We looked at apartments in West Culver and came across a Don Klein property. It was a good value and perfect location for us. The qualification process was quick and seamless; we took possession a few weeks after. We requested a few things up front (new bathroom grout, upgraded countertop cutting board) and Don was agreeable to everything. Our apartment was in great condition and whenever anything needed work, his team was quick to respond. We also especially loved the location with walkable grocery, restaurants and coffee shops. Our base changed so we're no longer in LA but if we do get back, we'll look up Don and hope he's got something available. Highly recommend renting from this group. read more

Hi Yelpers, I just want to share an update pertaining to Don Klein's erroneous response to my original review, however late it may be. 1. A simple Google search coupled with obvious bank statements/application details can corroborate that I was an NYC real estate salesperson before moving to L.A. so that is indisputable. It is not atypical by any means for landlords to accommodate virtual viewings, which is understandable given the pandemic's circumstances and this has become even more common now. I did not "beg" for anything. In retrospect, I should have stayed in my luxury Manhattan apartment and not have moved to this place in Van Nuys at all. I just wanted a change of scenery due to the pandemic. I easily moved to a house in the suburbs immediately after Zombar Ave and there were no concerns about my occupation, ability to pay, or academic status whatsoever. 2. The furniture comments neglect the fact that I paid for those furnishings in addition to the rent, and they were all pre-owned. So, I was charged extra for used, outdated furniture because I was moving from the East Coast to the West Coast. I certainly wouldn't have ever needed to "sleep on the floor" as I was never desperate; I could have quickly gotten a hotel or home rental. 3. If I was unclear on California's specific rental policies, that's on me. But to suggest that I was not a real estate professional is absurd. Obviously, I had documentation and experience prior to moving into the townhome that an effortless Google search would prove; and of course, the real estate industry in NYC compared to L.A. is different and perhaps I should have done more research. 4. Given COVID-19 and other health concerns, I was uncomfortable with random people walking through the townhome at all hours while I was still a tenant who was both working and going to school simultaneously, which I explained in detail to Don Klein and associate Cody Weiss. Inflexibility in a time of crisis is a red flag. 5. Regarding my claims that Don Klein management stopped responding, it should not take more than two weeks to respond to simple inquiries about a security deposit. It was not a holiday or anything. 6. Don Klein fails to mention that, for example, the washing machine was already broken and not able to complete cycles without leaks and flooding. 7. As mentioned previously, inflexibility during a pandemic or otherwise challenging time should be a red flag for all potential tenants of Don Klein. 8. Pertaining to the small claims court filing, that is also indisputable. I certainly filed a small claims court case in the respective county, but ultimately decided to withdraw it because I didn't think that a few hundred dollars and the accumulated stress were worth it. That was my decision as the tenant, not Don Klein's. I hope this gives everyone a clearer and more accurate account of my negative experience. I've lived in many properties across the U.S. with virtually all being more high-end than # 17 that Don Klein rented to me on Zombar Ave in Van Nuys, CA, and I've never had a situation even close to this. read more

I rented from Don and Cody for two years. The application process was smooth when I applied in 2019 and everything went through quickly. Throughout the two years living there Cody was always quick to respond to any issues we had. He sent out a repairman ASAP when we had an issue with our washing machine. Another time we had some dampness issues on the wall that we reported as soon as we noticed and they quickly sent someone to investigate, ended up re-roofing our unit and replacing a whole wall. They just generally responded quickly and professionally. When it came time to move out they were also great. We were moving cross country and we were crunched on time. I reached out to Cody for the name of a cleaner and he said that since they were going to paint anyways he would be happy to schedule the cleaners for us after the painters came. We discussed a fair price and agreed to have it taken out of the security deposit. But he just reached out to let us know they were giving us the full deposit back. The deposit was sent out to us about 9 days after our lease ended. I had a wonderful experience with Don and Cody. If I ever move back to the area they will be my first stop for a new place. read more

My husband and I rented an apartment from Don Klein located in Santa Monica for 4.5 years. We were honestly so thankful for this opportunity and experience. We have had the privilege of renting from Don for the past two years. We have loved the house and enjoyed working with Don & Cody. They are kind, considerate and incredibly responsive! Any time there was a question or any type of service or repair needed they always handled it quickly and professionally. They are in constant communication and follow-up as promised. I was never left feeling like our needs were not met. We decided to move to be closer to our kids schools and friends - but wouldn't be leaving otherwise. We rented a one-bedroom from Don Klein in Santa Monica, which was beautiful and modern, for 3+ years. We only moved because we wanted more space. Super easy experience with Don, and Cody the property manager. Always available when needed. And continued to be helpful even after the move-out! I lived in one of Don's properties on La Brea for over two years. Don and Cody make a great team. Don owns the properties and Cody manages them. Any time I had any issue whatsoever at the house, I called or emailed Cody and he would get back to me promptly - usually within 24 hours, never over 48. Cody would not only respond quickly, but also take action, ensuring whatever issue we had was resolved as soon as possible. I lived with 3 other people in this house, for a long time, and between the four of us I sometimes felt bad for how many times we had to call Cody and ask for help. But he always helped in a professional manner, and with a smile on his face. Don and Cody are not only a great team but great guys as well. I wanted to take the time to thank Cody Weiss and Don Klein for a fantastic experience with their overall service and product in property management. The only reason we vacated one of their properties (Hollywood) was because I needed to relocate down to OC for work, (unfortunately they didn't have anything available at the time in OC, otherwise I would have jumped on it). The 2 most important things to me was living in a property I would be proud to live in and communication with property management. With Cody, (Don's right hand man), I couldn't have asked for better communication and responsiveness whether that be getting in touch with him via text, call, and/or email (one time even way after "office hours"). There was also a case we needed them when Cody was on vacation, and Don (Owner) stepped in and took care of it on his own right away. They always gave a "heads up" if they needed to come to the property for any reason and let us be. Although we didn't need much fixing, the few times we did, they were on it within a day, oftentimes same day. Move in/Move out, (even a time when we had to remove/add a roommate during the initial lease term) and return of deposit was a seamless process, extremely fair, and done in a timely manner. Pay your rent on time, treat the property like your own, and these guys are cool guys that will stay out of your business and provide excellent customer service when you need them. Don Klein Management may be one of the worst experiences I've had trying to rent a place, if not the worst. My roommates and I exchanged phone calls and emails with Mr. Klein's office manager, Cody, for over two weeks. However, Cody was always slow to respond to any of our questions, and even after we had seen the place and turned in an early application he did not process it until specifically told to do so. And after several days of waiting and paying for credit checks, we were told that not only did we not get the place, but as people moving to LA from out of state we were never being seriously considered in the first place. I am sure Don Klein and his team are perfectly nice people, but unless you meet whatever hidden criteria they are looking for, no matter how professional you are or how quickly you get your paperwork in you will be out large amounts of time and money trying to rent from them. read more
