We bought these food to eat at the zoo so didn't have time to check, but I don't know how a place sells refrigerated to go food for people who are trying to get a fresh bite for lunch. Dong Khanh continues to be my go-to Asian grocery store when in the New Orleans area. Although there are now big name chains like Hong Kong and 88 in the immediate area, Dong Khanh is still as strong as in the past. They have pretty much everything you want in an Asian (Vietnamese) grocery store. Their produce, meats, and seafood are fresh. They now have a big selection of Vietnamese desserts and pastries. These are usually made by outside suppliers and sold at Dong Khanh. They also have fresh baguettes from Dong Phuong or Hi-Do Bakery. The cashiers are also owners of Dong Khanh. They are always very nice and helpful in telling you where something is. Just ask them and they will send you to the appropriate aisles. read more

Local Asian grocery catering to the many folks on the West Bank. No, this place isn't pretty and yeah, the parking looks awful and when you coupled that with Asian lady drivers, be forewarned. Anyway, you can get your necessities and oddities here! Frozen foods like shumai and dumplings, fresh produce and veggies like watercress and Chinese broccoli, frozen seafood, and tons and tons of pantry items - like pocky, ramen noodle varieties, cookies, some housewares, and most importantly - ready to go food!!!! Come here and in the front next to the register is a shelf of goodies: sweet dessert cups (like yellow mung bean and coconut or green mung bean w/ seaweed - sounds gross but tastes awesome!), some bakery items, steamed pork and egg buns, steamed rice rolls w/ pork, and bun cha gio or Vietnamese eggroll with pork in rice noodle salad! The rice noodle w/ egg roll can easily feed two or one hungry mofo for less than $4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comes w/ the standard nuoc mam or fish sauce. Forks, spoons, and chopsticks available in front! They also sell drinks by the case and rice by the bags - what's great is that they will bring it out to your car for you! There was some stiff competition with the bigger Hong Kong market, but this store has been around for quite some time. The personal service and attention are the selling points, and you can haggle w/ them when you buy in bulk! Visa/Mastercard only w/ minimum purchase of $15 or $20. I could completely regurgitate everything Rice B said. It's a great little place that carries some things that Hong Kong market doesn't even carry. Some of their prices are even better than the much bigger Hong Kong. The one caveat I'd give is to watch the lady owner very carefully when she rings you up. She has slippery hands with the prices. At least twice that I've seen, I caught her ringing something up for 10 cents more than labeled. If could be accidental...but if so, she needs to be a lot more careful. read more

Dong Khanh, pronounced "down kine," according to my Vietnamese friend, but if you say "doong khan," as it looks, it's okay. The market is located down a bumpy driveway, nestled on the side of Kim's Restaurant, and in front of Four Columns, catering and reception venue. I am able to purchase all of the necessary Asian items I need, fresh and dried noodles, rice, fresh and dried fruits/ vegetables, sauces and spices, tea/coffee, canned/frozen foods, fresh pork/fish, Asian beer, dishes, pots and pans, and cleaning supplies. Several times I've found their prices lower than other Asian stores. Although the market is smaller than Hong Kong Market, I like this Asian store very much because the owners are FRIENDLY and HELPFUL, and speak English well. I do not feel intimidated to ask them questions which is a big PLUS when shopping in an ethnic store. read more

The cashier and two other men working there were super friendly. I bought a durian fruit because I wanted to try a new fruit that only this place sold. The lady at the counter showed me how to cut it and I bought some ginger. She told me how to make ginger tea by slicing the ginger and brewing it for twenty minutes. Best Asian produce section in the area! I am always in need of Thai Basil and Birds Eye Chili's... Sometimes these items are sold out at the Hong Kong market but without fail, they are available and Dong Khanh every time and for the same price or less! Small store but has a lot of variety. They cut their meat on the spot for you. I found that the food there isn't always fresh. Their pastry section is plentiful. The owners are very very friendly. If you shop there often, they will remember you by name and ask about your family. It's a very friendly environment to shop at. One of my favorite grocery stores in the metro area and a must-shop for folks who enjoy cooking Asian food at home. The price and quality of the vegetables easily beats most markets in New Orleans, plus they've got all my favorite snacks, sauces, noodles, kimchis, tofus, etc. Having lived on the west coast and traveled extensively through Asia, Dong Khanh is essential for my home shopping needs. Also, the one time I had to return an item, they were very apologetic and understanding, even though it was after the standard 7-day return window. A great little place! read more
