This is a really cute little donut shop. We got there around 9:00ish on a Sunday, and they were out of a lot. I recommend going early!! They did still have both chocolate and maple bars so we got some of those. They were really good. My dad got a glazed donut and really liked it. I would have probably given this a better rating, but they no longer have lemon filled. (Only Bavarian cream and jelly filled, did they ever have lemon?), and apparently 10:30AM on a Saturday is too late to get apple fritters or even just a plain glazed. I'm more of an old fashioned donut guy (which they had at least), so this isn't a total write off, but there's something off about the taste of their glazed twists. Only one person I saw on staff on a Saturday morning, but I really was expecting more considering competition in the neighborhood...ambiance is all right, nothing special. read more

We were on vacation in the area, and being morning birds, my son and I headed over early on a Saturday morning to get donuts for the sleeping half of the family. They open at 6, we got there at 7, and even though the streets were cold and deserted on a winter morning, this place was warm and cozy and doing steady business. This is really just a donut shop in a strip mall. But there was such sweet and friendly energy from the people behind the counter, it could convince you that this donut place is something more. The donuts are donuts--nothing fancy or trendy, but very fresh and just right. There are several carafes of coffee from which to choose, ranging from basic French roast to fair trade Ethiopian. I've been there on a few occasions where we arrived between 9AM and 10AM to find that they didn't have any donuts at all. Overall, there are definitely better donut shops in the area! Cute place. We were there Saturday morning for donuts and coffee. Fresh donuts and great texture. The apple fritter was on point, the old fashion chocolate had good texture but funky chocolate taste, and the cinnamon twist melted in my mouth (maybe too soft) but not too sweet. Simply THE BEST donuts in Santa Cruz County, and I'm a bit of a donut connoisseur. I'm an early morning regular- you really have to get there early or you'll lose out. Their donuts taste fresh, never stale. They offer all the standard types of donuts, and each type is exceptionally tasty and sweet with generous frosting. I also love their Santa Cruz Roasting Company coffee, especially the hazelnut. Their breakfast bagels are delicious too. This was by far the best donut I have ever had... no bells and whistles but a crisp outside, doughy/fresh middle and a perfectly balanced glazed (just sweet enough.) Free secure wifi! My 86 year old dad lives for his morning donut coffee paper ritual. I never go in search of them but indulge when I want to spend quality time with my dad (who is visiting me from Wisconsin). OMG this place rocks! We went to two other places in Santa Cruz before discovering this gem. One was out if donuts at 10am?! All their donuts and pastries are baked in house every night. Our all time donut to judge quality by is the French which is the lightest fluffiest donut of all time and not easy to master. The key is the inner moistness. Other places may make look alikes but taste like dry crisco inside and leave a film of grease on the roof of your mouth. The ones here don't need as much frosting as they have but the chocolate is rich and creamy and I eat it all with delight. My dad has an emotional support dog (13 lb Yorkie) and the staff is really cool about our taking him inside to sit under the table. The staff is very very friendly and knows many customers by their names! Impressive! I usually byo coffee to these types of places as they don't typically serve decent coffee (no espresso for sure) but this place offers about 8 different roasts and its refreshing to pay 2.50 vs 6 bucks for a cup of joe. Refills are $1! Its nice to not hear the roar of espresso machines too! Theres nothing 'pretty' or 'hip' here but its just nice down to earth people and very clean. I had been meaning to try this joint for a while and finally got a chance to after my hair cut, getting some stuff at the super market and arriving early to the plaza barber shop. Hole in the wall with little selection but they have all the classics. I went for the cake doughnut with sprinkle since the bf hearts sprinkles. Apple fritter was also on the menu. Both were thoroughly enjoyed. The cake doughnut was fresh and not at all heavy.. it was quite light which was surprising. Fritter... you and I have a date with destiny. Its made fresh here and you can taste how fresh and good it is ! The dough texture is perfect, Soft and chewy ! My only complaint is I got here at 830am and a lot of stuff were already gone. This is a locally very friendly early morning coffee and donut spot more or less on the main way into the capitola beach. They have their own private lot which while small will have parking available when you arrive. This is a medium to small spot and it's wayyyy better to come in the morning before the summer heat builds up. Many places in this area do not have air conditioning due to the seasonal chill, and this place is no exception. Come on a summer afternoon when the sun is up and beaming through the windows, and you'd better make this a to go order. The seating and decor are pure old school functional american donut shop. The walls and tables are pastel colors. The larger tables are up front and the two spot tables run down the back. Service is of the order,pay and get served at the counter model. This is a cash only joint, which is fairly typical of donut shops in the area. Perhaps in part because of that (keeping costs low) pricing here is very wallet friendly. Coffee and a donut can be had for about three dollars depending on choices made. The coffee is the fairly unremarkable drip/percolator style, but they do offer ten or so choices as to type, mostly from santa cruz coffee roasting (which has an excellent french roast, amongst other styles). The donuts are likewise your standard choices-plain, glazed, cake, old fashioned, fritters, cinnamon rolls,and croissants. They do a fair trade in breakfasty bagel/croissant stuff which considering the pricing are solid choices. As mentioned this is a local hangout especially in the early mornings. Not the stuffy standoffish kind of locals either. Be prepared to be greeted and spoken to by just about everybody inside. Also be prepared to share your table if you get one of the larger front window facing ones, assuming you leave a chair or two open. I LOVE donuts. I have my whole life, and when it came time to get married, my fiance (now husband) and I knew that we wouldn't be happy with a tiered wedding cake when FRIED, GLAZED, SPRINKLED cakes existed in this world. Of course planning a wedding from 3K miles away is hard... unfortunately, I didn't have the time or means to do cake tastings or scour the bay area for gourmet donut makers. Thank goodness I didn't! Based on the great reviews from Yelp, I blindly called the Donut Station and asked to order 13 dozen donuts, which they said would be no problem. The afternoon before my wedding, I walked into the Capitola location, ticked off all the flavors that I wanted (there are 26 flavors), paid with a credit card, and arranged for a friend to pick them up and drop them at our wedding site on the day of the wedding. They even invited us taste every single donut in the store (dream come true) just to make sure we were ordering the right ones. Even at 4pm on a Friday, they were fresh, crispy, sweet and perfectly crumby. The raised glazed is my favorite, and they were so light and airy! The old fashioned is hard to beat outside of California, and again, they were perfection - crispy, dense and rich inside, cinnamon & sugared evenly. The 26 flavors are so simple and fantastic, too - every combination of raised, chocolate raised, cake, chocolate cake, old fashioned, chocolate old fashioned, blueberry (cake & old fashioned) and the toppings. To say that it went over well at the reception would be an understatement. They were visually delicious, and lived up to every expectation. Guests were so excited, and the anticipation of choosing which flavor I wanted was probably the hardest thing I had to deal with all day! Plus there were just a few squirreled away for a late-night snack, thanks to my wedding coordinator ;) My one regret is that I didn't order more! (If you're thinking of serving donuts at an event or party, plan for 1.5-2 donuts per person... no one can eat just one.)
