Donizetti is a delicatessen which has evolved into a wine bar and bistro. The transformation has been swift and remarkable. And it deserves every bit of its success!
For several years Donizetti was a little corner shop selling traditional meats, cheeses, biscuits and wines. As its wine stocks grew, so did its clientele. A next door premises was colonised so that clients could eat a snack and drink a glass on the hoof. A few small tables were added for those who wished to linger longer.
Then they went for broke. Alongside the shop is a covered arcade supported by ancient columns, once used as an outdoor market. Donizetti was allowed to set out tables, chairs and a food counter. Suddenly, covers had increased tenfold. And do you know what? It is packed out day and night.
Massimo Locatelli's success story is founded on superb products at highly competitive prices. His range of 700 wines is remarkable for a small shop in a pedestrianised street. His bistro staff are young, energetic and helpful. They extended the opening hours for our party, when a couple of stragglers turned up late. Among faultless food, the cheeses stood out for their variety and flavour.
