    Customized color wheel
    Nina R.

Several months ago, I got an online consultation with Donna. I'm mixed ethnicity (white, Asian, Latina) with olive skin, spreading melasma on my face, and was frustrated by online quizzes that weren't designed for such complexity. I didn't know this, but apparently she was the first person to do color analysis for all races, not just white people. So I found the right pro. Donna confirmed that I had both warm/cool undertones, and she asked a few questions to understand not only my skin/hair better but also my motivation for the consultation. She identified which colors would enhance my appearance, and steered me away from ones that wouldn't. She explained what my neutrals were, my metals, etc. We talked about make-up too. I had a bunch of questions, and she was generous with her tips. She made a customized color wheel and mailed it right away so I could have it on my trip. I definitely recommend her, and even better I bet if you can see her in person. Make sure the lighting accurately represents you if you do it online; I switched rooms at the beginning because I sensed it wasn't depicting accurately.

My Mom and I went to Donna for a color analysis and it was such a special, unique experience. We have different skin tones and hair colors, and Donna was able to match us with colors that best suited our different shades and tones. She taught us the basics of color theory and color matching, then showed us how one color could complement me but totally "wash out" my Mom. It was such a learning experience, and Donna is the sweetest teacher. We both left with a custom swatch book filled with our most flatting colors--and I use it all the time when I shop online. I can't recommend Donna enough!!!

My two friends and I had the BEST time having our color analysis party and consultation with Donna! We learned so much about color theory, she is a true educator and expert and such a lovely person. The fabric swatches you receive are so beautiful and helpful during shopping. Donna had snacks and drinks for us and her outdoor patio where we did the color analysis was fantastic. I really feel so much more confident to go shopping now that I know what colors to look for and which ones to avoid. I would recommend Donna to anyone wanting a fun afternoon and to learn about what colors look best on you!

Out in the morning sun on a trip to the Olympic Peninsula. Note the light pink shirt with grey bandana and black sweater.

Donna Fujii is the teal deal. I bumped into her on the Tiburon ferry and found out that with my hair going from auburn to silver I was right to switch to grey and black for pants and coats and to white, grey and light ice blue for shirts and sweaters. As it happened I had instinctively made this change from the tans and browns that worked so well with auburn hair. When I look at what to buy and what to wear I always think of Donna's advice. She's got a light touch with what she knows. Do see her and see how good you can look.

My own personal color wheel by Donna Fujii!

Worth every penny! Coming to Donna will save you time and money! The initial price tag can be hard to swallow for some, but it's definitely a wise investment. No more wasting money on unflattering clothing. Save time shopping or better yet, find more things that work FOR you.

Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute - Charlotte ‍…read more I have been a big fan of Aveda schools since my days in San Francisco. I used to go to the school on Kearny and Bush in the Financial District, and I absolutely loved it. So when I relocated to Charlotte, it was an easy transition to discover there was an Aveda school here as well--same trusted brand, same great products, and the same strong training philosophy, just organized a little differently. In San Francisco, students were grouped by skill level. The graduating students--called the "gammas"--were the rock stars of the school. They had the most confidence, the most experience, and could complete services efficiently. They worked on the main floor at street level, almost like a little jewel box where passersby could watch them practice their craft. It made the whole experience feel special. One thing I'll never forget from San Francisco was the shampoo experience. You would sit in the chair, it would gently tilt back, and your head would be perfectly cradled in the bowl. The hair wash was so relaxing and luxurious that I used to joke I'd install a shampoo bowl in my own bathroom someday. There's something very comforting about having your hair washed--it's simple, but it feels wonderful. Now, back to Charlotte. The setup here is different. All haircuts are priced the same--currently about $22--regardless of the student's level. There are add-ons available, but one thing to plan for is time. You should expect to be there for at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours, especially for hair services. What I truly appreciate is the level of supervision. Instructors are everywhere. They check the consultation, the cut, and the final result before you leave. Because of that structure, you're very unlikely to walk out with a bad haircut. In more than 20 years of visiting Aveda schools, I've only had two less-than-ideal experiences, which is a pretty strong track record. I've also had facials here, and they were excellent. The experience includes thoughtful touches like a relaxing foot wash, shoulder massage, steam, extractions, and a thorough skin analysis. It feels professional and surprisingly luxurious for the price. I remember paying around $45 for a longer facial, which is incredibly affordable compared to traditional spas. A few practical tips: * Parking is easy--there's a lot and a garage behind the building * Scheduling multiple services (like a haircut and facial) can be a little tricky, so patience helps * Bring cash for gratuities, although some students accept digital payment options Most importantly, remember that this is a teaching environment. These students are learning, building confidence, and preparing for careers in the industry. If you're expecting a fast, high-end salon experience with every bell and whistle, you may want to visit a traditional salon instead. But if you value affordability, professionalism, and supporting students as they grow, this is a wonderful option. I genuinely love this place. It has become one of my go-to spots in Charlotte, and finding little creature comforts like this has helped the city feel more like home. Treat yourself. Get the haircut. Book the facial. Enjoy the day. I recommend it.

In a weird area as well. I have no idea how any of the students get a job out of finishing this school, I have a solid feeling that the owner charges for this "school", and really the students pretty much get ripped off without any skills to get a career with after here. I came for a haircut and told the owner, another staff member, and the beauty school person doing my hair that I only wanted 1/4 inch trimmed. I looked down after about 15 minutes and it was more like 4 inches cut off! When I said something the owner asked like she did not know what I was talking about and said she was trying to do a silhouette look. What is that even? I had to walk out in the middle of my haircut. The student doing my hair did not even know how to properly wash hair either, she was and the whole school is a shit show.

So last year I was at the Face and Body show in San Jose and attended a Muse Beauty Pro class held by Alphonse Weibelt. His explanation of products, answering questions, and overall knowledge of Muse had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I was completely captivated and wanted to know more. I had the luxury of being able to speak with Alphonse personally, and he broke it down on all of the Kett Cosmetics. Since I had an airbrush from another company, he was able to recommend what I needed due to my challenges with my foundation cracking. I ended up buying the Kett Hydro Foundation Set and the Kett Hydro Shimmer Set. I LOVE this foundation. The bridal makeup that I have done over the past year has been phenomenal! Thank you Alphonse! Also something I need to point out -- I have been in the beauty business for over 25 years, and let me give you insight on our industry -- cosmetologists can be catty! We love to say what we think, and it's usually not very nice. (We talk major smack!) Most companies will put down another company in order to look good, and overall it just makes them look like they hate competition. The entire conversation I had with Alphonse was so pleasant, and not ONCE did he ever say a negative thing about the other company I was using, he even told me what I DIDN'T NEED since I already had it and would work well with Kett Cosmetics. I was so impressed with his professionalism and demeanor, and feel all of us in our industry should work with this standard.
