If you're a fan of Italian food a visit to Tuscany will just open your eyes to amazing possibilities. While there are restaurants that abound this region it's always a pleasure of mine to find those hidden gems that only the locals know about. Case and point this humble establishment Farid Kebab in Prato. My friend Francesco mentioned how good this place was so we had to give it a try. Now I've had my fare shares of halal food here in the states and other places but this would be my first in Italy. This hole-in-the-wall, which in this case is truly in the literal sense since the store is the size of a closet, serves up some delicious Mediterranean food. The meat sizzles from the gyro machine and for a couple of euros you can have a choice of a combo platter or an all meat platter that has a generous portion of food. And by generous I truly mean a crap load! No complaints here. We ordered the combo platter and the meat platter. For less than 15 euros for both dishes the deal was a bargain. The meat platter consisted of a sizable helping of meat shaved from the turning machine of meaty-ness, with mayonnaise, ketchup, tzatziki sauce, and hot sauce in between the two layers. You read that right people they pile on the meat, add the amazing combo of sauces, and then add another layer of meat!!! They do the same thing with the combo platter but also add fresh vegetables, French fries, onions, etc. and then top with more meat then drizzled with the heavenly sauces. I keep drooling every time I think back on that fateful night. I think I need to contact those guys running the place and see if I can borrow their recipe. I bet you this place would make bank here in the states. So as I said in the beginning you can never have a bad meal in Italy. And based on this humble place ain't no one changing my viewpoint anytime soon.

Super nice staff greeted us when we walked in, and the interior looks small but inviting. We ended up ordering carryout (or, "takeaway," as they say here), and the food was a pleasant surprise. The Greek salad doesn't have lettuce, but the tomatoes, feta, capers, olives, onions, etc. are very fresh and delicious. The tsatsiki is creamy and tart, and is a a excellent complement to the Greek chicken souvlaki. And...the souvlaki is so flavorful and so fresh, that it was a unanimous hit. If you are in the mood for something other than pasta, give this place a try!

DINNER REVIEW…read more Discovered this small restaurant just by chance, walking in front of it and finding quite the line outside. The place is small, a few tables set along the walls, the counter with fresh fishes exposed. Service is very nice and also quite the Osteria type, very jovial and playful. On the blackboard the menu of the day, but we weren't fast enough to savor it and we ended up with a big platter of grilled shellfish. The fish was nice and desserts later were quite the heavy ones, but very very tasty. Spent 28 Euros each and we didn't have any alchool. They did offer us 1 out of 2 desserts, but I still think fish is way too pricy for the simplicity of the food we had.

Our bread was made fresh and we let the owner decide as to what toppings we should add to our sandwich. I got mine spicy (turned out to be the perfect amount of spice), with the beef, lettuce/tomatoes, yogurt, baba ganoush, zucchini, eggplant, crispy onions and the spicy red sauce. It all melded together perfectly! Not to mention, the price is great -only 5 euros for a sandwich + drink (esp. considering the sandwich is so huge that 2 people could probably share one). Good place to check out when you're taking a break from all the Italian restaurants nearby.

A Southern feast amidst the back streets of central Firenze…read more After slogging past Florentine steak shop after steak shop, we encountered Il Gourmettino by happenstance. It's a lusciously-appointed restaurant with a painted tile foyer and elegant dining area. We chose to dine in the back courtyard, where several tables cluster around a citrus tree. We ordered several different plates for lunch, including their seafood (being a Southern Italian spot I'd be remiss to ignore the pulpo) and some pasta. The octopus was decadent and perfectly grilled. Honestly, the best octopus I've had in Italy so far (and in Florence, no less!). I also sampled the beef tartare, which was a great play of textures and complemented by a bed of wild rice. The pasta was fresh and had excellent bite - a glorious comfort meal after a long day of trekking. You know when you crave a meal months after eating it that it was a rare find. I can't commend this place highly enough; had we not found it on our last day in the city we definitely would have been back. Since then, we've directed friends here and they have reported nothing but good things. Cheers, Gourmettino.
