We have a big spacious room here packed with big ol' machines that have one purpose in life - to wash your clothes, and they do it really rather well. A big wash will cost you four quid (with ample room for duvets and sheets) whereas a tad smaller a wash will set you back a mere three pound. The drier is 20p for every three minutes and they have some seats in the middle. A good array of corner shops and food outlets nearby as well as some park benches if it's sunny - get your dirty rags down here asap!

In fact it's pretty grey and depressing, with a fair few boarded up shops and a constant stream of cars roaring through on their way home or into the centre of Bristol. Possibly because people want to counter the dullness of the place some amazing grafitti has popped up here, which the grandly named People's Republic of Stokes Croft have claimed responsibility for. Some of the murals are beautiful (which of course are liable to change or get wiped out by the council without any notice) and I think it's a brave attempt to bring a little colour to what is a drab part of Bristol. There isn't yet a walking tour, but I can imagine one popping up - Bristol's urban art has been attracting a lot of interest recently. It's easy enough to see the sites by one's self though - a wonder along Jamaica Street and the road Stokes Croft itself should mean you see a few interesting sites. Their website reveals them as a fairly serious bunch. They have maps, ambitions to be some sort of official community group, and a mission statement that says they want to promote Stokes Croft as a 'cultural quarter'. I hope they go from strength to strength and continue to brighten up Stokes Croft. That their chairman Chris Chalkley was arrested for painting a 'Welcome to Stokes Croft' sign shows they've got a way to go before everyone comes round to this view.

On the other hand, Stokes Croft is a gem. Full of artists and musicians, businesses like venues, cafes and arts centres are rapidly growing, what with Hamilton House, the Left Bank Centre, Metropolis and Cafe Kino all newly developing. When I miss Bristol, I miss places like Stokes Croft, but also can feel a little unsafe walking around there. It's definitely worth a visit. This is Bristol as much as Clifton is.

The place is fairly clean although could be better and there is only two small tables to fold clothes and one is under where the soap and fabric softener are dispensed so it was coated with laundry soap powder and the other is under the pay station (so in the way and the stuff on it gives the impression it's not meant to be used). The machines were easy to use and I really appreciated the contactless credit card payment option (without an extra fee). Just across the street is a cute little parklet with benches to enjoy some fresh air while you wait. There are also plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance. One of the frustrating things I encountered was that there was a laundry soap dispensing machine but it only accepts coins. So if you think you're going to be able to do your laundry without cash you better have your own soap. Also, the machine does not sell dryer sheets, only laundry soap and fabric softener. When I bought the laundry soap the box got stuck in the machine and I couldn't get it free with even my small hands. It would have also been nice if there was an unscented laundry soap option. Important to note that the last wash is at 20:00 (8 pm) even though it's open until 22:00 (10 pm). The sign says that the water supply cuts off. They do have WiFi and the code is posted on the wall. However, after I logged in it didn't actually work to connect to the internet for me. So overall, the best option I could find near the city centre of Bristol.

These guys hire out sound systems that could rock the city, let alone a club, or an isolated field in the middle of nowhere, (location to be revealed later).... This graffitied building on Stokes Croft is covered in art work of a more nocturnal nature, and carries posters for some of the fabled venues in Bristol. Inside you will find a plethora of flyers spilling off the counter. If you want to party, this is where you'll discover where you want to do it!

There is a large red sign at the front of the shop saying, rather misleadingly, PIANOS. Whilst they do sell pianos, that's really only scratching the surface. The first floor is mainly for classical instruments, whilst the basement houses the guitars, drum kits and amplifiers. There's a lovely corner full of classical guitars, where I can happily while away half an hour, given the chance. The staff are very friendly and never pressure you to buy. There are finance options available for some instruments, too - useful if you're lusting over that new Martin Acoustic, but haven't quite saved enough pennies yet!

I went into Pianos (which don't just sell pianos) to buy a recorder, which was only £10 and a guide book to get me started and refresh my memory for only £3.
