Located on Hixson Pike in an an assuming building, you can easily drive by every day and not pay much attention to it. But if you keep doing that like I did for months, you're missing out on something wonderful. Pulled in on a whim, something that I tend to do fairly often, I wanted to check out Don's as there always seemed to be people in and out as I went by and it seemed worthy of a stop. A gentleman whom I assume is Don quickly greeted me from behind the counter as I came through the door. Excellent! We did the usual "what can I do for you, I'm just looking around" exchange but he didn't let me get away with that long as he started making suggestions. I told him this was my first visit so wanted to try something. I love ribeye and asked him to pick out his best for me, which he gladly did. As he wrapped it up I looked at the large selections of very good appearing meats, making mental notes of what I'll come back for. Grilled the steak that night with only salt and pepper. Fantastic 14 oz ribeye with perfect marbling and wonderful flavor. Best steak I've had in awhile. Enough said. Heading back soon. read more

My experiences here have all been uncomfortable. All three times, I walked into an empty store with 3 people standing motionless and silent behind the counter. No greeting upon entry. Nobody asked if I need help. They all stared at me while I browsed. They sell basic cuts of beef and pork, sausages with weird open ended casing, and some frozen seafood. Prices are relatively high. If you love sausage and spice try Don's smoked andouille links. They are sized like a "half smoke" wiener but straight cut at the ends like a slim jim. I buy pork products here, not any of the beef. Perhaps that is their bread and butter? Their pork products have been really bad since the last trip. The trips prior: amazing ribs and loins. I went twice in the last 2 weeks and the ribs had a strange/wild/yucky taste and texture to them. Completely different quality than before, about as bad as a a bad grocery store in terms of quality. Bought a huge 4 pound pork loin, froze it immediately after returning home (I live super close by too). Thawed the loin (still seal wrapped in its original bag of course) in the sink. Opened it up, the meat has a strange rotting odor. Grocery stores sell me better food than this, and are easy to work with regarding returns. I suppose I thought by going to stand-alone butcher I foolishly thought that there would be some kind of honor, trust, quality guarantee. Such a fool to think this place was somehow exceptional. Look, if I open a package of meat and it smells like shit I'm not buying anything from there ever again. Very frustrating. read more
