.....I do not think it is fair to be sold sick kittens or animals for that matter.... read more

Heartbroken...I had my $900 Chorkie puppy from Doogan's for about a week when it died a couple days ago. I have had many, many dogs in my life - the vast majority of which I bought from a breeder. Out of the three dogs I have purchased from a pet store - a Lhasa Apso, a pure-bred Chihuahua and now this Chorkie (Chihuahua-Yorkie mix) both the Chihuahua and the Chorkie died within a week. I will NEVER buy a petstore dog again. You don't know the conditions the dog was bred in, you don't get to see the parents and you don't get to meet the person conducting the breeding to witness their integrity, knowledge and degree of care. I really do believe, especially after this last experience, that petstore pups are ridiculously overpriced for the quality and many are bred and born in ramshackle puppy mills. Never again. I have just chosen a pure-pred Yorkie puppy from a reputable breeder which I will pick-up when he's ready in a few weeks. read more

I have been getting my fish from here for almost a year now for my 3 year old son ,,, last week i went in and got 3 fish ONE had ICH I went in the next day and ask for then to change my fish not only did they give me a different fish then i bought in the frist place but yet another ONE with ICH ,,,,I had over $100 dollars of fish in my tank and NOW THERE ALL COVERED WITH ICH I was told they will do nothing , Iam very Upset and my son keeps askin why they wont help his fish , This is not how you keep people,coming back I should have went with everyone eles and went to BIG AL'S as i know they would have done something like replaced all the fish with ICH ON them , if anyone from Doogans would like to make this right my name is Will and my phone number is 705-715-5706 , TILL then i will let everyone I know about how they are and that customer service is not there as they dont care they will sell you a infected fish with out worries read more
