Oh my goodness! I was blown away by the quality of their food! Be sure to sit at the bar area and watch the chef do their work! First place i have ever had sushi- it was very good! Their popcorn lobster roll is very good, as well as many other rolls and the pot stickers. They give out complimentary rolls for larger groups which are always very tasty. The chefs will even make a special order if you have a certain roll that is not on the menu. The ladies that serve you are very nice- they always remember our drink order and are very friendly and prompt with refills. They are not over priced and have great lunch box specials. This is my all-time favorite Lompoc eatery! I am greeted like a rock star every time I walk through the doors! The food is fresh and delicious, but you now have to ask for wasabi due to lame ass individuals who waste! I'm a huge fan of the Aloha Roll, a spicy tuna roll inside with albacore and ponzu sauce topping it. The sashimi never fails to thrill. And if you want a hot roll try the Brother Roll, you have to ask for it - it isn't on the menu. Great for lunch, dinner or even in-between because they don't lock the doors after lunch like that other place. They also did a fantastic job catering my friends wedding. I use the word decent because I have been to many sushi establishments around the world, in Cali and this place stacks up to......ok. I've been here 3 times and it is hit or miss with the service. As Shun F. says, the "rolls are not bad", but I have had better. As we entered the restaurant, sushi chefs were quick to greet us with the traditional hello in japanese. I decided to give this place another try since we had last been here. This time, we got there in time for the lunch special. I almost ordered it because it was such a great deal. They have bento boxes with three choices of main dishes included, all for $10. Amazing. But since I still wanted Korean food in a town with no Korean options, I returned to this place since this is the only game in town for Korean dishes. I asked for iced tea, but since it was a Japanese restaurant, I asked if I could get iced green tea. The waitress didn't know, but she said that she would check. I got a fantastic iced green tea later. They do try to please, but the restaurant is very busy so be prepared to wait. The prices are good, so it is very crowded. I ordered the spicy barbequed pork. Last time it wasn't very spicy. This time, the spice level was much better. I ordered basically a bento box with salad, rice, tempura, a few sushi rolls and the daeji bulgogi. It would have been better bang for the buck to stick to the regular $10 bento box, but I left satisfied with my meal. I wonder if they can include kimchi with the meal, too? The rolls are pretty good, although my one complaint is that the California Roll seems to be the base of many of their rolls. I have been coming here for years with my family and friends. I like this place a lot although they don't change the menus it's been the same written ones for like 2 years. Well today me and my child went in we got in before the rush my kid ordered a lunch box special and me a Godzilla roll, she got her lunch box we shared while I was waiting on my roll. I was at the bar area there was tons of food waiting for runners mind you I work in the hospitality industry I know how it can get when is busy. I saw my roll about 15 mins pass I still haven't received it so I asked one of the waitresses to cancel it. She rolled her eyes and pointed at the food and said it's right there. I then was starting to get upset I asked her if it was even warm because it's a deep fried roll she replied not to warm but not cold!!!! Are you freaking kidding me? I said no Thanks I'd prefer it hot like it's supposed to (come it's a $14 roll.!) So she prints my bill and tossed it to me at the bar my 6 year old looked at me and said that was rude. Let me explain why my family and I will never return to Dong Hae again. Their disregard towards loyal customers is inexcusable. I encourage you to read this and tell your friends, as there are better options in town. We decided to spend the evening with our son and his girlfriend at Dong Hae because they had just purchased a coupon at http://www.restaurants.com/ for a $25.00 discount if we spent at least $50.00. We ordered to our heart's content believing we would save $25.00. We presented the coupon upon receiving our bill only to be informed they do not accept these coupons any longer (we use these coupons regularly without issue). Although we did not see a sign, she said they have one posted near the entrance to let customers know. We all expressed dissatisfaction with this situation, as we just purchased the coupon 3 weeks prior. The waitress stated, "we've had many upset customers over the past few weeks because of this same issue, but there is absolutely nothing we can do." I asked to speak to a manager, who apparently is also a sushi chef behind the bar, and waited nearly 15 minutes with no response. We approached the cashier asking why the manager never responded, she explained he is very busy and cannot just walk away from his duties. She attempted to cover for him and take our complaint which only resulted in her becoming defensive and insisting there was nothing they could do. The "manager" saw us talking to the cashier and still chose not to step in to address the complaint. Incidentally, the so-called sign is nothing more than a small unsuspecting hand-written note. THE BOTTOM LINE: The owners of Dong Hae have made some clear choices. They have chosen to collect at least $25.00 for every customer who walked in believing they were going to "save" that amount. They have chosen to take minimal action on an issue that can be easily avoided. They have chosen to allow their untrained waitresses to face numerous frustrated customers. They have chosen to advertise their specials at every table, but have also chosen not to warn their customers they might spend $25.00 more than intended, as aggressively. It seems clear Dong Hae is less concerned about providing 1st class customer service than they are about making a buck and/or keeping their customers. Dong Hae's lack of effort to recover from this situation is disappointing. When the waitresses told me there was nothing they could do, I believe what they really meant was there was nothing they are "willing" to do! A few simple, minimal cost steps such as a notice in each menu, or a table tent at every table would help eliminate much frustration. As I mentioned in the beginning, I will not return to Dong Hae, especially because there is an even better Sushi restaurant across the street named UMAMI YA SUSHI - I highly recommend them as they offer great food and 1st class customer service. read more

Upon entering this place of business, the staff was very nice and polite and sat us down right away (always). Sometimes, the chef will send over a free appetizer (happens twice for us) the sushi is AMAZING and the ginger is fresh. They have lunch specials that are definitely budget friendly. I don't recommend getting their Iced Tea (maybe I'm picky) it's to watered down for me, always is. I usually now just order a water for a drink. The teriyaki salmon was a little over cooked in my opinion. Overall, the food was good and the atmosphere was enjoyable. The manager/owner (I'm assuming) was very friendly and checked on our order because it seemed to be taking a while. He also gave us some 2 samples of sea bass and it was excellent. Disappointing. Ordered the sushi platter 10 pc, chefs choice. A co-worker recommended this place to me and like everything was just a little bit off. The miso was sweet instead of savory, weird to me. The lunch box was a pretty good deal but the sashimi made me uncomfortable. This was the first time I ever are sushi and contemplated food poisoning. I did NOT get sick however, but that was still a little unpleasant. I don't know what fish it was but some of the pieces tasted like I imagine aquarium water on a dirty fish bowl would taste like. The chef seemed to think something was wrong. I didnt finish everything and I didn't want to embarrass him so I asked for a to-go box and threw it away at work. Also some of the pieces were inexplicably seared. Never seen that before.
