If you are every thinking about getting a dog or cat you must visit this place 1st. Rehoming is one of the most rewarding things you can do and the Edinburgh dog and cat home is always on hand to offer you help and guidance. We re-home our last dog from here and she was a wonder joy giver. She was fully grown had her own wonderful personality it was the best decision we could of made. At the time I was 9 and hell bent on getting a puppy but my parents said we should check out here 1st. I am now 21 and the dog past this year she was a wonderful companion and friend. Situated on the coast on Seafield Road East, this large animal shelter has lots of cats and dogs who desperately need to be adopted. While you're welcome to drop in, it's advised that you call in advance so the shelter can arrange for someone to show you about. This is especially the case for Saturdays when the place can get quite busy. I visited recently as I'm rehoming a cat, and it was great to be shown about by someone who knows the animals, their temperaments, their backgounds and their habits. Edinburgh Cat & Dog Home also has lots of cat and dog goodies for sale (think treats, bowels, litter trays and carriers) and given this charity provides care and shelter to many unwanted animals, it's well worth spending your money here. Remember though, a dog (or cat) is not just for christmas.

Every year many dogs find themselves without a home and those who are lucky enough to be taken to Glencaple then they will be treated with care and respect until they can be rehomed. There are many ways to help - even if you can't adopt a dog you can volunteer your time to walk the residents or help with fund raising events such as fun days or bake sales. If that doesn't take your fancy you can sponsor a dog, become a member or just donate to the cause. If you do give a dog a new home they offer continued support to ensure you and your dog have the best possible experience. A wonderful place doing wonderful work!

So everybody knows that before lilo I had Shug, a rescue dog from Dumfries and Galloway rescue…read morecentre. I walked him plenty of times a day, trained him for small periods of time a few times a day. He knew a few small simple commands, he was good with his recall, brilliant on his lead, but he was terrible in a car, he would sit and cry and all sorts. He would bark anytime there was a household appliance with a cable, or the cupboard under the stairs. He wasnt crate trained and hed go mental when we put him in it, so therefore he couldn't be left alone. So we built a spacious outdoor run for me to train him in, and to train him to handle being alone for small periods of time. So essentially the information his previous owner gave the centre was 80% bullshit. I'd had to ring the vets a few times as through night, hed stand up bolt upright, run to the corner of the room barking. So I'd sit on the floor away from him and try to comfort him from a distance, he eventually came round and went back to sleep barking and snarling in his sleep. Then all of a sudden one day he turned agressive. I was playing with him fine, he was licking me playing along, I answered my phone and when I hung up the phone. He tried to attack me, biting me, snarling his teeth, barking when I tried to stand up to get out the room to let him calm down, hed bite my ankles, shins and feet. So I'd collapse back to the floor. After this I found out it was just me hed bit! I eventually got out of the room and rang the rescue centre. They basically turned round and told me I was lying and that he was never like this in the centre. They eventually turned round and said they wanted me to return him as they wanted to do further training and assessments on him to try find out what was going on. So after hard conversations with everyone, we all agreed it's what would be best for everyone. We took him back, and the centre tried to find an excuse for everything that I was saying, saying he was playing with me. When I knew the difference between playing, and aggression. Well today we'd noticed hes back on the website for adoption. There is absolutely no mention of anything that I said, other than I couldn't commit to the further training he needed? I told the centre I wanted to continue training but they persisted for us to take him back. He was a brilliant dog but I think that the truth needed to be posted about him. And that this centre lie. I've heard numerous stories of this happenning.

It's located in a quiet area with ample space, staff there are super friendly and helpful and the dogs are all so cute! I had to suppress my urge to take them all home. Jeez, it was hard. Given this isn't a goods and service type place I don't have much more to say and I probably wouldn't reccomend a visit for the sake of it. BUT- if you're looking to adopt, volunteer some time or donate then I couldn't reccomend these guys highly enough!

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning…read moreto breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Alright, so I've lifted this from the Statue of Liberty, but I think this does do some justice to what SSCPA Shelters do. From abandoned/given up horses through to small pets, they unfortunately have collected them all from different parts of the Edinburgh area. It's heartbreaking yet warming to know the shelter is there. We came here to look at a new hamster, feeling like finding one a forever home would be a better alternative to buying one from a pet store and here we met Rita, the only hamster in the place, surrounded by a lot of rabbits. Shy, but adventurous Rita, found in a wardrobe and almost mistaken for a mouse. After a gentle interrogation over our suitability of taking her home, she was with us, and hid in the corner for a while. That was then, now she chews the bars to get our attention to take her out running around our house, freely or in her ball. She doesn't freak out every time there is a sudden noise, and she doesn't regard us as strangers, we're as tolerated as a hamster owner can be. Happy the SSPCA was there to look after her, happy she is in our lives now.

Dear friends and animal lovers,…read more I am writing to you with my heart in my hand to share a difficult situation. For reasons beyond my control, I have not received permission to have a dog in my home, which forces me to make the painful decision to give up my beloved companion, Smely, for adoption. Smely is an Anatolian Shepherd, just 8 months old, full of energy, nobility, and tenderness. He is a playful, intelligent, and protective dog who needs a home where he can grow up surrounded by love, space, and care. I am surrendering him with the hope that he will find a responsible and loving family who will give him the attention, patience, and love he deserves. It is not easy to part from him, but I know that the most important thing is to guarantee him a happy and full life. With gratitude, David Garcia josedavidchavez2001@gmail.com I'm writing to you with my heart in my hand to tell you about the situation of a living being I recently rescued. For years, he didn't receive the care and affection he deserved, and the family he was with decided to no longer care for him. Given this, I couldn't remain indifferent and took him into my home a week ago. During this time, I've seen that he is kind, calm, and has no behavioral problems. However, it's true that he has a difficult history; not because he himself caused harm, but because he lived in an environment where there was abandonment and neglect. His "crimes" are not his own, but rather the fault of the circumstances that surrounded him. Today, all I ask is a chance for him to rebuild his life in a safe, stable, and loving space. If you grant me permission to keep him with me, I promise to responsibly assume everything that his care entails: food, health, exercise, and, above all, affection. I'm convinced that every person deserves a second chance, and I trust yo

It was love at first sight and I had a fab four years with one and another 12.5 years with the other (sadly died in February 2022). The cats were perfect in every sense and Benton rehired them in a safe and professional manner. No complaints from me - or the mogs I adopted, both settled well and were beautiful friends. I've donated a small amount each month to the shelter since adopting the cats and will continue. When I'm over the recent loss, I'll certainly go to Benton to see if I can rescue another mature moggie. Well done Benton, you do a wonderful job giving unwanted animals a much needed second chance.
