Good spot overall but a little room for improvement. I stopped by here with a few friends on the way back from Lake Lure. It was a good almost halfway point to break up the 2 hr drive. One of my friends had been before and recommended it so nobody else objected. It's right off the freeway and for arriving at 6pm on a Sunday and seeing a nearly full lot, I had high hopes. We were seated immediately at a spot facing a tv (which we requested) so we could watch a march madness game. It's an authentically decorated place with a menu to match. Our server asked for our drink orders, we all stuck with water, but it did take a bit for that to come out, which I suppose was a preview for the rest of the evening. We also got the guacamole and cheese dip; The cheese was warm and tasty but could have been a little thicker. The guacamole needed some salt/pepper. For our entrees, we ordered an assortment of plates - meat bowls, enchiladas, and I got the monterrey quesadilla (shrimp, mushroom, rice, and beans). The entrees took a good amount of time to come out- over 20mins- and when I asked the server for a group picture, he very brusquely dismissed me and never came back. Other than that hiccup, the food was indeed tasty, and the portions were huge. I could have had leftovers but ate more than I should have in one sitting and sacrificed the rest. Once we finished, we waited another 15-20 mins for our server to even return and give us the bill. Family owned restaurant. They have hearty portions and it's always festive. Sometimes they come out and sing happy birthday in Spanish and everyone in the restaurant claps at the end of singing and a cake is brought out. Not sure who provided the cake. I think maybe the family. They have a hometown bar, apart from the two large dining rooms with tables and booths. The food is delicious and I love a frozen margarita!! They have different size glasses for Margaritas. They have been in the business over ten years but not sure how long. Because the service is excellent! It took over 30 minutes to get our food and when we asked for a manager to check to see where our food was he told us all the employees were in their break in the kitchen which is why there was a delay. Our food arrived finally and was cold and when my mom asked why her fajitas were not sizzling and were looking warm we were told they were just pulled off stove . I ordered chimichangas which was cold and drowning in watery sour cream and when I took 1 bite I asked them to take the food back as it was horrible We asked the manager for the owners name as he was unhelpful, argumentative, and continued to make excuses for horrible service and food but he refused Never in a million years would I recommend eating here . I would rate less than 1 star of if I could and only hope the owner of this restaurant sees this post read more

Good food and good service. Chips are thick, queso is very thick and the salsa is spicy. I ordered the big chimichanga with pico on it because it's too bland without it for me personally. We stopped by for lunch on black friday. The place was hopping and they seemed short staffed but they were stepping up best they could. My husband and I both had fajitas which were abundant and flavorful. Our waiter was a little scarce towards the end of the meal but we really weren't in a hurry. This was one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences I've had. I stopped in intending to order lunch and was served chips and salsa while I thought about what I wanted, which has always been standard here. Shortly after, I was given a ticket charging me for the chips and salsa. Since this had never happened to me before, I politely asked for clarification. Instead of receiving a simple explanation, the employee became rude and confrontational. He told me that was my ticket and I had to pay or he would take the items and get me to leave, then began removing things from my table. At no point was I refusing to pay, I was trying to understand the policy before ordering my meal. Another man up front later explained that some customers come in just for chips and leave, but that does not excuse the way the situation was handled. Consistency and communication matter, but professionalism matters more. Unfortunately, this experience fell short on both. I will not be returning. read more

Taqueria Fuentes right next door is so much better, faster and felt so authentic with a mariachi band playing. Anywho so my wife and I showed up at around 2:30 with us being the only person in our area our waiter who was clearly running the bar or had a buddy but he kept dissapearing there to talk to a guy for about 10 minutes at a time and was training some tall fella super nice guy but our waiter was frustrated with him. So we had 5 other people come in eat and leave before we ever gotten our food. And the only thing we received was our chips and dip..Our waiter was rude left our waters in the far corner of our table having to make us damn near reach out all the way to the far side to get them..but I decided to leave after the large group of people came in and all received their appetizers and food he'll even the one that I ordered. But when I said just give us the check for the chips and dip to which they asked well do you want your food to go? So you had our food this whole time and never brought it out. This place is Spot on for Service! They are on top of refills you never have to ask! My husband loves the beef Chimachangas and I like trying different things, J have had the chicken before and they put lots of chicken! I had the fajita salad the last visit which was very good. We have been to other Mexican places in the area this has to be our favorite by far. Everything always tastes fresh. Prices are reasonable too. I also tried the flan one night it is very good here. Overall we will keep going back, you never have to wait long for your food and there is never a wait which is nice. They are always willing to fix any issues with your order if incorrect. Their pricing can be confusing on bar drinks and seems to be different every time we get a drink. This restaurant has lost its charm. Even though the food was good and the restaurant was clean, the prices are ridiculous with yet another increase. They don't have a condiment bar and they charge extra for every little item. We won't return to the Shelby location anymore. The interior is nice, the seating is always in a nice spot and the service is some of the best. I went here a few weeks ago for the first time it was very good and the chicken enchiladas with refried beans rice it was delicious tonight I went there my wife got steak fajitas which was good I had ordered the steak nachos which consisted of nachos steak and queso nothing else no lettuce no tomato no onion no jalapeño no sour cream no guacamole no nothing and it was $11 the only thing I ate was the steak because the nachos were drowned and queso so I would not recommend getting nachos but the other food was pretty good so far read more
