This was a pretty awesome recommendation from one of our friends for cocktail bars in Palermo. I'm…read moresort of a sucker for speakeasies, and this was one of the more involved ones I've been to yet. On a very unassuming street, you have to declare the password to the doorman, and then once you do, you walk to a telephone booth that the doorman will give you an access code for. Certainly a lot of steps, but pretty well executed, actually. After entering, you see a very dark, intimate area with some nice couches for lounging, while the back area is brighter-lit and has the full bar, and a second level with more seating. It's certainly much more touristy here, as most of the clientele doesn't seem like they're from around the area, but it doesn't really take away from the vibe at all. Nonetheless, it's definitely very scene-y. The DJ up on the second floor was spinning some 90/00's rock (Chili Peppers, Blur, Killers) before moving onto more modern American pop songs from artists such as The Weeknd and DJ Snake. After going to other bars in the area that played mostly pop hits in Spanish, I could see that this was more of an outlier, but I didn't mind. We managed to snag some seats at the bar after befriending a very friendly couple that was just about to leave. We ordered a bunch of different drinks: smoked rosemary old-fashioned, pisco sours, the power of the tonic (basically a gin and tonic with honey and extra lemon). The bartenders certainly know what they're doing, and you can witness them practicing their craft. My smoked rosemary old-fashioned was a bit on the sweeter side, but still very strong, and the bartender actually used a blowtorch to light the rosemary, which was pretty gimmicky, but still kinda cool. The pisco sours was pretty delicious, and the power of the tonic came in a huge glass, and was very strong. The prices here are definitely more expensive than most bars in the area, with cocktails running from AR$150-200 (USD $11-15). However, they're using very quality ingredients, and the service is excellent and very attentive, so in all, a very quality product. Definitely worth a visit if you're going out in Palermo. It's certainly a very intimate space, while also providing a plethora of delicious, well-crafted drinks.

Taking over the spot that was El Tejano originally, if I understand things correctly, Ronald, who…read moreruns this place, was the chef for Larry, who owns El Tejano (now, as far as I know, only to be found at El Alamo's two bars... the original on Uruguay and a new one on Córdoba). He either bought the place out, or just took over the lease when El Tejano left. He's given it a slight Dutch twist, when it comes to some of his sauces and spicing, and adding in menu items like bitterballen. With three of us at the counter on Sunday afternoon (normally he only opens at night Tuesday-Saturday, but occasionally he's in the mood to open Sunday lunch, and posts it on his Instagram account), and a sampler platter for two on offer, we asked if he could up the sampler to a tabla for three, and he was happy to oblige. This is a whopping sampler of meat - especially for the easy price of 400 pesos/person, a mere $7.25. For that, each person gets a fried empanada filled with his smoked pulled pork held together with Indonesian spicy peanut sauce - yum! - a smoked chorizo - more yum! - smoked and barbecued bondiola, pork shoulder - oh come on now, how many times can I say yum! - and two smoked ribs smothered in your choice of spicy or not "Lekker sauce", which is a slightly fruity, spicy blend that's delicious, though we found the ribs themselves a bit dry. The two smoked meats in the middle are livened up even more by your choice of his own housemade spicy mustard (we all want bottles of the stuff), or his Mortal hot sauce, which is a jalapeño sauce with a kick and flavor similar to Sriracha. Although not on the day's menu, he brought us out a couple of extras to sample - some smoked lomito, pork loin, that he's experimenting with. We liked it a lot - he asked what we thought it might go with - my thought was a sandwich with smoked cheese and kimchi (he's a friend of, and proponent of, Kimchi Buenos Aires, who I buy kimchi from when I don't make it myself. (Delivered to your door usually next day, and very reasonable, with a choice of styles!) He also brought us some plain and spicy curry bitterballen - a new one for all of us - a sort of squishy meatball (basically ground meat mixed with bechamel and spices and then breaded and fried) - both, well, more yum! Overall assessment? Some of the best smoked meat in Buenos Aires right now. (Before someone asks, simpers, or protests - let's see, I'd go to Lekker for the empanada, chorizo, and/or bondiola, and to El Tejano for the brisket, ribs, and chicken. I haven't encountered anywhere else in town that tops either of them in the smoked meat world.)

In a country known for its steaks, Don Julio ranks supreme. While pricier other nearby spots, the…read morequality of the meal and the level of service are unparalleled. I first tried Don Julio 2 and 1/2 years ago, on the way to Argentina. I remember being blown away by the steaks and even more so by their famous homemade ice cream. It uses Jersey milk, which I understand makes it fattier and more delicious. All I know is, upon my first return to Buenos Aires, I immediately sought out this restaurant and tried to get a walk in. No such luck, so I made a reservation for the following week. Reservations can be made online in English or Spanish. For such a popular place, you can still get reservations a week out. Reservations are for the outside, which include blankets at each seat and heat lamps. They can and often do reach out to you via WhatsApp before your reservation to see if you would like an inside table instead, at different times. Show up on time, and they offer you a complimentary class of moet chandon champagne and mini empanadas while you wait for your table to be ready. The kitchen will send you breads and a variety of little things to taste. We had amazing asparagus, cured meats, and a flaky pastry, in addition to a delightful bread. There was enough for us to say that we would already be content with just that, but of course the meat was coming! We opted for the entrecot, which is like a bone-in ribeye, "a Punto" or a very juicy medium rare. Eat it with the spicier chimichurri sauce and woooooowweee let it melt in your mouth! 1 entrecot was enough for 2-2.5 people. We got 2 for 4 and had some leftovers. We also got the arugula and shaved cheddar salad, which was divine in its simplicity. Grilled mushrooms were also a perfect pairing with the meat. For wine, we had the sommelier choose us a dry Merlot, which was jammy and delightful . For dessert, we had the the dulce de leche (sweet but amazing), vanilla, and egg yolk vanilla ice creams. Everyone said they were the perfect ending to a perfect meal. As we sauntered back to our hotel in the afternoon sunshine, I kept repeating in my head " soy contenta" because boy was I ever. This meal did not disappoint again, and I will be back whenever I can. Worth the hype and worth the wait!!! p.s. that meal cost us each about $100 USD.

Don Julio Parrilla - The Meal That Changed My Mind About Buenos Aires…read moreAfter spending a week in Buenos Aires, my hotel concierge had secured reservations at five of the city's hottest restaurants & trendy spots, Michelin-recognized destinations, and some of Argentina's highest-rated dining experiences. Unfortunately, the first two nights were disappointing. I started wondering if the legendary reputation of Argentine beef was simply an illusion. Perhaps the quality of the meat was exceptional, but the execution wasn't. Then came Don Julio. Our reservation was for 9:30 p.m. at one of the hardest restaurants in the city to book, and within minutes of arriving, every negative thought I'd had about dining in Buenos Aires disappeared. Guests waiting outside were welcomed with complimentary Prosecco and warm empanadas while tables were prepared. We stepped aside to take a few photos and struck up a conversation with a friendly couple from New Jersey. Like us, they admitted they hadn't been blown away by the city's food scene, until Don Julio. We were seated at a cozy table with a clear view of the chefs expertly preparing and carving beautiful cuts of beef. The atmosphere reminded me of Pastis in New York... classic, lively, elegant, yet relaxed, like a charming Parisian bistro. The Wine & Starters We began with a bottle of Balbo red wine, smooth and velvety without heavy tannins. Fresh bread arrived with rock salt, spicy olive tapenade, and a bright pico de gallo that was unforgettable. The menu was refreshingly simple: exceptional ingredients, no unnecessary theatrics. Endive & Shaved Walnut Salad - 30/10 I never expected an endive salad to be memorable, but this one was extraordinary. The leaves were buttery and tender, perfectly dressed, with shaved walnuts adding texture and balance. Midway through the meal, my boyfriend said, "Now this is a dish you can't replicate." I replied, "Challenge accepted." Creamy Mashed Potatoes with Jersey Butter - 10/10 As a self-proclaimed mashed potato connoisseur, I can honestly say these were among the best I've ever tasted silky, buttery, rich, and luxurious without feeling heavy. Grilled Cauliflower - 4/10 Well prepared, lightly charred, and served over a smooth purée, but after the incredible salad, it simply couldn't compete. The Star: Bone-In Ribeye for Two - 100/10 After several disappointing steaks earlier in our trip, we learned that ordering medium-rare in Argentina often resulted in something closer to medium-well. This time, my boyfriend ordered the steak rare with a charred crust, and our waiter understood perfectly. What arrived was one of the greatest steaks I've ever eaten: tender, juicy, perfectly pink, and incredibly flavorful. I've dined at some of the world's most celebrated steakhouses, and this ribeye belongs in that conversation. Halfway through dinner, I leaned over and whispered, "Has our entire trip to Argentina just changed because of this restaurant?" Three of our four dishes were phenomenal. This wasn't just the best meal of our trip--it may have been one of the best meals I've ever had. Dessert - 9/10 Skipping dessert was never an option. We ordered crêpes with dulce de leche, finished with a crisp brûléed top and served with rich Jersey milk ice cream. Our waiter also surprised us with a complimentary serving of dulce de leche cream, one of my favorite bites of the evening. Service - The service at Don Julio deserves a standing ovation. Our waiter was warm, knowledgeable, attentive, and incredibly professional. When I dropped my fork, another appeared instantly. Every time someone left the table, a fresh napkin awaited their return. Wine glasses never sat empty, and the maître d' checked in without ever interrupting the flow of the evening. Every detail was noticed. Nothing was overlooked. It's the kind of hospitality that makes you feel genuinely cared for rather than simply served. Final Thoughts Don Julio completely changed my opinion of Buenos Aires' dining scene. After several disappointing meals, this restaurant reminded me why Argentina has earned its world-famous culinary reputation. Outstanding food. Impeccable service. A warm, energetic atmosphere. An unforgettable experience from beginning to end. If you're planning a trip to Buenos Aires, make your reservation at Don Julio as early as possible. Trust me...it's worth every bit of the hype
